I used to have White German Shepherds (4). I fed them kibble, thought I bought the best there was. They all died way too early, when they were 7, 8, 8 and 11 years old of Heart failure, cancer & brain tumor, cancer and heart failure again. 12 1/2 years ago I changed to raw meat diet. They get any kind of meat, eggs, organ meats, sardines, a little bit of dairy products without sugars. I used to feed them lamb necks, turkey necks but after my old boy cracked a molar and it had to be removed by the vet, I substitute bones with bone powder (one company I found just made for dogs), and ground egg shells. Sometimes when I have home made Sauerkraut they get a bit of that too, they like it. They don't need any other veggies. My now 14.5 year old mixed GSD boy is the oldest dog we ever had. He still has some health issues, and he had knee surgery in both legs, as well as starting to have seizures when we was 11 but, with supplements he's been now seizure free since March 2023. He's still going for walks every day, He's still jumping in and out of the Van, up on the couch, he's active in the backyard. I think feeding the right food helped him get this far. I will never feed any of my dogs kibble again. I also only use dried duck meat and dried sardines as treats or liver treats. Only single ingredient.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I wonder if the seizer is due to annual vaccination? Do you vaccinate your GSD? Regarding the bone issue, I would suggest grounding the meats manually, if possible, to get the bones (calcium) mixed with meat and feeding it that way. I grind the chicken myself and feed my dogs with bones, skins and organs all in there.

@@SaroDogTraining Yes, my dogs are vaccinated but I will not let my old boy get any more. It's the law here you have to have at least Rabbies vaccination for you dog. I'm' not happy about it. Unfortunately my dogs are sensitive to chicken. They get diarrhea from it every time. I'm just glad they can tolerate boiled eggs and the ground egg shells. The beef bone powder is a good substitute and less messy. Oh, they do get chicken hearts sometimes but it's the same reaction as with the chicken meat/skin. I think they got the sensitivity because the first two years of feeding them raw meat I only gave them chicken and turkey meat skin and bones etc and didn't mix it up so they got sensitive to it. They were fine in the beginning.

Dogs would not react to food in raw format. Do you cook the chicken?
@Moni-ui5bz3 ай бұрын
@@SaroDogTraining Well, apparently mine do. I do not cook any of the meat I feed my dogs.
@SaroDogTraining3 ай бұрын
Based on my info, the meat ( the protein) of the chicken should not and could not cause any allergies. The dog's body are reacting to them as allergy reaction either to the tuff that is added with the chicken meal or the chicken meat is processed or not a good quality.

I'm so happy to see this video. Thank you for spreading this information! I used to feed my dog raw, but now that he's a senior he gets mostly cooked because it's easier on an older dog's digestion. Another problem with kibble is when they drink enough water to get the hydration they need, the food swells as it absorbs the water. Not good. Kibble's so high in carbs, which as you pointed out converts to sugar, which causes inflammation in the body. I gently cook his veggies, because dogs need the cell walls of the plants to break down a bit so they can absorb the nutrients. Again, thank you for this video! I'm also a fan of Dr Becker's.

It’s great to hear from someone who understands the importance of feeding a healthy diet to dogs! Thank you for sharing the tips as well.

@@SaroDogTraining Same, and you have this video! Even if people feel like they can't go raw or home cooked, due to time or money constraints, there are still so many inexpensive easy things they can do to improve their dog's diets. Dr Becker was asked what is the one thing people can do that's would give the most benefit and she said to give them a can of unsalted sardines twice a week, preferably packed in water, but really some olive oil is good for them, and you can always drain them on paper towels so they don't get too much if you can't find packed in water. People can also feed a little less kibble and top it with a tablespoon or so (depending on the size of the dog) of lean ground turkey, beef, or chicken. Even if only a few times a week, it'll help. Add a spoonful of gently steamed veggies (no onions) here and there, some berries for treats (blackberries, as you mentioned, blueberries, raspberries, pitted cherries), and in my experience all of my dogs love melons of all sorts. Even with only a little effort, we can improve our dogs' diets, and most importantly, health! I was just chatting with someone who has the same breed dog as I do, a scarce breed (Carolina dog, aka American dingo) that are medium size - 55 to 65 lbs, so a larger dog. She's been feeding hers raw, and gently cooked when they got older, and a varied diet. Her last dog lived until she was 18! Very unusual for a dog this size. Makes me hopeful about my senior.

I agree. Just removing 25% of the kibble and replacing it with fresh food can make a big difference. I would love to get my dogs live long, healthy lives and that is my goal as well. To get my dogs live longer and up to 20 years or so. Thank you for sharing these information. They are very valuable.

@@SaroDogTraining I think that's what every dog owner wants, for their dogs to live long and healthy lives. Who wouldn't if they love their dogs? But unfortunately we've been conditioned for many decades to believe all we have to do is buy bags of kibble, labelled "dog food," pour it into their dishes day after day, and that's it. Dogs are both hunters and scavengers. They require a variety of foods, primarily protein. I once asked one of my former vets if he knew a human who ate only packaged and/or canned food, if he thought they lived on a healthy diet. He was quiet for a moment, and then softly said "No." He was a kind man, and sincerely loved animals and his clients, but it was clear to me he'd never thought about that before. Not his fault, vets are taught very little about nutrition when they're in vet schools. It's getting better, thankfully, but still isn't good.

My pleasure! What do you feed your dog(s)?

Went and finished this video it’s excellent. I’m not sure everybody’s gonna understand it but I know all about the cool and warm types of dogs and what they should eat and also I did some research on types of protein and because my dogs border collies come from England or Scotland or Australia. They probably ate lamb, it’s very unique about the origin and types of food. Our dogs should be eating. Thanks for your information.

You are very welcome. I am glad you enjoyed it but I tried to simplify the explanation and I am hoping if dog owners want to learn more, they can do their own research.

How often would you raw feed a 70 pound dog (mixed breed, lab, husky, cattle, pit bull). He’s a rescue. Also, have you a video on what to do for the first month or so when you bring home a rescue, especially if they have suffered some. I love all you do to inform us. Thank you. Mrs. H

As long as you are feeding 700 daily intake food to your dog in two parts (twice a day), it should be fine. I have a video about when you bring home a rescue dog. Watch this and let me know if you have questions. kzbin.info/www/bejne/opTMeqCIe9yEna8si=m2wAu5zOskUglACD

Also, I’m not done with it, but were you watching the Dr. Billinghurst podcast? I figured out with my dog who is very active and 35 pounds that he should be getting 7% of his body weight a day and heats a raw food so I was thinking 2.45 pounds of food a day. What are your thoughts on that? Do you listen to Dr. Billinghurst?
@SaroDogTraining2 ай бұрын
No, I didn't know about him. I will spend some time to learn about him. Another tool in our, dog owner's, tool box when it comes to health and diet of the dogs. I know the formula which works the best and is the easiest to remember which you figure out the ideal weight of the dog, let's say 50 Lbs. 50x100=500 grams becomes the amount of the daily intake of the dog. 75% meat, 25% veggies.
