If I’ve said it once . . . Do not sip on a drink, especially something hot while watching. Wait for the “commercial” breaks. Between the jump scares and the laugh out loud lines, choking, or spitting out, are inevitable. Love the mug and the reaction. 😊

Very astute noticing already how Inara acts as caretaker for the crew. More on that topic later in the series. Many Firefly fans favorite part of this episode (including mine) is that interrogation scene sequence. The ship search strikes many viewers as funny, but it is quite surprising what kind of possible clues can be found. A fingerprint, a stray hair, a doodle drawing under a table doily, etc. It seems Mal had figured out a way that Reavers add to their numbers. Mal truly understood the situation and wanted to protect everyone from any injuries, including the Alliance crew.

Kind of a running gag in this series is that various people tell Simon bullshit and he totally buys it. In the pilot, Mal lied to him that Kaylee was dead. Here, Jayne pranked him into the spacesuit.

Note that before anyone from Serenity went over to the death ship, River said there were ghosts - Simon wasn't there so he didn't hear that. Then she said there was too much screaming, and Simon told her no one was screaming. Then the -survivor- victim of the reavers woke up, and River sensed the danger - Simon didn't know what she was afraid of so he just held her and comforted her. And when River and Simon re-enter Serenity according to plan, River didn't want to go back on board because it was dangerous. Simon reassured her that the danger was over, but she was right, it WAS dangerous. Simon thinks River is hallucinating - do those sound like hallucinations to you? The problem is, River doesn't understand her own abilities any more than Simon does, so she accepts his diagnosis. When River says or does something crazy, pay attention; it's meaningful.

Train Job aired first, in early October. Then we lost a week due to sportsball scheduling conflict. Then this, the ultimate Halloween episode. While we're still trying to figure out what's going on. "Open up and see what's inside" is one of the more ominous lines ever. And the interrogation scenes were most improv, even Kaylee.

Fox only aired 11 of the 14 episodes. All 14 episodes were put in order on DVDs a year after Firefly was cancelled. It was only then that it became very popular and a cult hit. The intros are not on the DVDs. Many times a placemat is personalized with a name, just like Kaylee put her name above her room. If a placemat had the name River or Simon the Alliance would know they were there. Reavers MUCH prefer to eat you while you are still alive.

The search did strike me as funny the first time, but perhaps they were just being thorough and looking for papers or other clues that might indicate the fugitives had been on board. The guy did say to toss the entire ship. This episode definitely reinforced the idea that the reavers are very scary. And the interrogation scene was fantastic and SO well done.

Yeah, everybody always comments on the search, but they don't realize that you're not just looking for the people, you're looking for SIGNS of the people. A note somebody scribbled, jewelry somebody left behind. Anything like that. Plus, another thing nobody notices during that scene, is how they only have 7 chairs and placemats at the table, indicating that they wisely removed 2 of them so it wouldn't tip off the feds that there were supposed to be 9 people on the ship instead of 7.

I agree, they weren't just searching for fugitives - after all, this Firefly isn't the only one in existence, so the fugitives being there is only a distant possibility - but for anything at all.

I never doubted that there was a degree of power tripping by Alliance soldiers getting to toss a ship under suspicion. Looking under the placemat though was a funny and human thing to do. I can see a bored soldier doing that.

This was my first episode, since Fox aired the pilot last, and I only heard about the show when word of mouth spread about The Train Job. The interrogation scenes were a great way to meet the crew.

"Bushwhacked": What Fox TV did to "Firefly." A sort of ball game leads to an object in space, and a phantom menace.;) 1:35 I suspect that Fox TV tacked that on to the syndication package, because they NEVER showed that introduction before any episode. (Not in my DVD set, anyway.)

The part many miss about this episode is the Pennywise Ohmage in the form of the one red ballon. Joshes one warning or clue about the other hidden horror. That being, there was ten bodies that does not equal out to 16 Families. So, where are the kids? Reavers are not likely to be verry good at the hole procreating thing, so Josh was setting up in this episode where Reavers got there numbers from. 0.0 Dont think on it to much.

mal's folk explanation is the only explicit explanation we ever get for the events of this episode, but i do encourage you to reconsider the events of this episode after you've seen all the episodes and the movie.

Later perhaps as far as episode 8 but usually around 5 or 6 you'll want to slow down because there are only a few episodes left. And you'll want to savor those that you do have yet to watch.

I know why they were searching the kitchen that way. They wanted to find the bread™ that was in hiding because it could see the future and didn't want to actually witness those horrors that were about to happen. The bread™ saved itself.

The search was a little silly. You have to realize while they were looking for the 2 people they were also looking for anything else, like drugs, that could be hidden in small spaces. The idea was almost literally "no stone left unturned" in the search. There was no where IN the ship they would not have found. The Reavers... are the nightmare full in this verse. Part real part boogeyman all bad.

The pilot episode (Serenity) was aired DEAD LAST. There were 3 episodes that never made it to air. The first episode they aired was like episode 4. There were no 2 episodes they aired together in order, much less in their intended order. As for the "lead-ins", I really don't know where they came from. They MIGHT have been original airing on FUX. I've got the show on special collector's edition blu-ray and these aren't anywhere on there (not even in the "special features" menu), but I have seen many "reactors" who show them, so...

They aired it out of order on purpose to make the numbers drop so they could cancel it as if it didn't do well. The reason is they wanted all old shows from previous management to go. And fill the time slot with their own garbage ideas. To this day the people who canceled it get tormented by fans.
