Definitely use the swaying. I have had it work in low 8 mph winds, but is really effective in 10-12 mph winds. Do not fall for the head bob. While I do think they are locating or spatially observing the object giving them a fear factor, I do believe they trying to entice the predator to reveal itself, so don’t give up and move. I have had dear move away and comeback out of curiosity if I have the wind advantage.

I just had a stare-down with a mature doe this morning on a hunt. It really is crazy how long they take to stare and figure us out. I managed to stay patient, and she calmed down and started walking, broad side to me. When she stopped to get one more look at me, I already had my cross hairs right where I wanted to shoot. Only took one shot; it was good and ethical, so she didn't make it far.

I archery hunt with a crossbow and I have found if you move like molasses you can bring your bow up and get a shot off even when the deer is staring you down. Maybe combine this technique with swaying. Also, I hang a camo net up behind me so there is a screen to break up my outline and help disguise my movements.

Another tip I don't see mentioned very often is to avoid releasing if the deer has their head down. They always drop in order to load their muscles before they jump away. When they have their head down they can drop so much faster and deeper due to the leverage effect of raising their head while dropping their body to jump away. The shot shown could have gone completely over the back if the deer had its head down when the arrow was released. They are impressive animals for sure.
@WeekendWoodsmenАй бұрын

@@WeekendWoodsmen What broadheads will you be using this year What broadheads would you be using this year?
@WeekendWoodsmenАй бұрын
I personally like the G5 Dead Meat 3 blade 1.5" cut. They fly fairly true to field point accurate and don't loose a lot of momentum when impacting and opening on a deer. If you are ever shooting broad heads, especially fix blade, you need to sacrifice one to shoot to ensure it flies true. Many times small tuning adjustments are needed with your bow to get broadheads to impact close to where you field points hit. The G5s come with a ballistic match practice point (at least last time I got them).
@theguyinmaine12 күн бұрын
If you think about the speed of sound minus the speed of the arrow it is milliseconds if they are close. What they see is what makes them drop. Seeing is real time. They see the bow release and then the arrow coming. Even if they aren't looking at you, they see 310 degrees and they see clearly in panoramic, not focusing on a small spot like us.

@WeekendWoodsmenАй бұрын
They drop either way so if you are aware of the situation you can make it a much higher percentage shot. Definitely wouldn’t want to take a long shot at a high alert deer
@stevecolombe4446Ай бұрын
Honestly I would not take a shot at a deer that is on high alert like that. They are definitely going to jump and too many things can go wrong with the shot. I just freeze and wait patiently. The deer will stomp and snort and usually walk back and forth to get a better look at you and try to get downwind. By waiting either the deer will calm down and go about it's business or wind you and bolt to live another day. I had never heard of swaying before I will have to try that sometime

I got busted by a doe with 2 fawns tonight. What’s the fawns chance of survival without mom?
@WeekendWoodsmenАй бұрын
Really depends on how long the fawn has been alive in my opinion. If it was born early/normal time it is probably fairly high otherwise they wouldn't allow hunting to occur...right? But if it was born late and hasn't had much time to learn the survival skills and still needs moms milk, etc. to prepare for winter, feed, etc. then it's possibly in bad shape. Even late fawns have developed the ability to hide and understand trouble so for me it's usually about the ability to feed and understand preparing and surviving cold weather.

you are going to wound A LOT of deer if you are shooting at high alert deer, it just a fact when you choose to take crappy shots at deer.
@WeekendWoodsmenАй бұрын
Deer will drop no matter what. A deer with its head down and relaxed is actually proven to drop even more than a deer on alert with its head up due to the lever effect.
@yourmomma2995Ай бұрын
@@WeekendWoodsmen that is NOT true, a relaxed deer does not move more than an alert deer. i think you know this fact, but i learned many years ago to never take a shot an alerted deer, you might get lucky once in a while but you will lose more than you will retrieve, they usually drop and turn in one motion, even with a 400fps plus crossbow the alert deer will usually move before your arrow gets to the deer, leading to wounded deer which i cant stomach.
@WeekendWoodsmenАй бұрын
@@yourmomma2995 sorry but you are reciting one of the most common myths in deer hunting. It is proven that a deer with their head down is capable of dropping as a MUCH faster rate than a deer with its head up. So it is always best to shoot when the head is up if you can. Don’t take our word for it, Growing Deer TV talks about this ALL the time. Check out minute 2 in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKC1dKWkoc9jj9Usi=uGOl1taMhdJS0X5L
@yourmomma2995Ай бұрын
@@WeekendWoodsmen i do know that a deer with its head down can drop faster than a deer with its head up, but you were talking about ALERT deer moving faster than non alerted deer, which is totally false. EVERY ONE knows not to take a shot at alert deer that are ready to bolt. i have shot 100's of deer with a bow over the last 45 years, and alert deer are a problem. non spooked/alerted deer are not.
@WeekendWoodsmenАй бұрын
And I think that's where there is some misalignment. If we are aligned that non alert (head down) deer move faster than head up deer. I tend to categorize them into head up and head down, and within head up there is alerted and non-alerted. Not sure if you consider "bleating" at a deer to stop them an "alerted deer", but either way the mechanics are pretty much the same. In order to move, the first thing the deer has to do is "load" their legs by bending them, this is the dropping motion that occurs. There's only so much time for this to occur and the arrow under normal shot distances (30 yards and under) arrives before the deer can finish loading their legs and actually move. When the deer is head down loading process can move the vitals much faster (we agreed on this) than the head up loading process, so whether a deer is alerted or not with their head up, then the vitals are going to move less than or equal to a deer with its head down, because they have the exact same amount of time to load their legs before they can change direction or bound off. Therefore, when I said "The deer is going to get a head start on dropping because she can see the shot" is still in relation to a "head up" deer. So an alerted head up deer looking directly at you is going to drop more than an alerted head up deer not looking directly at you because she will be focused on you and light travels faster than sound, giving the visual a jump start, but because she is head up, they will still have less ability to move their vitals than a head down deer over the same distance. Therefore, a head down non-alert deer is going to have the ability to move their vitals MORE than both a head up alerted and a head up non-alerted deer because it is all a matter of time to impact over a certain distance, and there is only so much time to load their legs. This is where keeping your shots to an ethical distance is critical. Either way, you have to know what you are dealing with and I think head down deer and a highly alert deer looking directly at you can both be problematic if you don't anticipate the drop appropriately and are shooting beyond 20 yards, and definitely would not want to attempt a longer shot unless it was head up and non-alert.
@jonathantheunacceptable4259Ай бұрын
Great video but I find it a bit unethical to shoot a doe with her fawn. Doesn't give the young deer as much of a chance
@WeekendWoodsmenАй бұрын
By the time season comes in fawns are fully able to be on their own. In this case this was post rut when the doe had already chased her fawn off to fend for itself while getting bred, so there is no harm in killing a doe with a fawn. They are with fawns all season long, so if you went by that standard no does would ever be able to get killed which is really bad for the herd.
@jonathantheunacceptable4259Ай бұрын
@@WeekendWoodsmen it's actually a law where I hunt, you also can't take them in the water wading or swimming either and need an antlerless deer tag to take a doe from the get go
@WeekendWoodsmenАй бұрын
They must have their reasons. Our state (Ohio) sells early season doe tags at a discounted rate that are ONLY good for the first half of the season. So our state actually encourages killing does early. It logically makes sense too in places where you have high doe to buck ratios because you want to kill the does before rut so the bucks don’t get so run down trying to breed them all.

You'd be surprised with how much movement you can get away with as long as it's slow and smooth. If I know I'm caught, I'll just draw back really slowly and take the shot.
