Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday he is stepping down as leader of Canada's Liberal Party, following rising discontent over his leadership and growing dissent within his government. Trudeau had served as Canada's prime minister since 2015. His resignation comes as U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is threatening to annex Canada. For more, we speak with Canadian activist and electoral candidate Avi Lewis for the New Democratic Party, who says that, "like Joe Biden," Trudeau "waited way too long" to step down from candidacy in upcoming national elections. Lewis calls Trump's aggressive rhetoric on Canada a "cartoon threat" that comes out of the real estate mogul's long-running use of "force" in his personal and business dealings.

I would have to believe that making it clear that a U. S. takeover of Canada would mean ending their health care system and taking on ours would make Canadians ready to take up arms to defend against such a takeover, just for that reason alone. Canada is between a rock and a hard place. What Avi Lewis does not face is that the problem is not with billionaires, but with human greed, whether corporate greed or impersonal governmental, socialistic bureaucrats. Some of the greatest philanthropists in our nation are very rich but also very generous who give their money freely to help people, and charity given by freewill donations is much more relationally sustainable than charity given by bureaucrats with coerced government taxation dollars. So it is not quite as simplistic as Avi Lewis makes it out to be, and know this reality on the history of socialism never working on practical terms, is why the NDP of Avi's grandfather David Lewis never came close to forming a government in Canada, nor will the NDP of Jagmeet Singh and Avi Lewis. In point of fact, the problem is with capitalism; so, he’s right when he says the billionaires are the problem. When a worker works their labour is taken from them at a rate that is drastically outstripped by its subsumption in the commodity produced. This means capital (profit in crude terms) will always, always require that some people (workers not billionaires) are required by the system to remain impoverished so that capital continues to accumulate. In the transformation of the state into a state for the market under neoliberalism philanthropy is a symptom of capitalism not its antidote; by giving money back to non profits or charities whose sole existence is often to remedy gaps left by the state as it works in favour of the market not care, philanthropy works to avoid the necessary of seeing capitalism as inherently hierarchical and underpinned by disposability of people and nature. There should not be billionaires. Then we would not need charity.

Philanthropy is not policy. The wealthy give only a tiny amount of their money, and always make sure they get the tax credit and their name on whatever it is. They need to pay their fair share, and too much money = too much power.
