Bushcraft Camp - Solo Overnight in the Super Shelter, Axe, Campfire, Lean to Shelter

I head to the Bushcraft Camp for a solo overnight in the super shelter. After months of shelter building and camp updates, it has been nice to finally spend a night alone in the forest. I slept on the raised bed in the Giant Lean-to shelter, which I use as the primary shelter for the camp now. The secondary moss shelter will still get use in the future. The Hunting Tower and ladder are both still standing strong, and the new fire pit with air tunnel is working so well! I cook up some food on the grill, test out my new hand-forged axe, as well as attempt another primitive bow drill this time with soft wood. The woods were so peaceful at this time of year, and I am looking forward to bringing my Dog Jaxx along with me to the camp. With the tarp roof now raised, it has allowed much better air flow and the smoke flows right out of the camp. Since extending the perimeter walls of the camp there is much more room inside. Doing a solo overnight at the Bushcraft Camp helped me to spend more time developing some Bushcraft and Survival skills in the wilderness. Thanks for joining me on the adventure! - Mike

TA Outdoors Mike thanks for recommending "The Name of the Wind", in a previous episode. I had given up on modern fantasy years ago. Growing ever tired of the excess violence, and influence of Martin in current works. Rothfuss has crafted one of the best fantasy books of all time. I couldn't put it down. Thanks again. I'm off to find book 2.

Love your channel, I've been interested in off the grid living/ camping and survivalist training for about 10 years now and I've taught myself allot of things by watching KZbin videos like this as well as going into the woods and trying it out myself. Thanks for your entertaining videos with your dad! I just lost my mom last month and she was really into all this stuff too. It makes me feel line she's still watching with me when I see you having fun with your dad! God bless you both be safe and keep up the good work!

Excellent video.. Always watch all the way through to the end. Nice to hear stories about you and your dad. My first night in my little cabin, there was bumping all around the walls of the cabin, I looked up at the East window and a shadowy figure rose up and began peeping in the window.. rotten horses! So I got up to shoo him away.. another horse had his nose buried in the fabric bag I had left on the porch.. and the third horse had gotten into the back of the truck and had the furniture strapping out and flinging it around. So I grabbed the push broom and chased them all away during the Snow Moon! Thanks for sharing your adventures!

You have a badger sett nearby...and they do dig for food: worms, grubs, small burrowing rodents. Badgers' Rest has never looked better than it does from the angle of your wood store and gate! Wish we could purchase apple-pork sausage like that in the USA! I suppose I could just make some...as I do make other sausages. The ax handle uses a Japanese charring technique to harden and to preserve wood against moisture, as well as making your particular ax look wonderful. Check out Shawn James and his treatment of wood sheathing for his cabin videos.) Finally, the bow drill fire: my least likely source of fire! Perhaps you could have roughed up the birch bark base layer. I noticed earlier in the video that the birch bark you harvested was light on oil.

With respect to the previous comment about putting oil on your self made mallet. To protect the wood, brush on a couple of layers of boiled linseed oil. It can be bought already boiled and ready to apply. That's probably what the other viewer was referring to.

Thanks, Mike, for sharing your gear with us. Many, who want to learn bushcraft techniques, appreciate the heads-up on what works from an experienced bushcrafter, like yourself. My take-away from this video was the importance of a good, small axe....oops,.hachet. It is an impressive tool you've added to your kit. The fact you made it with Alec makes it so special......just like you mentioned. The 'burned' handle is nothing less than AWESOME!!! I make walking sticks from time to time. I use old used motor oil. Pour oil on a rag and wipe it on the stick. Then draw the stick thru the open flame of your camp fire. The heat causes the oil to soak into the wood and makes it much more water resistant.

Second comment, my apologies, but I forgot to suggest as far as your headlamp batteries issue, what I found so handy is to get a battery holder or case that normally gets stashed inside your kit somewhere, and attach a bit of webbing strap, or a clip of some type to the back and mount it to your headlight strap. You can usually carry two sets of batteries for a light and it keeps them close at hand should one set die, or you remove batteries from your headlamp when not using them. Nice thing is many headlamps have a separate battery compartment so it doesn't look unusual.

I'm sure someone has beat me to it but just in case. I believe you were refering to "boiled linseed oil" to protect your bowling pin. You don't boil it, its just called "boiled linseed oil" They say when you get a new axe handle (untreated) you rub it on, wait, then rub it off. You do that every day for a week, once a week for a month, then once a month for a year, then once per year. Honestly, I'd just do the bowling pin one or two times. unless you're trying to save it for your grandchildren. Love your videos!

Thats one bad ass camp axe bro. Love your vids and your shelter building skills are top notch. Make more vids of building shelters. And my most favorite bushcraft vids are late night camp life and cooking vids. Make more of those. But you rock bro. Very skilled woodsman you are.

For the areas dug up around the tree, kind of looks like a feral hog. Love seeing the hatchet in use. I found Alec Steele when you first made the knife and he has been great entertainment ever since. Keep up the good work!

I got a little tip that I learned through using my axe. If you have a piece of wood with a knot in it try to split it streight down the middle of the knot and usually you will find that a knot splits very easily if it's hit exactly in the middle.

Mike- Those beer 'covers' are insulation. If you leave them on while drinking, the beer warms more slowly. :)
