Last year I spent six days out in the wild living in a teepee that I made myself. I brought a book that helped me identify wild edibles and my fishing pole ,a knife , a field cup and a canteen and some matches. The first day I harvested greens , wild onion and cat tail roots and caught two good sized catfish that I skinned out and baked on a flat rock next to the fire. I made a thin soup out of the veggies using water from the river which I boiled in my field cup. The worse part of my experience was when it got dark my anxiety level kicked up because I was thinking about Jason from Friday the 13 th but as time went on I got used to the night and ended up spending two more days in the North Ga woods. It was a great experience.

I lived 100% off grid in a cabin in the Nez Perce forest (Idaho) for a year. Got there in april, before the snow melts (June). The first few months we only had an antique, 2 person "hand" saw and and ax. That's how we had to cut down winter wood. Eventually we got a small gas saw, thankfully! Winter was 20ft of snow, and 40°f below freezing that year. Our cabin was near a small river (more like a creek in some places) called the American River. Every morning wed have to chop thru about 6inches of ice to get to the water. We'd fill up a 5gallon bucket, boil half for drinking, and use the rest for cleaning, washing up, etc. Moose, bear, wolves, elk, deer, etc etc. By the end of that year, I had muscles in places I didn't even know muscles grew lol! Most physically fit I've ever been. Man, I miss it! Watching your channel gives me back some of that amazing feeling. I'm 46 now, I was 29 back then.

Thank you for these videos they are incredibly relaxing to watch and I immensely enjoy getting a glimpse into your life. If I could go live this way I would. I personally have had a 2017 of self improvement with focus on health and family. I am soon to be 53 yrs old. Since Mid-March until now I have lost 85 lbs. with my goal 25 lbs away. After five Back surgeries over 15 years I continued to blame my back issues instead of my bad personal habits. Everything in my life has improved along with my health. I went years with never setting any personal goals other than career goals as a salesman in the restaurant equipment industry. A new lease on life really. Finding and following KZbin creators such as yourself have helped me keep the focus concentrating more on self reliance. Thank You for being part of the best year I’ve had in a very long time.

You Sir, have just earned a respect from me that not many people get. There are a LOT of people who try to sneak thinkgs into peoples food that they KNOW someone will not want to eat. That simply shows a blatant disrespect for someone as a human being. There are very few people in this world that I trust enough to not watch to see what is added.....I have removed pork from my diet over 30 years ago. there are a LOT of people that feel it is their duty to sneak it into something to trick me into eating it. Those individuals earn a position of never eat anything they have a hand in making again. To me, it makes no difference if it is religious reasons, or personal preference. Respect the person next to you. Your statement of saying you don't try to trick people and offer an honest alternate, shows your respect to others as humans beings.

So how much money should I have saved up by the time I retire ?
@1caramarie6 жыл бұрын
That depends of the person and what they expect. I'm retired and live on less than $700 a month (for everything except the house), which allows me to pay all the extra income for the house, which will be paid off in less than 2 years. I have savings which I don't touch. My property includes a house 2,800 sq feet, a cottage and 1/3 of an acre, which means I'm not poor. I have everything I need already and grow some of what I eat, because most food sold is junk. How much money do you have saved? And how much do you spend? Are you planing to travel or have expensive hobbies? (Don't need to tell me, just figure it for yourself.) You do NOT need a million dollars like the "experts" tell you.

She is such a well behaving and very friendly dog and it is so nice to see you both communicating in a unique way! What a faithful and great friend you have in her! - I love to follow your project of "My Self Reliance" step by step, so again thank you Shawn, so very much for let us many subscribers be excited and to have this opportunity to follow your skillful work day by day, and to be thereby almost like a part of this your proceeding and also exciting work of yours sir! WOW - always impressed with your presentations. Your "rambling" was engaging and absorbed. I'm 20 years older than you and lead a simple life similar to what you choose (and compromise). In 20 years these present days become your distant past. 48 is indeed 'young' - trust me. We love your pup; please mention her name and age in a future video. Stay determined and healthy. Greetings from Catskill Mountains, NY.

I love the string of lights, your wife put up in the loft! Very cozy. Based on that, and also hearing you describe other tasks she works on, she sounds like a real home-maker. I really enjoy seeing Callie, too. Thank you again for your channel. Your hard work is paying off, and we can vicariously enjoy the rewards, and the beautiful scenery, too! Lastly: I think all of us viewers can agree: We don't perceive your "reflections" as rambling, at all. You're just providing "lessons learned", that we can all benefit from.

Silk is rarely used at altitude. An overwhelming majority of alpinists wear merino wool base layers. Sometimes with a polyester face fabric to improve abrasion resistance. There are some synthetic base layers that perform almost as well as merino and are made entirely from dinosaur squeezings. As you know, the real concern with high-exertion activities in cold weather is maintaining the ability to wick sweat and stay as dry as possible. If you overheat and get soaked in your own sweat, you could be in serious trouble once you stop moving. Merino is still unparalleled in this regard.

You need to cover the bottom of the door with a piece of deerskin to keep the cabin warm for your dog.🐩 Poor critter!🐈 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁

I notice sunlight coming through the door and from underneath. Was going to comment about it but he started fixing it as I was looking to see if anyone else mentioned it.

Make a sauna :D I'm Finnish and almost every cabin has one as a bathing building (next to a lake preferably).
@granteditslifeoutdoors.91946 жыл бұрын
for a real authentic build Shawn could go with a savusauna or smoke sauna. This was the way it was done old school. A bit messy tho. I agree; sauna is the best for bathing after a long day of hard work. Jump in the lake or snow. Kippis.
@MySelfReliance6 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I need to do more research, but I'm thinking a sauna/bath-house kind of idea. So basically a sauna with a shower option.
@granteditslifeoutdoors.91946 жыл бұрын
Shawn you've inspired me of late - I'm just finishing my sauna at my recreation property (i went out last week to work on interior finishing in -30 C!). A stainless hot water reservoir on your sauna stove and water buckets to mix hot and cold is a great basic set up if you just dump the water over you. I know most people want that shower head tho.
@marko-seta976 жыл бұрын
We Finns still have often quite primitive saunas in many summer cottages, just one room with sauna stove, boiler for heating the bathing water and some buckets of cold lake water to mix. Saves water and effort if you have an option to dive in the lake right from the door.

Loved this video Shawn . I had a black lab for 12 years as my backwoods buddy. He spent many nights at my feet around the campfire. Many jaunts for firewood and life changing for me. Inspired me to buy boats, and a camper to take him on many adventures.

I just subscribed. You probably wont see this but..Me and my wife and two roddlers just bought our first home on 6acres last year and it was a 1960 block home with all the floors rotted to the ground.it had been abandoned for 15 years. Im 26 and my wife is 23. We have as of now built all the floors up. Ran pluming from the 200 ft in the ground up and into the house.did all the electrical from the pole all the way through the house. All drywalled and pretty much everything accept the 4 standing block walls we started with..i hold the same values of a set of hardworking hands and a sense to learn and use them. Good on ya and your abilities.

Again a pleasure to watch this video and to learn a little about you. I command you for wanting/making change in your diet and taking care of your health ; it is so important. As for the beautiful Cali, it is true that you have to care and feed her and it might be a little difficult to do some things because of having to watch for her. In the other hand, she loves you and your wife and children unconditionally, she brings joy every day to all of you, she is your companion so that is a great plus I think - Much appreciation for your videos - Rosalind -

Nice cabin but your front door is not winterproof(you see daylight through it...), you lose alot of warmth that way, just a friendly nordic tip. Best to you !
@MySelfReliance6 жыл бұрын
Realist 2.0 Still lots of things undone, but I'll get to it. The floor insulation this week was a game changer - so much warmer at floor level now, even with a draft from the door. Fortunately, it's only real drafty when we get a south wind.

In the mean time, you could just hang a blanket or sheet of plastic over the door from the inside... I do that in my 1883 Victorian house in the winter! Got one up now....

Dogs are good warning alarm of a sort, they can scare off certain predators, and they are companions. Two dogs keep each other company better then one human does.
