I like this number, but I think the costumer missed a trick with Dove Cameron here. She looks so scrawny and flat. And no, I'm not trying to say anything negative about her body, this is a costume issue as she looks lovely in pretty much everything else. The costume did not show her off to good effect. Part of it is that Melissa is Amazonian compared to the other two. She's just a big girl (tall, broad shouldered). And apparently Dove is tiny. But part of it is the cut of the costume. The other two ladies have kind of wings off of their bra cups, and Dove has a flat strip that makes her look flatter. Additionally the other two have more conservatively cut bottoms while Dove's are cut in the kind of 1980's thigh high look, which is supposed to make your legs look longer. The problem with this is it makes your actual torso look smaller, which is not the best when you're a little twig of a thing. Whoever they brought in for costume design on this did great with the other two ladies, but it's like they didn't know how to dress someone who was thin and petite.
@jenblack98 Жыл бұрын
I wonder though if this was kind of the point. Dove Cameron's character is a "Parody" of Sally bowles from Cabaret and flapper dancers from the '20s and '30s. having a flat chest and somewhat of a "boyish" figure was very much in and trendy and it would look quite out of character for her to go from clothes that fit more with that style to something that emphasises her chest.
@jenniferhanses Жыл бұрын
@@jenblack98 That would be an interesting take, but it doesn't follow through. I mean, they were doing gender queer stuff with the Emcee earlier, but here she's very clearly feminine to go with the Andrews Sisters kind of vibe of the song. They didn't put her in pants or give her shoulder pads to make her more masculine or gender non-conforming. In fact her feminine form is highlighted. And there's also always the problem of making one of your female leads look like there's something wrong with her when there's not supposed to be. The two other ladies are rather zaftig in their outfits. You can't make Dove put on weight for one number, but emphasizing how much of a tiny twig she is is going the wrong direction in that company. I mean, you could maybe have done something to fix the problem a little bit by lining them up by height, but they didn't want to do that because Cecily was supposed to be becoming a star, so she needs the middle slot. And that still doesn't fix the whole thing, it's just what should have been done except for plot. Which means you're left with costuming (and maybe makeup, but I know far less about makeup and didn't spot any obvious flaws with that.).
