My dogs name is Scout. He is very good with basic commands. He is very aggressive toward other dogs, people he doesn't know. He is a rescue so I definitely missed the 10 week to 4 month opportunity. He was abused and I took him away from that, however, I am hoping there is still time that I can help him with this. He is petrified of stairs as well. Can you help me Saro?

I can help but I can't perform miracles. Because we are dealing with trauma and learned behaviour that an abused dog learns and gets used to it when it is practiced for a long time. It takes a long time to undo it and takes a lot of work on your part. I am willing to learn more about you and your dog to see if I can help you with my program. So, feel free to book a free video call with me to go over the details. link.overdogdigital.com/widget/bookings/dcws

Training should be fun for them. I understand what you're offering, but won't they see training as a punishment after a while with this method?
@SaroDogTraining
@SaroDogTraining 9 күн бұрын
Remember, you are not approaching it with punishment in mind. You are approaching it as a way to update your dog's training skills because if you have had a good connection with your dog, you wouldn't need to re-train your dog. You would just say "stop it" and your dog would stop the barking for instance. But because you are not at that level yet, you need to re-train it. Training never stops. It only gets better and easier. Your dog sees this of another opportunity to interact with you.

So what if I were an owner using treats with my 10month old beagle for the last 4months (ever since I got him) will it be hard to switch to a praise based method of training?..and what if I can get him to do most things without treats being involved?.. will it be frustrating for him to switch methods this deep into training?
@SaroDogTraining
@SaroDogTraining 10 күн бұрын
Great questions. One of the greatest things about dogs is that they are very adaptable.They go with what is provided. If you provide treats to train, they will adjust to treats, if you provide play and praise they will adjust and respond to play and praise. It is the human that reinforces the approach and is the human that is the hardest and the frustrating part of understanding this concept. Your beagle was made to please you and learn from you whether with treats or play or praise. You choose. The hard part is training the dog owner and not the dog. To learn more watch the following video and if you have more questions or help feel free to ask. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ammkqaeQj6dld5osi=4UsmbGlOJ0-I0oXS

When you wondered if the dog will perform the action *without* the treats, I began to understand the difference between the dog just doing (for food) and the dog actually learning. I notice in my own beagle that she will readily lie down for a treat but doesn't seem to understand my command without it. Very interesting!
@SaroDogTraining
@SaroDogTraining 10 күн бұрын
Great observation. That's the whole point, to make sure your dog understands the command rather than just associating it with a treat. That's why treats are not the right tool to teach or train a dog because it overrides everything else.

My Beagle hound Festus, will carrie his toy to the outside door and to yard gate and makes me play fetch with him. He keeps me active with training me. 🤣 I've learned his ways of communicating. For example, if he comes with a loud bark, he needs to go out for personal business. If he brings the toy to the outside door, he needs to burn energy. Through my online program, I’m able to deliver a more impactful experience that empowers owners to become confident leaders for their dogs. In fact, some local clients don’t see the same results, as they often rely too much on my in-person guidance instead of building their own skills. My online program shifts the focus, helping dog owners build lasting results by fostering self-reliance and effective training techniques they can apply daily. @SaroDogTraining
@SaroDogTraining 25 күн бұрын
first and foremost, If you have an out of control dog, you need to calm it down using a different approach. This method is used for dogs who are misbehaving and you need to stop that repeated unwanted behaviour. Also, no technique will solve any behaviour or an out of control behaviour in one take. You need to have a dog who is semi-trained with basic obedience and also you need to repeat this method few times until the dog learns. Don't be lazy. Do the work instead of looking for a magic pill.

I don't want her to do that.. so I have an area in the backyard with a little fence .I want her to go back there..I got her to go for a couple of weeks than it rained last week and she wouldn't go proably because it's more of a mud surface with no grass. I got her to go this morning.. but it's night time now and she wouldn't go but soon as we were back in the usual part of the yard where it's grassy she went...what can I do to train her to go in the area I want her to go in? Rain,sleet.snon,day,night? Lol

One of the first tips that I have is to not limit yourself to where your dog can go or not go. It is very stressful for you which is not worth it. The pee is actually good for the yard and the soil if it is not very acidic. You can improve the pee quality with a good diet. Next, you want to take your dog on leash to where you want it to do its business for the first week. Be consistent and stick to the routine that I have explained in the video. Hope this helps.

One of the biggest mistakes that dog owners make, in my opinion. They either use treats which they use it at the wrong time with the wrong mindset or they use aversive tools or methods. They just can't get it right because they can't figure out the core issue and how to fix it. I am so glad that you have changed your view and approach.

I totally get how exhausting and frustrating this must be for you. It sounds like your dog has a ton of pent-up energy and excitement, and it’s really overwhelming for both of you. One approach is to focus on building calm behavior before even picking up the leash. Right now, your dog associates the leash and harness with a huge burst of excitement, and it’s become a big trigger. Here are a few steps that might help: Desensitization to the Leash and Harness: Try picking up the leash and harness when you’re not actually planning on going out. Just pick them up, let your dog see them, and then put them away without going outside. Repeat this a few times each day. This can help reduce the level of excitement over time, as he learns that leash and harness don’t always mean a walk. Practice Calm Indoors First: Before going outside, practice calm behavior on the leash indoors, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Walk around slowly and stop frequently. Reward him for calm behavior (this could be with praise, or petting-whatever he responds best to). Try to keep your energy calm and patient as well; dogs often mirror our energy. Redirect the Energy: High-energy dogs often need a structured way to release their energy before they can focus on training. Try games, or even quick training sessions to burn off some energy before the leash comes out. If you’re still struggling, don’t hesitate to reach out. For more info watch this workshop: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2qviYl6ntiroMksi=xlzkbtSQp4iDsF-C

@5:22 "Just because you're going to the dog park doesn't mean all the dogs there are well behaved, well trained and calm." This is important to consider before entering. I adopted a shelter dog, and we need a safe, outdoor place to gather, learn and practice. It's genuinely frightening **for me** when my dog and I are alone in the park and an unfamiliar dog shows up, and without hesitation, the owner is ready to open the gate and "play" or "let the dogs figure it out". We humans are supposed to gauge and assess the situation to ensure the environment is safe and to prevent problems, injuries, dog bites, lawsuits, etc.
@SaroDogTraining

It is very hard for people to assess others and unfortunately some dog owners are not realistic or honest to admit that their dogs are not social.

What is the best approach to help My dog? My dog feeezes and watches when stressed. He won't move until the scary/exciting "thing" is gone. And sometimes wants to follow or lunge after it.
@SaroDogTraining
@SaroDogTraining Ай бұрын
I am guessing the scary thing is outdoors on the streets. If so, such a behaviours need to be addressed in levels. You need to work on him starting by to be relaxed, calm and walk by paying attention to you at home for few weeks or few months. Then you move to the next levels which are back yard, front yard, streets and the the parks. The outdoors are levels 3, 4 and 5. Which means you can not train a dog when is that level. You need to start the training at level 1 to build up the tolerance and calmness. Most people only try to solve the issue when and where the dog freezes which is a clear sign that the dog can not learn in that state of mind. Please feel free to let me know if you need additional information.

I'm so happy to see this video. Thank you for spreading this information! I used to feed my dog raw, but now that he's a senior he gets mostly cooked because it's easier on an older dog's digestion. Another problem with kibble is when they drink enough water to get the hydration they need, the food swells as it absorbs the water. Not good. Kibble's so high in carbs, which as you pointed out converts to sugar, which causes inflammation in the body. I gently cook his veggies, because dogs need the cell walls of the plants to break down a bit so they can absorb the nutrients. Again, thank you for this video! I'm also a fan of Dr Becker's.

@@SaroDogTraining Same, and you have this video! Even if people feel like they can't go raw or home cooked, due to time or money constraints, there are still so many inexpensive easy things they can do to improve their dog's diets. Dr Becker was asked what is the one thing people can do that's would give the most benefit and she said to give them a can of unsalted sardines twice a week, preferably packed in water, but really some olive oil is good for them, and you can always drain them on paper towels so they don't get too much if you can't find packed in water. People can also feed a little less kibble and top it with a tablespoon or so (depending on the size of the dog) of lean ground turkey, beef, or chicken. Even if only a few times a week, it'll help. Add a spoonful of gently steamed veggies (no onions) here and there, some berries for treats (blackberries, as you mentioned, blueberries, raspberries, pitted cherries), and in my experience all of my dogs love melons of all sorts. Even with only a little effort, we can improve our dogs' diets, and most importantly, health! I was just chatting with someone who has the same breed dog as I do, a scarce breed (Carolina dog, aka American dingo) that are medium size - 55 to 65 lbs, so a larger dog. She's been feeding hers raw, and gently cooked when they got older, and a varied diet. Her last dog lived until she was 18! Very unusual for a dog this size. Makes me hopeful about my senior.
@SaroDogTraining
@SaroDogTraining Ай бұрын
I agree. Just removing 25% of the kibble and replacing it with fresh food can make a big difference. I would love to get my dogs live long, healthy lives and that is my goal as well. To get my dogs live longer and up to 20 years or so. Thank you for sharing these information. They are very valuable.
@Catbooks
@Catbooks 18 күн бұрын
@@SaroDogTraining I think that's what every dog owner wants, for their dogs to live long and healthy lives. Who wouldn't if they love their dogs? But unfortunately we've been conditioned for many decades to believe all we have to do is buy bags of kibble, labelled "dog food," pour it into their dishes day after day, and that's it. Dogs are both hunters and scavengers. They require a variety of foods, primarily protein. I once asked one of my former vets if he knew a human who ate only packaged and/or canned food, if he thought they lived on a healthy diet. He was quiet for a moment, and then softly said "No." He was a kind man, and sincerely loved animals and his clients, but it was clear to me he'd never thought about that before. Not his fault, vets are taught very little about nutrition when they're in vet schools. It's getting better, thankfully, but still isn't good.
