Salad is now associated with a trendy healthy lifestyle, but these salad are expensive. At an average price of over $10, salad is becoming unaffordable for a lot of people.

Thai and Vietnamese salads are among my favorite. Get a little mango in there, some shrimp, some chili, lemon, a variety of different nuts and and seasonings, etc. It's just so good. The best part? Like 3$ per bowl at a sit-down place.

The vibe and status and all that are built on the back of a high quality product. I can say from my experience that it has the best tasting and most satisfying salads out of the rest of the chains. Because it’s so popular and so good, people laud about it. You don’t hear about chopt and sweatleaf as much because their food tastes is lower quality but comes at the same price.

Sweetgreen is so overrated, they're trying to be the cool millennial brand but their prices are prohibitive for most people from the ages of 18 to 25, and it's not even that tasty - one could easily make it at home. There's no innovation with Sweetgreen as there are a ton of similar salad chains, however I applaud Everytable and their founders because what they're doing is truly innovative and unique - bringing healthy food at cheap and affordable prices, I really wish them all the success and I hope it spreads across the US because everyone deserves to eat healthy food at affordable prices, not only the rich and wealthy that Sweetgreen and the other salad chains target.

However, I live within walking distance of a Giant Eagle, and I go there every now and then for specialty items. Their salad bar is $8 a pound. However, they shut down to salad bar due to coronavirus. Something I don't understand, because eating healthy improves your ability to fight diseases. But hey, at least they sell ice cream and frozen french fries, because those are so much safer for you, right?

As a cruise ship chef of 12 years. It takes me one look at a sweet green bowl to conclude that the ingredients are probably less than $1. Vegetables are the cheapest ingredients in the kitchen, and since the salad is served raw. They have less labor costs than say a restaurant that has to sautee the vegetables. The whole business model is basically shark businessmen who want 90% profits. And gullible milleneals who are more than happy to let them do it. Learn to cook if you truly want your greens!

vegetable are not the cheapest ingredients in the kitchen, they are always more expensive than starches. Very high quality vegetables are actually quite pricey, though I don't think this salad chain use the most premium ingredients. But yeah, crazy profit margin either way.

My experience was in industrial food, but i too was very suspect of the idea that there are thin margins at sweetgreen. (or any trendy retail environment for that matter) I mean do you need to scout local farms or are you just washing corporate profits through people you trust? Farmers have phones and some even have websites, but you cant put a phone call about beat yields into a commercial.

They're actually organic ingredients from farms that they own and have to manage. That means the agricultural costs of hiring farmers, harvesters, equipment, refrigeration, transportation, etc. also have to be built into their salads. That's not factoring in the high rent costs of their salad shops in affluent neighborhoods, employee salaries, marketing, supply costs, utilities, etc. Being a chef on a cruise ship isn't the same as running an entire business. Do you honestly believe that their only costs are salad ingredients? There's alot of upstart costs, overhead, maintenance, franchising & scaling, etc. And that's not factoring in that their business model relies on fresh ingredients, which means there's alot of shrink from all the food that gets thrown out each night. We can criticize these kinds of inflated costs, but let's not be myopic and unreasonable in our arguments.

Well what’s the breakdown? Salad ingredients, wages, overhead & a profit margin (it would be a 25% markup to profit $3 from $15). Fast food & a lot of fast casual meals typically come in under $10 & can even most formal places have a lot of meals under $15. Very cost-inhibitive and out of reach for most, so it seems very niche-y.

Sweetgreen operates similarly to subway too, where they initially provide healthy choices and popular dishes, people then douse those dishes with extra meat, corn, and sauces. It's still definitely more healthy than say, McDonald's or Wendy's, but eating a salad with 67 garnishes is not the same thing as a chicken caesar. Conclusively, as someone born and raised in NY, I always knew that the main issue with Sweetgreen is the price point. Because only poor people, as per usual have to deal with the repercussions

There’s still a void there. Eating out is very popular. There’s a massive demand for healthy & tasty food and yet it feels as if most menus are loaded with cheat meals. I could let subway get away with its mediocrity if they were at least healthy, plus as a Louisianian why settle for that when we have poboys (it’s a wonder that subway even has a footing here but that’s besides the fact). @Jeff Webb Beef is high in saturated fat and is detrimental to your cardiovascular health. I wouldn't advise on having it on a regular basis, whereas chicken meat it's fine. The only thing which beef excels at over chicken is that it is high in iron and some zinc, but you can easily supplement this with dark green vegetables (which you should be eating anyway)

4:50 I got food poisoning from a McDonald's salad in about August/September 2018. I seriously almost died. After I made recovery about 2 weeks later. I did internet search and found many reports McDonald's had a national food poisoning crisis from the lettuce in the salads. The worst part is they knew this and continued to sell the salads. I went back to the McDonald's I purchased the killer salad from to speak with manager and asked him to please stop selling the salad because they are giving food poisoning to people. I showed him my emergency department documents and gave him printout of the news reports. I just couldn't believe he told me that he can't stop selling them. McDonald's knew they were giving people food poisoning and only cared about selling their killer salad. I will never eat a salad from McDonald's again. I don't even go anymore.

Mcdonalds recives leddace from the same suppliers as many other fast food chains. All Mcdonalds are owned independently, and are not run exactly the same. My Mcdonalds had a salmonella case with their leddace and stopped selling salads immediately. Not to say Mcdonalds is perfect or great because it's not but not all McDonald's are equal.

It really is the prep and wasted food if you want a nice salad you're going to have to find five vegetables if you want a nice salad example; cucumber, tomatoes, onions, carrots leafy greens lettuce. Then wash and cut them. Assuming its just for you you'll only use half to a quarter of each veggie and a little lettuce. The leftover veggies you just cut will go back into the fridge with the leftover lettuce and unless you want the same salad for the next two to three days the cut veggies and open lettuce will rot and go bad. Its why people rather pay 7$+ for a salad then go threw the pain of making it.

I worked near a Sweetgreen in NYC and had no kitchen. The salads are so big and filling that I would eat half at lunch and eat half for dinner. They do not allow tipping so knock 2 dollars off the price. 5 dollars a meal in NYC for quick healthy mostly organic food is fine. I would ask for extra bread and it was always givin with a smile. The employees are always cheerful, they must be treated well.

As someone that used to order from Sweetgreens relatively often working in downtown Boston (before getting laid off due to covid)- I can say without a doubt that a large part of the appeal is the ease of fresh, varied meals. When you work in an office 5 days a week, with social/life/work events throughout the week & weekend, fresh veggies you get on a Saturday might go bad before the next week is over, and its also nice to have the variety they offer at Sweetgreens. I can get a kale Caesar one day, an arugula & spinach salad the next, etc. I’d definitely agree that it’s a city thing & a thing largely popular in areas with young-middle aged individuals looking for something healthy, easy, and with lots of options. I could easily pack a basic garden salad every day, but thats not what I want nor what I’m ordering y’know? Also, it might just be a Boston thing, but you’d be hard pressed to find lunch for under $12- whether you got a burger & fries, taco plate, etc. So when salads are on the same price level as unhealthy stuff, its doesn’t feel that crazy to pick the healthier option since you’d be spending the same regardless.

NYC here, and I agree. $12 salad for lunch is pretty cheap. It’s basically the same price as Chipotle and far cheaper than the vast majority of decent restaurants in the neighborhood. Do people consider Chipotle a restaurant only the rich could afford? If not, why does Sweetgreen get this label of being expensive? Sure, you could make your own salad at home for less money, but you would have to buy all the ingredients and make them yourself, assuming they don’t go bad in the fridge before you could finish them. I tried to do that, but the ingredients were no longer fresh after two days in the fridge, so I ended up having to throw them out. When you are a young, busy person living by yourself in a big city, Sweetgreen is actually an affordable and healthy spot for a quick lunch. $12 is nothing in 2022. Many fast food meals cost more than $12.

Im really glad this video brought up the economics around healthy food. A major factor in obesity that I don’t see many people addressing is poverty. When you don’t have time to cook because you’re working multiple jobs to pay bills, you can’t afford a $10+ salad so that $6 combo at McDonald’s is where you go. Healthy fresh foods in the grocery store are more expensive too. It’s very hard to consistently afford fresh produce if you’re low income, and even harder still if you rely on social services. Eating healthy is a luxury because you can afford to do so.

As someone who's gluten intolerant, it's a lot easier to get salads, so I'm glad their an option, and believe it or not, when it comes to finding things that won't make me sick, they're actually more medium priced. I remember when I traveled to Miami in transit to Asia. My family decided to take a break outside in the city. We didn't have a lot of money. We were walking on the sidewalks where there was absolutely no people. Just a bunch of cars. And I remember waiting a good amount of time for the light to turn green so we can cross the street. Instead of realizing we had to press the button. We than entered a McDonald's needing something to eat. And we were already worried about the prices. But I remember the joy we all felt when we saw 1$ burgers. Plus the owners gave us coke drinks for free. When they saw with our traveling bags. McDonald's was a life saver back then for all of us because of its prices. But I highly doubt that salad chains will have the same impact for people that we were back then because salads just can't get affordable enough.

I eat something very similar every work night. They’re called “California Bowls” and in 2017, when I was first getting into workout/CrossFit culture, these were ubiquitous.
