This how to video shows how to start a fire using a magnifying lens, a piece of donkey dung and the sun.
The video is presented by Gordon Dedman, founder of Bushcraft Survival Australia (BSA). Gordon has travelled extensively and completed numerous Survival and Bushcraft Courses worldwide at schools run by Ray Mears, Dave Canterbury, Lofty Wiseman and Bob Cooper.
Gordon is a former member of the Australian Army 1st Commando Regiment and is presently attached to NORFORCE, an Australian Army Reserve Regional Force Surveillance unit (RFSU).
NORFORCE conducts patrols in the remote areas of Northern Australia, working closely with Aboriginal communities.

Thanks so much for the lovely comments. You can also produce an ember with a clear plastic bottle filled with water and kangaroo pooh….although it takes a while to get the right focal length.

Weird is nice and a pleasant change. Lighting a fire with kangaroo pooh and a plastic bottle is even weirder…..yet to come!

Thanks, it also works with a clear plastic bottle filled with water as the lens. Will do a video on that sometime.

do the dried out needles not burn from the magnifying glass? did you really need to use horse shit to ignite the tinder?

The point was to show that any herbivore scat can be used as tinder as it is compressed grass fibres. No, Casuarina needles in this case do not have a fine enough texture to light directly with a magnifying glass (they will not hold an ember). Most things won't. Herbivore dung will hold an ember so you can transfer it to a tinder bundle and blow into flame. Thanks for the question
