With Varuna in the boatyard waiting for her bowsprit replacement, we have been out all over California with Ty working, but it’s finally time to say goodbye to the working world and head back to the coast.
On our way back, we happen across Buttonwillow airport and some guys out there flying some pretty awesome remote control aircraft, doing all sorts of acrobatics and aerial tricks. We also get in some awesome footage of some of California’s iconic fields of produce in the rich agricultural region of the Central Valley.
Once we get back to the boatyard, it’s time to see how the repair progress is coming along. They have the new stainless bowsprit all made up, getting it’s final welds and fitting on the deck to work with our anchor system. It’s been a slow process, but they’ve been doing an outstanding job!

We are planning to give back along our journey and spend time sharing stories, sweat labor and needed supplies along the way in the off beaten path towns that can often be forgotten. We have not mentioned too much of our purpose in our videos at this time since we want to be doing before we talk about it.

You are playing where I lived for 25 years. We SCUBA dived on boats in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, and I sailed and took my PWC out on the ocean many many times. Ventura Harbor was both our ocean launch point, and go to place for weekend days to poke around the harbor and shops. We've moved away now and I really miss the ocean. The bow sprit looks like it is going to outlast the boat. The little RC jets were very cool.

Where are you now, you sure did live in a very nice playground. The RC jets were quite an amazing find in the middle of that hot land. The bow sprit will outlast us all.

We live in Redding, CA now. It's a 3 hour drive to the coast and the coast in this area is no where as inviting as the Channel Islands area. We are happy with a 21' Yamaha twin jet SX210 boat on local lakes now. Back in 1974 I planned a sailing cruise on a 51' Wharram that my friend built. We went so far as to having learned how to plot with a sextant, took first aid courses, roughly planned our course, and did a fair amount of local (SF Bay) sailing. I was into sailing from 1965-2008. Back in the 70;s there was no GPS, no chart plotters, no Sat phones, the term "weather window" was not used, most jibs were hank on, forget having an electric windlass, forget having a water maker or solar cells. We had a depth sounder and Loran-C for navigation. The trip was cancelled when my friend divorced and his wife got the boat in the divorce. By that time I had the urge to see the world and moved to Paris France for three years. I'm 70 now and don't think I could tolerate the boat motion (that I love so much) any more. I've had bouts with vertigo. But the call to the sea is still there. I spent about 16 months at sea on two U.S. Navy ships and the sea got in my blood. Back then I read every cruising book I could find, perhaps 100 of them. I was thrilled to discover videos like yours on youtube. I've watched a few hundred over the past several months. SV Delos is my favorite. I wish you fair winds and following seas. I have subscribed and will follow your travels. My favorite videos are those at sea. I usually fast forward through most of the land segments. To me it's all about the wind, waves, and boat motion.

John thank you for watching, we will be bringing you back to sea with us shortly as we have been land bound for too long. Thank you for your service in the Navy and your dedication to the sea itself, it is amazing how technology has changed sailing and made it much more achievable for the average person these days. Of course pay due respects to mother nature and understanding her power will never give way to technology. We also love Delos, they are one of our favourites and we follow them on patreon. Fair winds to you sir.

The new bowsprit is looking solid. I am interested in how it will respond when you get into heavy seas. Sounds like the boat has a thick deck, likely due to the planned install of the anchor winch. This is helpful in managing the stress from sailing. Hope you return to the sea soon, your getting to accustomed to solid ground. ;>)

Handles well, we have not noticed any real change. The weight is mostly the same as before as the size is slightly smaller than the previous. We gave it a great shake down in 30 knots around Santa Cruz Island for the last week.

I'm a big Tommy's burgers fan.Chili cheese burgers and tamales. I'm not badmouthing In and out. The Snyder In And Out family has been a great supporter of car racing and still is. It may not be the racing that I have been involved in in many years. I still see the grand daughter and owner a few times a year as like her father she is a racer . People call her the Burger Queen. I used to eat at the same restaurant at an airport that her father ate at very often and spoke with him often. Maybe I am just jaded since there are a few in and outs within ten minutes of my house. I hope you two are on your way soon.

That certainly looks like a hefty piece of steel, any idea what it weighs? Did you consider adding a strut under the platform to the bow near the waterline to help support the weight?
@AdventureAdriftSailing
@AdventureAdriftSailing 8 жыл бұрын
I can't be sure of the weight, 60-70 pounds I think. It is almost identical in weight to the previous one, the UMHD helps reduce the weight and add strength. We did look at adding a strut and it was on the original plan, after we reduced the length and added more through bolts on the deck we decided it was not needed.

What did they use to fill the gap between the SS plate and the fiberglass deck? Polyethylene filler? That's interesting. I thought that was pretty easy to drill through though. I was wondering how they were going to seal that up since the vertical windlass had to penetrate through both of the layers and on through below the deck level. It looked like a bugger to get sealed up. again. Hopefully the filler they used will keep the moisture out of the windlass motor. That's a serious piece of stainless steel gear they built for you. A nice solid anchorsprit for a couple of thousand in out of pocket I should say. I'm jelly. I'll be building something out of wood probably this winter for Barry Duckworth. I'll avoid the method they used on Varuna's original version though.
@AdventureAdriftSailing
@AdventureAdriftSailing 8 жыл бұрын
You would do well to avoid the way our previous was, the filler was UMHW and is a super beast. They spent a good 2-3 days solid to get through using holesaw to place the windlass.

The problem for California water is exactly what you said. Dams and aquducts were last built in the 1950's &60's. That is the reason for the great farms that Cal. has. But through the 70's to now government has done nothing to store more water. When I drove truck through the Central Valley, farmers knew of the water issues. That was in the early 90's. They have been battling the government, who has been cutting their supply of water. This has resulted in farmers using wells, but the drought has and the farmers trying to keep their family farms working has dried those up. The increase population also has had an affect. But let's go back to my first comment. No dams or aquaducts have been built since the 50's & 60's. Plus more water is being release from the dams and aquaducts into the ocean. The problem we face is the government as far as our water supply. To much is being release into the ocean and not enough is being stored for a extra supply. The drought has only shown the mismanagement of our water system to those who have been paying attention. I know that many ochards have been bulldozed, because they have dried up. If you have ever grown any trees that produce, you know how many years it takes to get any production out of the trees. It is a huge investment. Sorry but that touched a nerve...it is unfortunate that young people have not witness what has happen in Cali and the affects it has had on the farmers, their workers and the price of produce.
@AdventureAdriftSailing
@AdventureAdriftSailing 8 жыл бұрын
Very sad state of affairs indeed, you say they have been releasing fresh water into the ocean ? Was this during a time with abundance and they had not built adequate storage? Sometimes we look at the amazing accomplishments that America has, the interstate road system is an amazing project. Somewhere along the line it looks like the general upkeep and future planning for these though has been forgotten. The farms and orchards are critical, hopefully someone does something to help.

The repair looks awesome. But, I guess I don't understand how boat insurance works. For example....If the front bumper of my car fell off, I wouldn't be able to make a claim with my insurance company. What am I missing?
@kevinp100
@kevinp100 8 жыл бұрын
GeorgeGraves if your front bumper falls off and it gets scratched, you can make a claim with your insurance. This is why we pay into insurance. Please remember this for future reference
@GeorgeGraves
@GeorgeGraves 8 жыл бұрын
What you're describing is a warranty. Now, if someone had hit you, and the bumper fell off and got scratched, yes, I could see insurance picking up the bill. But if your 10-15 year old car is parked, and the bumper falls off....that's not the responsibility of the insurer. That's on you. So for your future reference, I would say that insurance is not the same as a warranty. ;) So I'm still confused. (it's awesome they are covering it, I just don't get why)
