Bro's out here like "I think when I started freelancing I was earning 2k, 3k, 4k a month and that's okay" and freelancers like me in the UK with under 5 years experience are earning anywhere between 500 to maybe 2 a month if we are lucky 😂 Alsooooo, I will leave this here because I know that you're only coming from USA perspective which is fair enough as that's what you deal with so I will add this to help internationals, but in the UK, we don't have to be registered as an LLC to get taxed on JUST the profit, if you are self employed in any way, you only pay tax on the profit, simple as that. AND also the stuff about invoicing the client for the first time with W9s/10-99s or whatever it was is NOT a thing outside of the US, just so people don't get scared haha. Perspective really is everything when it comes to anything in life.

This is such great advice. I have been in the business 50 years as a DP and you brought up some stuff that I don't myself do, which would hold me in good stead. No one educated me about money when I was a young person. Getting a credit card many years ago was a huge step for me. I use an AMEX card for business purchases (airline tickets, gas, auto expenses, etc.) and pay that each month fully. What I will do, based on today's presentation, is offer a variety of ways of paying me on each invoice. That's a great idea.

Note to freelancers: If you are invoicing/charging taxes on your jobs (depends on where you work and services provided), DO NOT go and spend that tax money. Keep a good record of how much you've charged so you don't spend it because that is not your money to keep.

Would love to hear more about the contract side of things from a DP perspective versus when you were doing the whole production company thing. Did you push for deposits or anything like that, or just cash flow the expenses yourself until net 30 came through with most folks? Also would love to hear more about pricing out pre-production time/effort versus the straightforward day and equipment rates for shooting days. Loving this series!

Thank you so much for this. Recently transitioned into being a full time freelancer and no one really tells you the amount of shit waiting for you to tackle. All of this is useful information and can be used as a guide to study further. Don't spend Tax Money guys! lol, funny until it's not.

Been following your work for a while now, currently I just graduated. I believe I have a strong portfolio, but I cant seem to land any gigs with "real world production". I live in a big city, but its such a clique group of people who do productions out here and it sucks......

Hi bro, what procedure/ strategy do you use to pay yourself as a dp?
@JRODVISUALS Жыл бұрын
What does your estimate and contract process work? Does your estimate sometimes differ from the final invoice? I ask because I normally send an estimate to a client first and then once we get a contact signed, we move forward. However, often times my estimate is a bit off and the invoice is a bit more than estimated!

Bro i love your videos, but casually calling 2000, 4000 a month „small amount of money“ is some real extreme detached from reality shit
