Hi My Forest Hobby, yes the sounds of the night can be a little worrying when doing overnighters for the first time, but once you understand what animals are causing those sounds, then you can begin to relax. The noise in the video was from a deer(Roe deer) and it is an alarm call, which is to warn other deer nearby, that some danger is close by, in this case the deer probably stumbled into Swedwoods camp, and gave the deer a fright. I remember my very first solo overnighter, some twenty odd years ago, i was camped in the side of a wood next to a field which had sheep in it, it was also February and it got dark early, so as i sat next to my fire in the dark, i heard a coughing that sounded like there was someone not to far away from my camp, i sat there frozen trying to get a fix from which direction it came, there was silence, then it happened again but closer this time, so i turned my torch on the invader, and there stood a few meters away, a sheep!, it just stood there for a few minutes in silence, and then started to cough!! As i say it sounded so human like, as though it had smoked cigarettes twenty times a day for years. I later discovered that the reason for the cough is that the poor sheep must of had a lung fluke, a parasite of the lungs. But my night of strange sounds was not over yet! At around 2.30am, i was woken by a screaming sound, that sounded like a girl was being attacked, it was blood curdling, i sat there with my heart pounding, thinking what the hell was that, it did it again a couple of more times, but each time the sound was getting farther away, eventually i managed to get to sleep. The next day i wandered home more tired than i had went out, i thought that bushcraft camping is supposed to be relaxing! So once home i did a little research to discover what i heard out in the dark woods, it turns out that what i heard was a female Red Fox calling out for a mate, and February is mating time for Foxes. So not wanting any more sleepless nights outdoors i began to search the internet for recordings of animal calls that are in my country(Scotland), and i used that to help with identifying the night time sounds. It helped greatly because rather than being afraid when hearing a sound, like the deer barking, i thought great there is an animal nearby sharing my camp, it allowed me to relax and enjoy the experience, and i felt closer to nature. I hope this will help you to get out and spend a night in the company of nature, as it is a truly magical experience. Cheers Stuart.

I really like the lightweight bucksaw, but I was thinking: maybe you can make the sides a little shorter, so that it will become more lighter, and takes less space. It's just a thought to share some ideas, however i found it really nice saw! Sorry for the bad english, i'm italian. As always beautiful video, thank you very much for this journeys. Ettore
@Swedwoods4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! There is really no need to make the pipes shorter. You don't need more lightweight than it is. Because a longer pipe doesn't take up more space than a short pipe in a backpack. My axe and fishing rod is just as long and longer so it would be pointless doing so storing it the way I do on the back pack. And the tiny space that would be won is not worth it when you loose the ability to saw through thick logs! But sure I would maybe make a smaller version for a small daypack, but the biggest problem is that if you makes the pipes shorter there is no such small saw blade to store inside of it. This is the shortest there is. And even if there were smaller blades for sale...the saw stroke would be too short...and you might as well just get a small folding saw.
@19ettore984 жыл бұрын
@@Swedwoods Yep you're absolutely right. I was thinking about that and I agree with you. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Waiting for the next journey. Keep it up!
