My Self Reliance

Күн бұрын

A busy autumn week focused on food, heat and power - harvesting vegetables from the garden and storing them in the cold cellar, installing solar panels for electricity, moose hunting for meat, cutting firewood and shingling the firewood shed, traditional archery practice for deer season, cooking with cast iron on the wood stove and keeping my dog Cali the golden retriever entertained.

I love seeing all the vegetables. Years ago my husband and ai used to grow a huge garden to feed our nine kids and it was very productive. He has passed now and I am alone and I miss those days. It was like a piece of Heaven on Earth. We loved all the great foods and the nutrition they gave our family. Keep up the awesome work and good luck.

Wow, you've come a long way Shawn, the cabin looks great. It's amazing to see this fully furnished and completed cabin when it was just a bunch of logs earlier in the year. I'm mystified how you're able to complete so much in such a short amount of time, simply amazing Shawn, it's just beautiful.

Fascinating to witness all the planning that went into a root celler full of high quality food. I learned a lot, even though I have been a student of and root-cellaring since the day I stepped into my great aunt's on the Kansas prairie. It was an Aladdin's cave of colors and smells, in baskets, on shelves, in crocks, the long strings of onions and peppers. Of course she also grew her own lemons, the size of big oranges, in her own little greenhouse, this back in 1965! You are keeping a true art form alive, Mr. James. Aunt Lillian would have loved you.

That was such a wonderfully enjoyable video to watch Shawn. Its amazing how nuch youve gotten done before the snow falls this fall. I absolutely love your cozy cabin in the woods. Gratification you must have for yourself knowing youve done it all by yourself. Just amzaing. You truly are a man of the wilderness and have conqured everything life has thrown at you. I love the ambience of the view through your window from the outside in with just enough light to give it that cozy cabin look and feel. What a wonderful dream your living, the one you've always wanted to build and live. To have to start all over again after the issues with those miserable people at the old cabin you sold and to be where you are today with the new cabin is truly a blessing. Still more to build but your settled in really nicely now and can just relax and build at your leisure. Congratulations on the wonderful accomplishment, Shawn.

Such a great job on the cabin and everything else you’ve put your hands to.👏 A little advice to you if I may? Separate the potatoes so they don’t touch each other. If they start to rot it will quickly spread to all that it touches. Also lay straw doesn’t mater what kind of straw down first then potatoes on top. This way it helps prevent moisture that could cause rot and makes it easier to clean up a mess if they start to rot. I wouldn’t put them up on the shelves if it was me instead I’d lay them on the floor on top of hay or straw of some kind. It will save you time and energy cleaning up a rotten smelly mess if on the floor instead of the shelves. Enjoy all the hard work of your labor for many years to come.

A tip. We had a cellar. Dad had a 3 8nches of sand in it. In it we buried our Potawatomi, kohlrabi, carrots, cabbage we made into Sauerkraut kept it in old Whiskey Barrels. Then covered the root veggies with more sand. It kept good all winter. The next year we'll have our veggi garden.

I grew up in a time (born in 1946) when so many families were living in homes built by the man of the house. Granted it was not a wildernesses setting, but none the less after a full days work would work on the construction of their house. My dad made all the cement block, raised the walls, made the trusses for the roof & even the cabinets throughout. That house & many others are standing still today over 70+ years later. I live in the Rocky Mountains. There were no roads for materials used. All were hauled to to the site on their backs after a flat area was carved out by hand making room for house & later a small garden. Behind the house we're carved tunnels which served as storage for food. In all of this , let's not forget the women who worked along side their men. Women who wore the same callouses their husbands did. It was always great going home from school cuz the smell of freshly baked tortillas filled the air of our neighborhood. Nothing better than a fresh hot tortilla with butter. Yes, I admire Shawn, but not with that idolized worship so often displayed. Because my dad was so physical all his life. He could do 10 pushups & 10 chin ups at 80.

Only thing missing is a couple of goats and chickens for additional nourishment and entertainment. This guy is living the way people were meant to live.

You have a gift, Shawn. Watching you cut down trees , build with you hands, then live in your construction, has been a treat.
