Bushradical Google search for “round threaded nut studs” or “threaded sleeve rod bar”. The underside of the micarta is recessed where the nut studs will sit. You install the nut studs through the holes drilled in the knife blank and sandwich them in between the micarta scales. Attach you screws and you have a removable handle. Hi Dave, I just want to give you a quick bit of information you might want to look into. I started making puukko knives last year and I messed around with how to make the most comfortable handles, what I found was that when you grasp a knife, the most comfortable handles didn't allow any fingers to wrap fully around the grip. My first knife had a handle that allowed my bottom 2 fingers to wrap all the way to my palm, this made it so my hand fatigued quickly during use with a standard hammer grip. I have since made knives that followed the rule where none of my fingers wrapped around all the way to my palm and they cause little to no fatigue in use. Not sure if this will help much but it was just something interesting I observed through trial and error that may be useful for you in the future.
@Bushradical5 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much, thats a good piece of info. I tend too make handles a bit on the small side so its a very good thing to be aware of. I appreciate it.

@blueeyeswhitedragon98395 жыл бұрын
David Berry:- One problem with individual production vs. waterjet pattern cutting a couple dozen knife blanks is boredom of doing the same thing over & over for your customers' orders and the need to keep your fan base happy by delivering those knives in a decent time frame. It's one thing to hand make a dozen knives of one pattern, but a whole different story if your orders get into the hundreds. The answer is of course to do both...hand cut some for experimentation & fun, but waterjet popular selling knives to keep up with demand. Let's hope Dave has the orders for this to be a problem!

My preference would be a puuko style blade with a straight spine and high scandi or even a saber grind and a broomstick handle with a palm swell. Pins but also epoxy so no water or dirt can come in between the blade and the handle. The handle thick indeed because most of these knives have handles that are too thin and cause fatigue. I would say the BCNW1 knife with a bit longer handle and a rounded of pommel. A lot of knife handles are too small for big hands. As handle materials micarta or G10. I do prefer a lanyard hole. I very rarely use a lanyard but I like the option when working above water, deep snow, steep hills, etc. For a smaller knife like this for me the most important is comfortable in the hand with a long and thick enough handle for every grip and easy to clean. A narrow puuko style blade to get in these small paces when doing fine carving or butchering. That's also the reason why I don't like the Kephart style blade design. It's just to broad for fine tasks. As a name I would suggest Alas knives because you're from Alaska.

Thanks for the input DB! I appreciate it. Just yesterday I met with a guy named Ben Piersma who owns an online bushcraft supply website....Ben's Backwoods. He just lives right up my road. Anyway...he designed a knife called the "Lagom". LT wright makes this knife. And it sounds just like what you're talking about. I got to check one out, and it was a very nice design.
@StevanOutdoor5 жыл бұрын
@@Bushradical I have heard of him and know the Lagom design and like it! Ben Piersma you say. He's Dutch like me. Piersma is a Dutch last name. Well, he's probably American but his ancestors arrived from The Netherlands, probably Friesland. I did not know he lives in Alaska, but that's great that he lives close to you. His Lagom design is very well tested and has many likes on youtube. It's indeed the design I talk about. Simple and straight forward and easy to clean. I do like LT Wright knives and BHK also. O1 steel is not the best for the damp and wet environment I live in or go on vacations. Never been to Alaska but visited the PNW and love the nature there. But I also love Colombia and the nature there. Planning on organizing bushcraft trips to different parts, like the PNW, Colombia, Brazil, etc. Maybe Alaska? I have tested many knives in my life because I'm old, including some Enzo knives from Finland. In Colombia the Enzo Elver in 12c27 stainless and one of my most used bushcraft knives is the Enzo trapper in D2 but I did round of the pommel section because it gave me hotspots. I read about the problems some people were having with D2 steel in cold conditions so I took it out in winter, left it outside the camp in freezing conditions and in the morning started batoning and all is fine. Never had a chip in that blade (knock on wood). I like the fact that's it's semi stainless for food prep reasons. I'm not a knife maker, but I'll give you some food for thought I only gave to Enzo/Brisa so far. A lot of knives come with different size blades but never with different size handles. I would introduce these different size handles if I was a knife maker. Atb from Holland and say hello to Ben also Steve

Dave i like your Kephart the way it is.. maybe a little longer blade... i wanted a kephart and was hoping Becker would make one and he did. I was one of the first kids on the block to get one. I like the slight flair on the scales, and i like the wood scale. Your version is a great modern adaption of that blade. It looks almost perfect the way it is. After studying blade and shapes before i got the BK62 i got a LT Wright Outback made for Knife HQ. It has a smaller blade with a little more rounded handle, I got it because i liked the handle flare Kephart had. Kepharts philosophy and practice lead him to that thin, homely, noting special knife. But i agree with becker, the knife feels real good in your hand, it indexes perfectly, and it just wants to cut. I find the thinner handle unintuitively does not fatigues my hand . the bigger handles have hot spot they hurt my palm. The BK62 is an exact replica. Kephart use the knife a lot.. any wide shoulder rounded or not with a strong grip has a hot spot in the palm. Yours looks Kephart perfect. don't change a thing. the your innovation to the drop point is nice over the spear, and a full grind or a very high sabre would be ideal.. after all you have to cook with thing and a scandi just doesn't cook well because the shoulder of the grind gets in the way fast. easy to sharpen for the novice but it does not cut elegantly and after the cut crushes as apposed to moving through cleanly making thin slices. the thin scales on the Kephart make the for better control with your fore finger down the back of the blade with a nice grip on the handle and the flair on the scales is a more comfortable stop for your grip( better the pinch grip on the genisis or the brothers of bush craft) for skinning. Fore finger on the spine thumb on the flair and man the knife is anchored. solid. The LT outback is similar but the bulb in the center of the handle hurts my palm. i think in general people want a one tool knife that is a mistake, a blade that will skin, butcher/fillet, whittle/carve, cook and eat with is a real good knife. Beating it trough a log is a 'Primitive Pete" thing. Dude keep the wood handle and get that flair on the heel and you have a GREAT kephart. if you insist on a fat micarta handle make that a different knife.. the bush crafters are going to love your Kephart the way it is. .i know i do.. J
@Bushradical5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jeff. I'll probably do a scandi, a Saber, and maybe a full or convex grind. I appreciate your input on the handle thickness. I like the thin scales, but they seem maybe a bit too thin......but I will for sure work in the flare on the back of the handle.

I have big hands ( I'm 6'2" and about 245) and I run into too many knives that have handles that are a bit big for my hand......So I figure I'll make my handles to have a perfect grip for a guy with my size of hands....Anything thats feels too big to me will probably feel a bit big for other people. You know the Condor Bushlore......I'm working on a similar pattern with a tighter grip to the handle.... that handle always seemed a touch longer than it needed to be ( IMO).

"BUSHRAD KNIVES" Bushrad Knives are making their point and cutting through the industry with some of the sharpest designs and innovative new takes on some of the old standards, and putting true Bushmaster blades in the hands of some of the most seasoned, experienced bush craft experts on the planet!! The pros got their experience spending thousands of hours in the bush, and where most of us would starve or freeze in an emergency situation, these experts have not only defeated tremendous odds surviving under any number of emergency situations, and folks like Les Stroud will always embrace changes and new tech, as well as innovative changes on tools every pro survivalist uses and cannot do without. So I submit, "BUSHRAD A CUT ABOVE THE REST", WHICH IS AVAILABLE TO EVEN US MERE MORTALS AND YOU DON'T NEED DEEP POCKETS, THIS WON'T CUT INTO YOUR RENT/MORTGAGE/GROCERY bills either! These are sharp knives both physically and aesthetically! Do NOT take a stab in the dark and buy knives based on labels, that can only lead to unnecessary danger and disappointment! Why not buy a knife from the actual person who makes the knives by hand as opposed to the conveyor belt mass production blades made by programmed machines on long assembly lines. For my peace of mind, and for my money, Bushrad Knives are the very best quality knives anyone could make or buy!! When it comes to tools you may need to save your life, or your family's lives God forbid, tool failure at a critical time!! With the Bushrad knives, you know each and every single one was lovingly and very carefully crafted from start to finish. If you want little custom details, you let the knife maker know and BOOM, you got it!! If there's some issue with your blade/handle, you contact the maker and get whatever it might be resolved fast!! Good luck trying that with...the other guys...sigh. There's my submission brosephus!! :) Jack - Canada

can you do a Nesmith blade?
@GaerHampton5 жыл бұрын
Even if it is more work, I think that it's better that you are going to cut out your blanks and heat treat them yourself. That more of the knife crafting that you do, the more it's a knife that you hand crafted (to state the obvious). And yeah, It sounds like it just makes more sense to not committing yourself to farming out those tasks. I'm very interested in both Minto and the "improved" Kephart designs. Knife brand name? "Boreal Blades"? (I'd say something like "Boreal Bladesmithing" but I guess that would imply that you were hammering out the steel on an anvil.)
@Bushradical5 жыл бұрын
Thanks MCO. My brother and I were going to go in together making knives under ( Black Spruce Knives) but I decided it would be better to Not be in a partnership, so He will use that name when he gets ready to put out some knives. But I like that whole up north vibe. Boreal Blades is a good name

David, now your talking!...you have waaay to much talent to have the bulk of labor out sourced! Your designs are spot on for the BC community, as well as for hunters!...shops com'n along...should be exciting to see where this leads you...wishing you much success amigo!...woods
@Bushradical5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Woods! I'm getting most of my blanks cut out and grinding the bevels.....pretty soon I'll be ready to heat treat. I ordered a Stamp today to stamp the blades....so once I stamp my knives I'll be ready to heat treat.

First I know its about 1 1/2 year old video but I'm still catching up. Lol. Second and probably most important damn that's a kickass design and to be making your own knives is something I can't even put into words ! I'm a knife nut and have way too many to count !! Can't reinvent the wheel but there's always room for a personal twist ! Third I think at least one of your knives should be called the Whipple ! It's an awesome last name thats my vote for one of them if your still making them ! Just rolls off the tongue has something about it that screams for a knife especially to be named that ! Maybe a bone or antler handle on those. Maybe a gut knife. Ripper maybe or maybe not. Fourth how do I get a Minto (sp) ? Knew it was your place as soon as u said the name ! Sheath ? That one looks like the true all around knife ! Also a thinner blace one could be called Brookie for obvious reasons but more of a fish cleaning/filet knife. Thanks and stay safe Dave !!

I like the straighter or flatter back design, and you can call it the Flatback. Also, I like your drop point Kephart with the thicker handle idea, but I prefer wood scales with black liners, because I really like a 'classic' looking knife with a leather sheath. I would definitely want to buy one of each of those from you!
@Bushradical5 жыл бұрын

Doing it in-house also makes it yours. “Too many men work on the parts of things.” -Dick Proenekke I’m liking the look of that Minto. Are you doing sheaths too. I don’t buy knives often, and I only own a very few, but I’d buy one of yours if it comes with a sheath.

Dave I really like the name of Whipple, but since most of your series is about BushRadical bushcraft I really like that name very much. But everyone needs a new Whipple knife! @@@ Ok here is a different type of name: Raspberry - reason is that it is made using rasps and also is a berry good knife. Sorta funky I know.
