Animal rights campaigns and changing trends have pushed the real fur industry into decline. Faux fur companies are competing to fill the void. But are fakes made mostly from plastic really the way to go?

There hasn’t been a single word about WHY fur was so valuable to begin with. Imagine yourself in a cold winter in pre modern times. No central heating, no conveniences, no deliveries. Fur is incredibly warm and it had allowed humans to expand into previously unsurvivable conditions, it has protected health and well-being. To this day it is very, very hard to beat the warmth of a real fur coat, because of the microscopic structures of each hair trapping warm air and insulating you from the cold. That is why a lot of places with harsher climates are not going to let go of their furs no matter how much animal rights activists make noise: it’s a matter of life and death in -40C with piercing wind and you are better off in real fur than just about anything else. Just to be clear, it is a matter of where and in what conditions you live. You don’t need a god damn fur coat in LA. But if you lived through Russian winters for most of your life like I have you will look at this differently.

The Cossacks called mink "soft gold" and it was as good as cash on the frontier. Clans generally had to pay five furs tax to the Tsar, which were sold for a fortune in Europe. The fur trade is part of what caused Russians to migrate into Siberia.

same thing in the arctic regions of canada and alaska. other than gold and eventually oil, people mostly went there to trap fur animals. Minks and foxes actually eat slaughter waste that would otherwise be unusable(poultry, fish, cattle etc.), because it isn't seen as fit for human or pet consumtion. Mink and fox bodies are also used when they make the food for them so it doesn't all go to waste. If there any additional leftovers they're used to produce diesel that can warm homes or be used instead of regular diesel.

In all honesty, if you hunt/farm the animals locally, to eat and use their leather/fur (or any other parts), you make less environmental impact than shopping some new “ethical” clothes and food from other faraway places esp overseas. The sheer amount of energy used in the big factories and transportation is very destructive to earth. It is cruel to living beings around the world as well, but people don’t seem to mind it as long as they are not killing or showing off the animals directly, which is basically sentimental bs. The same goes for buying fruits and vegetables. You don’t need special avocados white strawberries or imported exotic fruits, truly. Use what you have there nearby. If fur is there next to you and it lasts generations, by all means use the fur. It’s so tiring to see we all increase environmental damage by going further and further from simple local living.

@@dhruvatri8894 What I mean is: suppose you live in Russia Austria or Poland, and your house is near a fox fur farm (very common). You make less environmental impact if you buy the fur from that farm, than ordering some synthetic clothing from Asia to be transported all the way to Siberia. The oil usage in trucks, ships, or planes is massive, leading to global warming >> more dead animals everywhere, even the polar bears! And in -40 degrees no synthetic clothing is as warm as fur anyway. I can attest to this as I experienced Austria deep winter without fur once. Goodness never again.

Also there's still a lot of vintage furs, leather, persian lamb coats of all kinds on the second hand market. It would be unethical to just throw all those fully functional clothes away and many jackets and coats look like new. I inherited my grandma's mink jacket, it's 40 years old and still looks brand new and I will continue to take care of it well so that it can last for as long as possible. In my opinion that's way better than buying fast fashion plastic junk that will look bad in a few years and has been produced in slavery like conditions in sweatshops. Those fast fashion factories also don't care shit about nature and waste chemicals are sometime just pumped out into the sea affecting people and animals living nearby negatively. Fake furs also shed plastic and that's not something we want to end up in nature as many toxins easily accumulate on top of plastics.

Mink fur is extremely warm. A long coat made of mink fur would insulate better than a down coat. It's not just a status symbol but a way to stay warm against the elements. Higher quality is always more expensive. Mink oil is also popular to sustain leather products like saddlery and boots!

Bottom line there is no golden solution when it comes to fur. At the end of the day there is major issues of pollution, politics, and quality on both sides of the argument. I am a huge lover of fur but find buying new fur is not the way to go given how a lot of it is poorly made and not really long wearing. As it is mass produced for profit. I find best luck in buying vintage fur. The quality is better and the price is decent. Also though it just comes to your own preferences, and we have to remember that preferring real over fake doesn't make you a bad person and liking faux over real doesn't instantly get you a good person award. We all just have to buy with our eyes wide open and try to make effort to buy the best and least harmful product on both ends of the argument.

Crude oil, gas and coals just to name a few, the most polluting materials to start off with and it’s the most polluting materials to be used for clothing. It has significant impact on marine lives and its ecosystems. And faux fur are NOT warm at all. Sure I own fur clothing and accessories as there’s nothing else that would keep warmer than fur in winter in below 0 temperatures. You eat meat, just the other day I saw rabbits sold in a supermarket for making stews soups etc. But you don’t use fur for rabbits?? Absolutely ridiculous. You eat beef but you’re against fur. How’s McDonald’s is ok but not fur coats? I also know animals of fur farming are not abused. You simply can’t obtain excellent quality fur from poor health animals.

An interesting fact is often the meats from fur making go to places to become things like feed for carnivous animals but many make them into fertilizer which is used for many things. Many places do full or as close to full circle as possible. Of course there are unscrupulous places but there are places with things set up for that exact issue :). And yea thats the sad thing about leather is that cows take A LOT of resources :( and leather while protective and warm to a point isn't as warm as furs because of the cellular structure of skin vs fur etc.

There is nothing wrong with fur as long as the animals are treated as humanely as possible, and also they are not hunted to extinction. It's so hypocritical to say that you eat meat but you have a problem with using an animal for its fur. Animal righs activists really need to take a chill pill. Animals die all the time in the wild, whether it's due to illnesses, old age or predators, so there's nothing wrong with using it as a resource. A real fur coat, when taken care of, can last for decades, unlike its synthetic counterparts. Real fur is biodegradable whereas fake fur, which are usually made of plastics, would shed microplastics. Many researches have shown plastic is horrible for the environment and horrible for our health, yet these animal rights activists are promoting plastic

I'm torn on this. I love natural fiber, both plant based and animal based. I once bought faux leather boots, they were done after one winter of mild wear, while the leather top boots that I have taken no care of have lasted more than six years of serious abuse and then it was not the leather that failed but the glue that held the sole. And that could have been fixed, if the boots themselves still fit me, which they sadly don't. Now, shoes and boots are a necessity, not a luxury as fur coats are. Personally, I will always go for real leather boots (every 6-12 years when a pair fails.. here's to hoping my new ones make it to more than 15!) but I honestly don't see a strong case for luxury fur and leather products.

*selfish materialistic people that destroyed the planet. -fixed it for you... those "elegant" people would go out hunting animals for trophy, destroying rainforest to get the best tropical wood and buy endangered animal to showoff to their friends. Thank god those "elegant" people are no more but the damage they did still last.

You literally couldn’t pay me to wear fur. If need to keep warm, I reach for Arc’treyx. Fur is trash, leave animals be and get performance gear.

it is natural to use animals and to be grateful for the animal, but what is today the situation is unacceptable and makes me feel disgusting for buying cheap sable brushes. i will at least use them fiercely now, so the animal has not died in vain. though, as far as i know no animal is killed directly for a sable brush, they are biproducts which wouldve otherwise have been thrown away. the debate is not a dead set one, but it is clear that radical changes are needed. in my opinion, humans can hunt animals; but animal industries are unsustainable and cruel to both animals and workers.
