Macadamia nuts are not that cheap in Australia. It's common to find the nuts selling for AU$25-$50/kg in most supermarkets. It's only a few rural areas where you can buy macadamias (in the shell) on the side of the road for AU$5-$10 per bag - up to 2kg per bag.

I woke up from a nap om my flight home yesterday. The old woman sitting next to me had a napkin on her table with nuts on it. I asked if they were macadamia because I love those. She said "yes they are" and told me I could have them. After eating most of the macadamia nuts she turned to me and said: "those are my favorite but ever since I lost my teeth I can only suck the chocolate off of them".

Uh, that was a very short video. So how does something go from $1.10/lb end up retailing for $25/lb? That's an enormously huge gap that someone needs to explain to us. Sounds to me like global price fixing. I'd appreciate it if you would drill down and do some further investigation into this mystery. It kind of reminds me about the story of butter. For man years, margarine came out as an alternative to the often vilified butter for its rich fatty content. Then lo and behold, butter turned out to actually be good for you. And then, of course, margarine studies all suggested this was crap. The results: butter prices soared overnight, never to dropdown again.

When i was a kid, my neighbour had a few macadamia trees in their front yard and welcomed all the kids on our street to pick and have as many as we want. As a child growing up around Rockhampton I used to eat allot of macadamias, mangos and passion fruit. It was all free and for the most part people usually just trip over such things or mow over. If you wait till macadamias fall off good chance they are ripe...

It wasn't the British colonists who renamed the nut, it was a German-Australian physician named Ferdinand von Mueller, who named it after a friend of his (i. e. Scottish chemist John Macadam).

Harold Flowers the most enjoyed nut comes on December 1st, therefore making it the most priceless. A nut in November is the cheapest because it is only for people who have failed, enjoying it while being dissatisfied with themselves at the same time, having *laid* down their arms. With the size of the “load” that comes on December 1st being largest in quantity, you get more *bang* for your buck.

If the tree thrives in tropical places such as Hawaii, Australia, and Latin America, then technically, it'd thrive in Indonesia, which has quite similar environmental traits, would it?

I live in Australia where most of the country's macadamia nuts are grown. The Macadamia nuts grown on my neighbours farm get processed, roasted and salted or honey added. They are mostly sent to American restaurants with the end user around $100 per KG in USD. I find this hilarious considering I can get the same bags from the processing facility for only $27 AUD. The damand in Australia however is a lot lower than the demand overseas.

I grew up with several mac nut trees in my backyard and we never harvested off the tree. My grandma would rake them off the ground into a bucket. They are sooooooooooooo much work! There is an outter husk that needs to be removed and then a hard outter shell that also needs to be removed. I remember my great grandma spending hours a day dehusking and cracking to get only a few pounds.

People in my village were starting to get good money from their macadamia trees. But local cartel has colluded with Kenyan government officials and kicked out the Chinese who were buying a kilo at decent amount. Now we are back to selling at throwaway prices to MACADAMIA PEOPLE who turn around and export at 100x the price.
