We learned these things from high school and understood very well what was Thai and what was foreign. Cambodian could advance their "Khmer" but they found "Siam" more appealing, so they instead adopted Siam and called it Khmer result in Cambodian attack Thailand culture everywhere on internet.

The story Via Indian merchants since Ayuthaya Era, and written for royal play in Thonburi Era, in Ratanakosin Era, The king Rama 1 gathered the story to be completed, The king Rama II written some part to be a classical royal play, The king Rama VI had written the play from Indian Ramayana version. All Thai students have been studied that Ramakian adapted from Indian Ramayana. Many Thai language especially in the traditional poem or play derived or borrowed from Pali and Sanskrit, we have to translate from Thai poem to normal Thai language. 😅 Like our capital city name 😁

I watched it and it made me miss my grandfather very much. And I'm also proud as my grandfather used to handcrafting khon mask in the king's palace and was a close friend of King Rama VI of the Kingdom of Thailand. The story of my grandfather's history is recorded in the National Library in the section of King Rama VI. My grandfather was the royal artist of the royal family. In those days, it was called Luang Deplaksanaleka. Later, King Rama VI gave this title to use as the surname of my family.😊🇹🇭

Please go early in the morning because of the heat during the day may make you burnt and sweat that cant enjoy the vibe of culture. There are mural paintings about Ramakien (Thai version of Ramayana). Its length is 174 meters along the corridor will make you understand the storyline from the beginning to the end. I also do recommend to visit Wat Pra Chetupon (Wat Po) seeing how exquisite of the ornaments as well as the symmetrical inlaid on the three pagodas. Yet you will see the big reclining buddha there. Wat Po also is the very first university of Siam where initially teach Thai massage science to people until nowadays. If you come to Thailand before 5th December. The Khon event which is held at Culture Center on Kuykwang rd. is being token place. That royal Khon style is patronaged by Bangsai Royal Folk Arts and Crafts Center of Queen Sirikit. The tickets are sold online. If you are inside of cultural things. I’ll tell that The Art of Kingdom museum in Ayutdhaya is very worth to see. It’s the must of the must!! Well, even in India the Story of Ramayana differs from One region to another. As for the Credit of the Ramayan is concerned Rama is an Incarnation of lord Vishnu- the protector of our universe and no single community can claim the "Akhilandakoti bramhandanayaka" ie., The lord of Infinite universes. In southern states of India we even worship Ravana in the form of RAVANESHWAR- Ravan+Eshwar.

Indian and Hindu are the roots of Thai culture with no doubt. And I am proud to having them both Hindu and Buddhist. There are so many Hindu god in every single temple in Thailand. In private house, Superstore, government office, everywhere... even the first name of Thai people are Pli and Sanskrit. Thai people first name is similar to Indian people. We named the brige and Road as Rama I, II , III, V........ and we have our King in Ayutthaya Era names King Narai, King Rama I, II, III.....

Ayutthaya Kingdom in particular popular the Ramayana and convert the story to Thai poem and stage play so here we know it as "Ramakean" "รามเกียรติ์" aside from Thailand, Southeast Asia actually have different distinct version of Ramayana. Migration of culture from India and also later from Sri Lanka brought in Hinduism and Theravadan Buddhism, astrology, yoga which influence boxing. There are a few Thai Brahmins still too. Thai poetry has similarities with ancient Indian poetry. Mahabharat is also in ancient Siamese but less popular because it seems ancient Siamese really liked love stories and Hanuman's character. Many educated Thai people can identify which words are from Indic origins. At the most basic level our days months city names etc are all Indic. Hindu gods are emblems too.

Thai Government keeps frozen the Khon art and dance in a traditional way that they think is "traditional". When someone wants to put it into contemporary art the gov will call it blasphemy and banned or boycott it. So that is why it will fade away.

this impresses me that thai people even though they know from where the tale is originated from, they still embrace it make the tale their own and culture too and celebrate it in their own way. Ramayana in Thai is called Ramakirti (Rama-kian in Thai), and Ravana in Ramakirti is called Doskant (Tod-sa-gun in Thai pronunciatian or दशकण्ठ in Indian) which means 'he who has ten necks'.

Both 2 Indian Epics, Ramayana and Mahabharat, are widely known and part of culture of many Southeast Asian nations, with some differences in details and art depiction. By the way, the reason, in the case of Thailand, for example, why Ramayana, Ramakien (Glory of Rama) in Thai, is more known because the plot and theme is easier to understand for ordinary people, the battle between good and evil, and the praise of the monarchs' glory. In Thailand or Siam in the ancient time, the concept of "Devaraja" centered on the idea that the king was an incarnation (Avatar) of the god Vishnu and that he was a Bodhisattva (enlightened one), therefore basing his power on his religious power, his moral power, and his purity of blood. Brahmins took charge in the royal coronation and many royal ceremonies. The king was treated as a reincarnation of Hindu gods. Ayutthaya historical documents show the official titles of the kings in great variation: Indra, Shiva and Vishnu, or Rama. Seemingly, Rama was the most popular, as in "Ramathibodhi". However, Buddhist influence was also evident, as many times the king's title and "unofficial" name "Dhammaraja", an abbreviation of the Buddhist Dharmaraja. The title Rama is still being used by all kings of Chakri Dynasty which was established in 1782. Ramakien becomes the core of Thai literature and culture. For Mahabharat, the complex concept of Hindu philosophy in the story is harder to understand for the ordinary people. Notes: 1. Ramakien is based on Sothern Indian version of Ramayana. Some details were adapted with the Thai culture, even some of them may make the Indian people who read it feel like "What the..." 2. Thai words are originated from original Thai and many languages. Three languages which influence Thai language most are Khmer, Tai people received many traditions, including language, from Khmer Empire and adapted to be their own style, Pali, Thai language received many Pali words through Buddhism, and Sanskrit, Thai language received many Sanskrit words through Brahmanism - Hinduism. Many people have a joke that if you see someone with East or Southeast Asian vibe but he/she has the name that similar to Indian names, you can assume that he/she is Thai. 3. Even the majority of Thai population follow Theravada Buddhism. The combination of the majority religion in Thailand, some people call “Thai Religion”, are folk Religion, the original believe of Tai people before emigrating from Southern China to Suvannabhumi, the Mainland Southeast Asia, Brahmanism/Hinduism received both from Khmer Empire and directly from Indian Subcontinent, especially from Southern India, and Buddhism received from Indian Subcontinent and Sri Lanka. Here in Indonesia many people still use Sanskrit names and even use Hindus names yet they are Moslems. For example one of famous singer here. "Isyana Saraswati", two Hindu gods name, yet she is a moslem. Usually these people came from Java(Javanese and Sundanese people) whon were even though converted to islam yet still retains many legacy and traditions from their Hindu-Budhist ancestors making Indonesia the most tolerant moslem majority country around the world, which sadly with the deepening of Islam on the last decades, the virtues erodes along with the erosion of those Hindu-Budhist traditions, and the rise of more fundamental and radical groups here

I played as the demon king’s uncle once in a school play. My school is a bit stuck up on cultural preservation so they have all these expensive artisan heads and proper costume. When we don’t have a play the heads are kept on display on a shrine. Every time we had musical or traditional dance class we have to worship the heads on the shrine and I am always scared of looking up after bowing and seeing the head all turned to looked at me. Also fun fact a lot of girls play Rama and his brothers.

Ramayana was translated and reinterpreted multiple times in Thai history. The one we have now is Ramakien which is a rewrite/recovery of an older Ramayana version from the ruins of our previous kingdom Ayutthaya. The work was led by the current dynasty's early kings, so it was made one of Thai culture's key epic with strong ties to Theravada Buddhism.

Brahmanism/Hinduism is a minority religion in Thailand. Anyway, along with folk religion and Theravada Buddhism, the Brahmanism/Hinduism has the influence to Thai culture in many aspects, including the epic Ramakien which is Thai version of Indian epic Ramayana. In many Royal ceremonies, there are both Buddhist ceremonies and Brahmin ceremonies conducted by the Royal Brahmin Priests whose families descended from the Brahmin Family in India and had been in this position for generations. The center of Royal Brahmin Priests is the Royal Brahmin Office of the Thai Royal Court or Devasathan in Bangkok. There are also many Hindu temples, both ancient sites and the Hindu temples established by oversea Indians which are under the control of Devasathan too.

Thai actually open to every god, our Buddhism is actually the combined of Hindu and Buddhism. Some temples you might find Hindu god, Chinese deity along with Thai Buddha statue next to each other. Ramayana in particular is the most popular one since the story got translated to Thai poem format and is called "รามเกียรติ์" Ramakean. Hanuman in particular is the most popular one.

Thai people respect all Hindu gods. We know and respect Hindu gods. There will be pictures or statues to respect almost every home. Even in front of Divaree festival, we go to the Hindu temple in Silom, Bangkok. We are open to the Chinese gods we respect. Post/colonial Discourses on the Cambodian Court Dance Under the reign of King Ang Duong in the middle of nineteenth century, Cambodia was under the influence of Siamese culture. Although Cambodia was colonized by France in 1863, the royal troupe of the dance still performed Siamese repertoires. It was not until the cession of the Angkor monuments from Siam in 1907 that Angkor began to play a central role in French colonial discourse. George Groslier’s works inter alia were instrumental in historicizing the court dance as a “tradition” handed down from the Angkorean era. Groslier appealed to the colonial authorities for the protection of this “tradition” which had allegedly been on the “decline” owing to the influence of French culture. In the latter half of the 1920s the Résident Supérieur au Cambodge temporarily succeeded in transferring the royal troupe to Groslier’s control. In the 1930s members of the royal family set out to reconstruct the troupe, and the Minister of Palace named Thiounn wrote a book in which he described the court dance as Angkorean “tradition.” His book can be considered to be an attempt to appropriate colonial discourse and to construct a new narrative for the Khmers. After independence in 1953 French colonial discourse on Angkor was incorporated into Cambodian nationalism. While new repertoires such as Apsara Dance, modeled on the relief of the monuments, were created, the Buddhist Institute in Phnom Penh reprinted Thiounn’s book. Though the civil war was prolonged for 20 years and the Pol Pot regime rejected Cambodian culture with the exception of the Angkor monuments, French colonial discourse is still alive in Cambodia today. The dance has not ceased to be presented as “tradition” through the media. However, since the reign of King Ang Duong (r. 1847-59), the Cambodian court had been under the influence of Siamese culture. The Siamese influence is detectable in Khmer classical literature and temple murals too.1 ) When Ang Duong ascended the throne, the Siamese court backed him. King Norodom (r. 1860-1904) and King Sisowath (r. 1904-27), both of whom were Ang Duong’s sons, were raised at the royal palace in Bangkok. The cultural influence from Siam derived from these circumstances. Nevertheless, most of the French works have regarded the court dance as belonging to the Angkorean “tradition.” In the following chapters, these works will be scrutinized not as “academic” writings, but as discursive formation which has had a relation to French colonialism, and even to Cambodian nationalism. On the other hand, the English handbooks on the dances in Southeast Asia described the Siamese influence from the middle of the nineteenth century. But these books did not discuss how the “tradition” had been invented in the colonial period2 ) [Foley 1993: 20-25; Miettinen 1992: 140-144]. Other than these handbooks, two Ph.D. dissertations on the Cambodian dances were written in English. One was written by Paul Cravath, who depicted Siamese influences such as the change in the costumes during the reign of King Ang Duong [Cravath 1985: 150-152], and mentioned that many Siamese dancers had belonged to the royal troupe of King Norodom [ibid.: 159]. But in his conclusion, he insisted upon the “continuity” of the ritual dance from the Angkorean period, and in an article issued in a magazine, he described only the “continuity” and paid no attention to the Siamese influence [Cravath 1986]. A powerful affinity for French colonial discourse on the “tradition” can be seen in Cravath’s descriptions. The other dissertation was written by Toni Shapiro, who interviewed many dancers and teachers of the dance through participatory observation, and wrote an ethnography of good quality. In her dissertation, Shapiro described how well a teacher had been aware of the Siamese influence upon the court dance [Shapiro 1994: 105], but she did not discuss the reason why such an awareness had not been revealed in public, and her other articles mentioned nothing about the cultural influence from Siam [Shapiro 1995; 1999]. Thanks to Shapiro’s works we know what the dancers said about the dance, but then one begins to wonder as to why they spoke like that. In order to analyze the process of constructing narratives by the Khmers, it is necessary to discuss the kind of discourse which French colonialism created, and how colonial discourse influenced the colonized. Angkor was politicized in the colonial period, and it has been incorporated into Cambodian nationalism. Since 1863 when Cambodia was colonized by France, the Angkor monuments had been explored by Henri Mohot, Doudart de Lagrée, and others. The stone inscriptions had been deciphered so as to describe and glorify the history of the Angkorean civilization. On the other hand, the post-Angkorean era was, and has been, considered as an age of “decline.” Anthony Barnett remarked that these explorations and historiography had a close relationship to the justification of colonial rule, and that French-educated Cambodian elite such as Norodom Sihanouk and Pol Pot had accepted colonial historiography and a sense of “crisis” that the Khmers were to become extinct [Barnett 1990]. His article is a pioneering work criticizing the relationship between French colonialism and Cambodian nationalism. However Sihanouk and Pol Pot were not of the first generation of the Francophone elite, because the acceptance of French colonial discourse on Angkor can be traced back to the middle of the 1920s. Penny Edwards’ Ph.D. dissertation, in which the activities of the Cambodian elite in the 1920s are mentioned, is the most comprehensive work on Cambodian nationalism [Edwards 1999]. According to her, the Angkorean studies, museums, and expositions contributed to constructing a colonial discourse on Angkor, and to justifying colonial rule. Edwards surveyed newspapers and magazines to see how the politicized Angkor influenced the Cambodian elite. In this way, the connection between the French colonial discourse on Angkor and Cambodian nationalism was discussed in a few English articles, but these works did not mention the differences between colonial and postcolonial discourses on Angkor. Taking notice of the differences, it becomes obvious how consciously and selectively the Cambodian elite appropriated colonial discourse. Among Cambodian culture, attention has been paid par excellence to the court dance. It was often depicted in French writings, and troupes were sent to the metropolis on the occasion of the Colonial Expositions. After independence, the court dance has been presented as the quintessence of Cambodian national culture. In order to discuss cultural politics in colonial and postcolonial Cambodia, and to historicize the Angkorean “traidtion,” the dance plays quite an important role.

Buddhism came to the area which would become Thailand during the reign of King Ashoka the Great (304 BCE - 232 BCE, reigned 268 BCE - 232 BCE) who sent the groups of Buddhist monks or “The Envoys of Dhamma” to spread Buddhism in many areas, including Sona and Uttara who were sent to Suvannabhumi or Mainland Southeast Asia. When the first Thai Kingdom, Sukhothai Kingdom was established, Siam, the name of Thailand before 1939, received The Sinhalese Mahavihara Theravada Sect (also known as Lankavamsa/Lankavong in Thailand) from the monks who traveledto Sri Lanka to ordain in this sect lineage and study the teachings. These monks traveled back to Siam to teach the Theravada Buddhism, initially at the Nakhon Sri Thammarath in Southern Siam before coming to Sukhothai. Since then, Theravada Buddhism became the main religion in Siam and had the influences to the Thai culture in many ways. During the Ayutthaya period, King Borommakot (1680 - 1758, reigned 1733 - 1758) sent 25 monks to Sri Lanka to re-establish higher ordination which had been lost due to the warfare on the island. The Siamese Monks found the Siam Nikaya which remains one of the main monastic orders in Sri Lanka to this day. Today, there are 2 main monastic orders in Thailand, Maha Nikaya, and Dhammayuttika Nikaya found by King Rama IV (King Monkut, 1804 - 1868, reigned 1851 - 1868) who had been in monkhood for 27 years before ascending the throne. There are also the Mahayana Monastic sections originated from China (Chin Nikaya) and Annam, the ancient name of Vietnam (Annam Nikaya), both Theravada and Mahayana are invited in many Royal Ceremonies. According to the constitution, The King is a Buddhist and Upholder of religions. Note: “Suvannabhumi” is Sanskrit word which means “The Golden Land”. Many scholars believe that the origin of the word is from the abundance of the area where the rice can be cultivated very well, until the people who came to the area see the golden rice field from faraway, so the call the area as The Golden Land or Suvannabhumi.

The hell with Cambodians saying Thais stole this from them? Cambodia is irrelevant here. The Thais got this from India and they further developed further to become distinctive and unique enough to be called Thai. Ive been to India and they dont have these kind of mask designs. Ask any Indian people out there. The Khmer empire may have had big influences on Sukuthai, the first kingdom of Thai people who broke away from the empire. But onward from Ayutthaya era, Cambodia has been copying Thailand ever since. Learn some history that Thailand colonised Cambodia for hundreds of years before France arrived and the Thais gave Cambodia to France to save its independence and sovereignty. While Cambodia was under Thailand' colonization, all Cambodian high ranking personals and royalies were educated and taught cultures in Thailand. It sad that most Cambodians believe their today cultures have anything to do with Angkorian's, which all got wiped out long time ago. In fact, most of their cultures today are Thai influences as a result of Cambodia being Thailand's colony. This is why education is so important but unfortunately it is serious lacking in Cambodia.

India is the mainstay of Thailand through the migration of the ruling class in the past. Come and join with the indigenous people, accepting religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, various languages, adapting to what was originally in the area. along with adapting to the geography, weather conditions, Thai costumes, and other cultures In Thailand there is a similar bass. But they are different in many ways. Even Thai people can't understand them, right? Because it is a combination with the ancient local people passed down from generation to generation. Later, another culture and language, from the Tai tribe from southern China, was added into the mix. Even from the south of Thailand, which was imported from another source in India, it also came into the mix. This makes both the dress and culture and architecture in Thailand quite diverse, but the main line is still Indian which is the basis of many things in Thai culture.

Reminds me of traditional Bhaona theatre (except Bhaona is not dancing but exaggerated drama like Kabuki theatre of Japan) from Assam in Northeast India, where people dress up in Bamboo Masks and costumes and perform mythical stories out. Happens in every town and village.

The event is arranged by Bangsai Arts and Crafts Centre of H.M. Queen Sirikit of Thailand. The ticket are sold online at Thai ticket major website. If you are available and still in Thailand. I highly recommend this Khon event. We have been exhibiting Khon in series each year by year for more than 10 years. It’s very special one since it’s modified into a new style yet preserve some traditional core with the performance. This event has been patronized by the Queen Mother Sirikit. Dont miss na ka.
