Hey there Leigh and Steph, I have been following you since the early days and love your videos, thank you. As a 65 yr old 7x Land Rover owner from NZ I can vouch for BFG either MGs or ATs with my second choice being Coopers. If you can visit Almaty the old capital, its more interesting than Astana - Nur Sultan. It is close to ski fields, hiking trails etc but at the bottom of KZ. I was married in Karagnada many years ago and have been to KZ 3x now - love it. Good luck with the diffs, remember the UK name Ashcroft Transmissions - the best in the business.
@kevinmoss9705 жыл бұрын
A cheap top tip would be to get magnetic drain plugs and check them for excessive build up of metallic particles now and again.It is a Landy after all. It wont prevent anything breaking but at least you might get a warning before somesthing catastrophic happens differential wise. Standard Landy diffs are pretty weak to be fair, they never really changed the design much from the '50's. On the plus side, theres plenty of aftermarket options that are way stronger but expensive. Good luck on your future travels. Loving the content.

You have the weak single pin (often mistakenly called "2 pin") diff installed. For a heavy vehicle like yours the two pin (often calĺed "4 pin" - yes it's confusing) diff is essential. Probably the cheapest upgrade is the Ashcroft limited slip diff which has the strong core and will give extra traction when you need it. You can buy strong diffs from KAM but they are expensive. LR made their own 2 pin / 4 planet gear diffs which weren't fitted as as standard and are quite rare. If you find one then buy it.

Defender mods and travels or a trutrac.
@defendermodsandtravels5 жыл бұрын
@@matthewjackson6123 I am on travels of my own and can''t get online to check this out so I must rely on my memory here. Isn't the Trutrak an automatic locking diff? If so general advice is that it's fine to fit to the rear of a long Defender (110 or 130) but never fit to the front axle because it makes steering unpredictable. My ex-military Defender had a 2 pin (4 planet gear) diff at the rear which I put in the front and it has a new Ashcroft LSD at the rear (pegged too). This caters for most conditions except really heavy off roading which I avoid. This would be an ideal set up for GrizzlynBear also.
@matthewjackson61235 жыл бұрын
Defender mods and travels limited slip. I run a Detroit locker in the rear (Salisbury) and a trutrac (front rover type) Ashcroft HD inner shafts and HD drive flanges in my Perentie 110. Trutracs in both ends are ideal for these guys because they are driving on ice. The locker can be difficult and potentially dangerous. The trutracs aren’t as nearly as aggressive. It eliminates the two pin rover type diff. The Salisbury is very strong. I live a in a dry climate and the locker was my choice for the rear.

Hello Steph & Lee - I'm building out a FWC Eagle shell and have been paying close attention to your channel for ideas. A couple, in particular, I've been happy to see you've tried as I'm thinking of doing the same but haven't seen done anywhere else quite like you've done: 1. Mounting diesel heater to the exterior/underside of your FWC wood base. How's that working so far? 2. Soft top insulation: Was contemplating purchasing FWC's offering for this, but it looks like the Blidimax might be a step up as far as ability to insulate for sound and heat/cold. Question though: are you able to bring your top down while it's still on or do you have to take it off to lower your roof? How long does it take to put up/take down if you do? Thanks! Have to say, you two are truly inspirational. Love Love Loving your journey. Cheers and Best Wishes!
