I studied industrial design and engineering specialising in innovation and there was a total of about 20 minutes on 'Cradle to grave' design, which means to know where it goes in the end so you design with that in mind, universities and schools NEED to embed this thought process throughout teaching anything in relation to product creation, it is not the individual who buys the products whole responsibility, it is totally on the designers and companies who ignore the end of their products life.

Arguably it is also on government for failing to regulate and society as a whole for bad habits and resistance to needed change.

It does not matter what you design if one upper management member will say use the cheaper shitty material because it brings more profit. They will do that and than that is it, off it goes to the landfill.
@Sophia-uc9qh
@Sophia-uc9qh 4 ай бұрын
@@sipati2 However, if designers shift away from using plastic in their designs, the designs presented to management will feature fewer plastic options. Instead, they will include more efficient designs that save money through better shapes causing better transport costs (for example), making plastic no longer the cheaper option.

When I was in Bali in 2007, a woman was dumping foam pear-protecting sheaths into the storm drain. I said "You know that drains to the ocean, yes". "Yes, I know!" she replied with a smile. A few days later I was on a ferry to Lombok. A father with his young kids were picking aluminum and plastic out of the garbage cans. "Recycling!" I thought. "What a good father!". Then I watched him throw the bottles and cans overboard, just so his small children could watch them float away. There is no fixing this without fixing the culture.

Their story is one of many inspirational ones on this series so BI, please keep up the good work showing other organisations good work. I bought a pair of Indosole flipflops after seeing the video on reusing old car tyres. I must say they are by far the best flip flops I have had in terms of comfort, and durability, the ones I got look classy too. I liked the blend of the company using recycled materials combined with ethical labour practices combined with the fact it is made in Indonesia. On holiday in Oman I ended up the flipflops instead of shoes/ boots to walk many Kilometres a day and didn't get any blisters. I even abseiled down a waterfall with them (not a smart move I know, but I didn't have any other footwear with me that I wanted to get wet).

Very insightful. My takeaways to lessen the plastic wastes: make and use less plastic. Have government policy of setting alternative packaging aside from plastic, educate people about harmful effects of plastic wastes so they can be more conscious about using it. The social entrepreneurship model is so good - it impacts the planet, lessens and up cycles wastes and helps people have jobs. Beautiful!

Even clothlike materials can be made from plastic. Cloths for furniture, stain resistant and easily cleanable. Plastic bricks for homes are now in use, garden nettings for big industrial farming - but not enough is put to practical use. There's tons of uses for tons of waste plastic. The people that need to care about it don't.

Don't believe me? Come to Malaysia and have a look at Klang River, then you know how dirty it is. Plus 6:55 as a Malaysian, I am not even surprised that my country tops China on plastic waste imports. Sure, plastic waste imports to Malaysia did create more job opportunities here, but it also fuel the worsening trash problem and plastic waste problem in Malaysia.

I've been living in Bali long enough to tell you that, sadly, people there, not all of course, still do not care about the trash. I've seen both wealthy and poor people throwing their trash in the river or on the road. The funniest thing is every rainy season, when their beaches are full of trash, they keep saying, "IT'S FROM JAVA." Well, that could be true, but the locals in Bali aren't helping the situation either. The Balinese government has been taking money from each tourist coming to the island, and where does all that money go? No one knows. Indeed, Bali is the ISLAND OF GOD$.

We have travelled a lot through south Asia, and it is sad and true to see that the people taking more care of them are the tourists. Their own habitants do not have the culture to maintain their paradise true.

Wonderful video. I hope they find many more products to make out of plastic waste, and any other waste they can work with.

Woooow bravo ,well done. In the same time It’s so ironic, why always foreigners/ westerners more pay attention to take initiated with genial ideas and solutions how to take care of the nature from polluted of the rubbish . Where are the local governments and well educated people to contribute to their own country? It so shame isn’t it. Again well done guys and keep going. Greeting from Scandinavian
