In thin video I we'll start from a drawing on a piece of paper transfer it to steel and cut it out. Then we'll drill our holes for pins. At that point we should be ready to take our knife blank to water jet to have it reproduced.

I just bought a portaband to cut blanks with, I was grinding flatbar in a vise but I wanted to use up these 14 inch concrete blades. I said this before I am a concrete finisher I am Cultured Concrete on FB most of the work I do is stamped concrete I was tired of slabs and track builders about 30 yrs ago, your portaband mounting system is on point cheap and useful thanks Dave.

Enjoy watching your videos Dave. It reminds me of my husband who was a jack of all trades, collected a lot of used things to restore them next to new. If he didn't have what he needed, he would build it. He was raised in a family of 14 children & they never had much. Their Dad never drove a vehicle but did have a tractor. They lived from what they produced on their farm like our family of 13 did. At least my Dad had a car.

Very intelligent decision, in making your first run a Kephart style blade! Right down to the lanyard hole. I personally don't like lanyards, but it's very smart to include it, for those that do! Sign me up for a two hole!!! Pro tip.... make a bunch.... thank me later, lol!

Nice content and approach to this build. I didn’t realize you were a knife maker, too. I also like to make knives when I can, but I don’t have the shop space to do noisy metal work. That is usually do these days is reprofile or regrind old kitchen knives down into new patterns and then put new handles on them. When I was younger living with my parents in a rural area, I could do things like blacksmithing and heat treating of steel, but that’s pretty much out of the question in apartment living.

Davy Deals! Hey brother, man I love this channel, I really and honestly do Dave. You and the little lady are just awesome salt of the earth people who I would be proud to have as friends! At 56, or as those punk kids and their transistor radios say "fiddy six" I've been places, seen things, scary things, like the day I met my wife! ") You don't meet many people with the body of knowledge you have Dave, but then there's two of yus! Brook is an absolute firecracker, and just full of knowledge and skills that would take regular slobs like me three lifetimes to know half! Then there's the skill of being great teachers! I've known people who could tear a Jumbo Jet engine apart and put it back together in a few days! Incredible mechanics, but ask them to show you how to do something and they're completely lost! You just have to look at the state of a large percent of university students today and you know that nonsense took truly monstrous incompetence at the "professor" level!! Again, if one of you two cats was a good teacher on top of all that body of skill and knowledge you both have, that would be pretty cool, but AGAIN, you're both awesome, pro teachers as well!! If that doesn't sicken jealous people enough, you're both fantastic musicians and writers too!! ! There's but one thing a person can say...HOW DARE YOU!! I love this channel, can't wait to see the next one Dave! Superior job maestro!! Jack - Canada

The drop point tip of your knife is similar to my Ontario RAT1 folder which I carry every day and love. It is very useful in all situations and agree with you that the shape will serve most users in most uses very well. I like your approach. If a knife buyer wanted one that was perfect in every aspect with laser accuracy, then any one of the mass-produced models would do. If one is looking for an artists' eye, then yours would fit the bill. Thanks, Dave for letting us look over your shoulder in your shop.

I watched this the other day. I've been thinking about those larger scraps you have left. Just a thought, how about using those to make small replica of the bigger knives, and sell some in pairs. My Dad had a beautiful set a long time ago. The sheath had a smaller sheath sewed to it so both knives used the same one. They must have came from an oriental country, because they had dragons embedded in pearl handles. Absolutely beautiful. Now I know you probably don't want to get that involved, but the big knife, small knife combo would probably sell good. Just a thought from Paul.

Excellent ideas.. very cool Great start... I got a bk62, Ian beckers reproduction of the original (he managed to acquire an original) it is a real nice knife, it has an interesting balance and can cut. I completely understand your issue and desire to change it up just a bit. What grinds are you going for. I like a saber grind.. it cuts great in all kinds if situations especially with food!. i like a knife i can cook with after all those feather sticks are carved up. Your knife is your life!.. what are your handle thoughts. i opted not to get a genesis because i didn't like the thumb notches at the blade so i got a outback the custom lt wright made for blade hq, and it is great. my other real favorite is a BK2 it is an awesome beast 1/4" thick and can cut a tomato, and field dress a Buick. Sweet knif . I love knives.. they are so much fun.. Keep at it. making a knife is the ultimate.. i am still learning (yea 50 years) to use a Washita Stone, and a Whetstone, made a strop and am considering giving up and getting a tormek just cause i want all those edges to shave... Talking knives .. love it J

Hey Jeff, I'm into Saber grinds too, so that will for sure be one grind I 'll work with. I like Wood and Micarta for handles, but I'm not into much thats "exotic". I like simple. Check out my LT wright genesis review.....I feel the same way about the thumb notches ( great knife otherwise).

Dave, try this:take pencil edge and cover the back side of drawing with broad graphite lines, make it as covered/thick as you can. Flip it over and now trace it onto the cardboard. It will preserve your original drawing AND the image won't "grow" with any mistaken lines you may have the other way.

I'm tracking with you on the blade tip. I do prefer something a bit more stabby-er-ish (I made this word up) than the traditional Kephart spearpoint so nicely done! Since you are over 1/8" thick be sure to get the grind high enough so it will still cut through space and time easily and not just be a pry bar. Congrats on the 2,000,000 subs... aim high right!

Hey Dave ! I always wanted a knife that is a little bit different then the rest! I kind of thought about adding a piece of sheet copper under each scale! Once polished out, I think it would look awesome! Especially with darker scales. What do you think?
@Bushradical
@Bushradical 5 жыл бұрын
I like it. I have been thinking of doing part of the run with copper rivets, and lanyard tube. I just think it looks awesome. Sheet copper liners would be way cool!

Is that last hole too close to the lanyard hole? It looks as if the head of the rivet and the end of the lanyard tube will almost be touching - once the lanyard hole is larger and the tubing end flared. Looking good though and I like the idea of D2 (at around 60 RC). I have one and though it's a bear to get sharp it doesn't have to be resharpened so soon.

Dave, I think that you may have read my mind! I've been somewhat attracted to Kephart knives, the that rounded spear point has always struck me as rather odd, and not very utilitarian. Congrats on 20K subs!

Congratulations on your 20k subscriber milestone. Really enjoyed this video. I know you are just beginning your knife creations but I am wondering two things: 1) will they be available for people outside the U.S. to purchase and 2) will some of your designs favour smaller hands. I find the 5" to 6"and longer handles awkward with only a palm size of 3 & 3/4" "
