My parents got one Multan made lamp in early 90s. It moved with us across many countries over the past 3 decades. Zero maintenance. Looks exactly like it did on day 1.

With the amount of time it takes to freestyle the floral designs these pieces should be sold for no less than $500. $1,000 for the large pieces at least. They’re already selling them online so I assume many of those orders are from foreign customers. If they simply appeal to rich clients the industry will thrive. They need to think bigger and not sell themselves short of their laborious craft.

It's the main difference between European and Asian cultures. Europeans were able to hold on to their arts and craftsmen and turn them into highly sought-after commodities worldwide, causing the crafts to thrive and still exist. In Asian cultures, profit took over, cultures vanished, and governments failed to protect them.

They always say that young people "aren't interested" in these crafts due to wanting higher profitability from other jobs. I feel like 90% of then aren't necessarily not interested and moreover just looking to survive in a harsh world. My family always supported my art, from a very young age, and wanted me to make a career out of it. However, schooling is expensive as Hell in the US for steady-paying jobs in art fields, even with aid. So finding work that isn't artistic, part of my heritage, or anything else is necessary. Not everyone has the skills, connections, or means to delve into this work as a career, and it's a LOT of time invested just to learn. Not everyone grows up learning this while they're available mentally and not working to support themselves or a family, either. It's just feels disingenuous, manipulative, and even a bit vindictive to say all young people from said country aren't interested in learning their heritage because they're essentially "greedy". I bet many would love to learn, if they had tons of free time and were living comfortably while doing so.

I wish I could agree with you. I wish you were right. but I have 14 grandchildren who have the know-how who aren't interested in gardening for vegetables or flowers or food or pleasure- creating bonsai trees for Beauty- sewing for necessity or pleasure- cooking canning or preserving any kind of food from fresh meat or produce ethnic or otherwise - reading actual books- ceramics painting or any kind of Art For Art's Sake- keeping a journal or hearing stories of their parents grandparents or ancestors.. all things which I enjoy doing and wistfully dream of the day they share any one of these interests/ passions lifeskills with me. I love them I'm proud of them but they have NO life skills that they choose to use on a regular basis that have to do with actual life as WE have known it. They use computers and cell phones constantly like it is an extension of their person or it is part of their consciousness- order doordash take out- watch tiktok and play video games.. this IS their life besides School and part-time jobs to pay for their food orders and credit cards. It is what it is. I'm hoping for that big solar flare that creates a new Harrington event so TVs cell phones computers and new cars stop working then this entire technology generation of young people will have the free time for a do-over. They will pick up the arts customs and culture of the people groups that connect them with the people that love them. What a lovely thought. It gives me hope and a sense of Peace just thinking about it!

I have scraped hides for tanning before, so I have at least some of the skill. I wouldn't presume to paint the designs they use, but making the actual shades looks rather fun! Or, I would buy blank shades from them, and go nuts with the painting myself!

I have one of these lamps (whether made by this family or not I don't know) that I bought almost 40 years ago. It has some damage from using a bulb that was too hot, but otherwise it's still very beautiful. It's one of my favorite possessions.
