Markets and dollar up. Is prorogation simply based on the need to appoint a new leader legal? Need court challenge here.

Better ask Stephen Harper about that. He was the original Poroguer. "Harper again advised the Governor General to prorogue parliament on December 30, 2009. The Prime Minister stated that this was to keep parliament in recess for the duration of the XXI Olympic Winter Games to be held in Vancouver, British Columbia, in February 2010."

@@anguscampbell1533 There's a great political cartoon for this one - not the original one, but later in 2014/2015, where Harper is dressed like a king and his squire is saying "I'm sorry, Sire, but I don't think we can prorogue Parliament this time". I'm a Conservative and I still think that cartoon is both fair and so on point. :)

After the majority of Parliamentarians have expressed no confidence in the current Government, on what grounds did the Governor General allow prorogation just so one Party can pick a new leader? Particularly in light of the immediate threat posed by the new administration in the United States. How is it possible for one failed Leader to have such power in a Parliamentary Democracy. It Boggles the mind.

I think it's going to be like in Ontario. Liberals are politically irrelevant because of over a decade of poor governance. No one is seriously challenging Doug Ford (Ontario PC) right now and I blame the Liberals for that. They squandered their tenure, blew gobs of money and have little to show for it. People haven't forgotten yet and Ford hasn't made any big mistakes yet. I'm looking at another Ontario PC mandate for 4 more years. That's going to be Canada's federal Parliament too. We're going to get a big Conservative majority first, and then we'll see... likely another smaller majority in the next election. Maybe in 8-10 years people might consider going back to the Liberals/NDP but I don't know how they're going to win back the trust.
