I have the Bushmills 16yo, which is said to be the more intense one. The aroma is good and the mouthfeel is mild with a lot of flavours by layers. I think maybe the mild mouthfeel is the pursuit of the Irish whisky with 3-time distillation. A higher ABV may interfere with the no sharpness mouthfeel.

Concur on the ABV points you made and we’d all like for the prices to be where they were 2-3 years ago (many reasons for that increase) - but that is the world of whisk(e)y we live in now.

I've picked up a bottle of Midleton Very Rare Barry Crockett instead and would be interested in your thoughts on that. I hope you are staying safe with all the fires we are having this year.
When the nose/palate changes once the whiskey has dropped below the shoulder in the bottle, is that because of the amount of air stored in the bottle when it's at that level?

As a reviewer you may want to experience everything that happens as you go from the neck pour to the middle of the bottle. Myself I have started to open a bottle and pour a wee neck pour dram then split it into two bottles to open up. If I find the neck pour is very good will try again the next day to see where we are. If it seemed tight will wait a week. Recently did this with a Balcones single malt K&L store pick cask and had to wait a month for it to calm down and integrate all that virgin oak wood bomb. I have a feeling if 35% ABV was the legal requirement, then this would be 35%. Sorry but diluting to the ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM is a hard buy. Are we sure this wouldn’t be better at 42%? 45%? Or is it coincidence that 40% is the best ABV for this expression? This is a clear try before you buy.
@catnapgee53574 жыл бұрын
Many great whisky's might be better with 2 or 3 abv higher .. but then, the price might be higher, the quality of the whisky might demand a higher abv .. which if is the case, ppl often add water to anyways. My theory is, with good whiskies and reputable distilleries, if you see a whisky at 40% then that's a confidence dilution. It implies the whisky can still hold it's own at 40% because it's loaded with quality. As well, the character for aged whiskies is often presented better at 40% abv to only further emphasize it's smoothest. Slainte!

I really cant decide on this bottle. It is available in my area. I am a bushmills fan and Irish whiskey is my favorite whiskey especially single pot still. I can get multiple bottles of many Irish whiskies for the price of this bottle. I am really disappointed in the 12 yr old bushmills I got for Christmas. I would rather have the 10 and 16. But for the value my favorite is the black bush. So i just dont know if i can go over $200 for this. I can get 2-3 great bottles of other Irish like a red spot and a green spot in my market for $200. Or a Redbreast 12 cast strength and a powers john lane. I always consider two solid bottles over 1 that may leave me burned.

Great review! I also had the experience with it needing to open up before it reached its full potential. The price is slightly less here in Canada but it is still not cheap. I’m only really ever going to spend 100 plus on Irish whiskey, the pot still stuff is in another league to everything else in my humble opinion, but in no world am I shelling out 200 for something at 40% (and this is a single malt rather than pot still, but again that’s a personal preference). A good whiskey for sure. Only ever had a couple of glasses of it from a pal. I remember it was a lot cheaper a few years ago.But at €175+ here, it should at least be natural colour and non CF to be its best , I just don't think the optimal presentation or the wow factor is there enough to spend so much. Its a €100 - €120 worth as is. Though the way whiskey prices are ramping up, even for standard core expressions is a bit worrying. Seems whiskey could become an elitist tipple if its not careful... IMHO....

Not sure if you noticed it (and my sample size of whiskey tasting is surely smaller than yours), but would you say it'd be an incorrect generalization, that a younger whiskey tastes better on the neck pour and then gets worse as the air gets into it? And the Older whiskeys are worse on the neck pour and get better as the air hits it?
@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies4 жыл бұрын
I've not found any major differences in the age of the whisky in terms of waiting for it to open up. Thus far it just seems some whiskies need to open up with time and others don't.

Hi Erik great review - stupid questions I'm trying to learn, is it a simple case of upping the abv to get the oomph your looking for to improve the whiskey (or any whisky)? Does the flavour profile and other factors have a part to play in this. Is it case of whether the profile of the whiskey can handle the extra abv without being diminished or is it always the case that the profile will be improved with more abv? Would appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks.
@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies4 жыл бұрын
You can increase the ABV without improving flavor. More alcohol won't improve an inferior cask. But, the alcohol does improve mouth feel and texture. So while increasing ABV may help it won't necessarily do so and and some whiskies are better at lower ABV.

I’ve recently gotten into whiskeys, rums and tequilas (more whiskeys and rums) however I have seen/heard a lot of reviewers (Whiskey Vault/Tribe, Bourbon Junkies, Fred Minnick, yourself and others) on KZbin push for higher ABV in distilled spirits and I’ve asked why? Isn’t the point of drinking to enjoy the distilled spirits is not get drunk? I find that I like lower proof distilled spirits because they have less of a backend burn and isn’t harsh going down (smooth).. I seem to find the smoother distilled spirits are lower ABV; maybe it’s me being an apprentice and not a journeyman, or craftsman. Are there any objective values in higher ABV for distilled spirits if I’m trying to really grow in my appreciation and evaluation of my new hobby? I’m not drinking to get inebriated, I’m trying to learn and understand the complexities of the distilled spirits. Please help me on my growth path.

Hey Erik, great video, as usual. I would not buy this whiskey at that price. It's just too much money, and I want more bang for my buck. I can probably find something more interesting at that price. Generally-speaking, I can agree with your comment about not caring if there is more alcohol if the flavors and aromas are delivering at 40%ABV. It's also a matter of preference for the drinker. People have to remember the producer is making and blending the spirit with a type of customer in-mind, or where it fits in someone's rotation, like someone that wants an aged spirit with complexity but they may not want to fuss about adding water, waiting even longer for it to open up, etc. Great review. I've not drunk it so I can't really say if it's worth it or not. I doubt it. The problem is that Irish whiskey is overpriced in general for what it is. What it is, in general, is filtered, coloured, 40% abv and more often than not lacking an age statement. This is like a superior version of that, a sort of Irish Johnnie Walker Blue. I'm sure it tastes good but it would still taste good if it was half the price. If Ardbeg 10 doubled in price overnight we would still like what's in the bottle but we wouldn't think it good value. It's still possible to buy wonderful Japanese age statements but they aren't worth it. I enjoy salad but I wouldn't spend £50 on one because I know I'm not getting what I pay for. Bushmills have an old fashioned mindset like Glenfiddich and Dalmore to name but two. I'm afraid I believe that 40% abv is acceptable for entry level and/or inexpensive whisky. There's a market for whiskey like Bushmills 21 but I'm not it. Thoughtful review Erik and good tasting notes.
