What's crazy is this movie would be more "controversial" if it came out now than it was back in '99. The only "controversy" about this movie I could find from 1999 was this "The film was not well received by critics who compared it unfavorably to the films of John Waters and criticized the colorful production design. The lead actors were praised for their performances but some of the characters were described as stereotypical."

I watched this movie for the first time I think last year and underneath that colorful, satirical storytelling I also thought it had some really deep themes. It’s wild how many famous people are in it, and I LOVE the irony of Rupaul being in it. As for movie suggestions, "The Birdcage" is very memorable for Robin Williams’ performance and one of the first LGBT+ films I remember watching.

I like how color coded this movie is. The girls are pink, the boys are blue like to reinforce the stereotypes, but everyone else is just... Brown. I saw this movie the first time I was a teen probably. I knew I wasn't straight but I didn't know I had A TYPE yet hehehe (it's Graham), and i think they make everything in True Directions look plastic and fake - even the flowers! - because this life is just pretend. You are who you are and that's real.

Now THIS is a classic LGBTQ+ movie! It's funny, got a good message, and just an overall fun movie! However there is something really disturbing and yet hilarious at the same time about when Mary was using her son to simulate straight sex. I didn't get this movie when I first watched it. Or 'D.E.B.s'. I wasn't mature enough to see what they were trying to say. I didn't even know camps to force people to be what they aren't were real! When the talks about conversion "therapy" were in the news and I finally watched it again, it clicked. I see this movie as a dark comedy that hides the serious horror underneath. Threats of being kicked out of the family and house, being physically attacked or rejected, that's all very real.

The woman who played the antagonist in Casper does great as the house mother. I am LOVING how campy and gay this movie is so far. It's a nice change from the macabre Brokeback Mountain. It's also the 90s, so everyone smoked. As you go further into this movie you're getting the sexual humor more and I am living for it. This is my Letterboxd review; cause I watched this for the first time yesterday. Changing my initial rating from 4 stars to 5 stars, and giving it a much more thoughtful review because I genuinely love everything about how this movie is crafted and I think it has insane rewatchability. This movie is a satire on Christianity, conservativism, and gay stereotypes insofar as having the members of the gay conversion camp “True Direction” wear attire of the opposite sex, while trying to convert identity. The men wear these mesh crop tops, and the women wear short sleeve button downs and khaki shorts. The camera work is well done, all of the writing and acting is believable and that’s also a credit to the direction. The pastel palette is visual eye-candy but it also ends up becoming its own character when it’s usage narrates gender stereotypes (Boys = blues. Girls = pink). The movies got this well crafted message about identity about being true to yourself, and it shows when even the woman her runs the place and the cronies who work there are all closeted themselves. Plus it has a runtime of an hour and twenty-five minutes, and the story is nice and simple. It’s also completely hilarious. RuPaul wearing a “Straight is Great” is cinema. Natasha Lyonne is a lesbian icon, and being straight irl is just so reverse Neil Patrick Harris and I love it.

I’m shocked that Rupaul was in this movie. The poster of this movie was kinda giving Legally Blonde, NGL. I love how this movie is LGBTQ+ friendly.🏳️‍🌈🩷 2:53 Conservative Camp? I think it’s called. I didn’t even recognize Rupaul. He’s a lot lighter now.

what I like about this movie is that they don’t just go and have like a happy thanksgiving with their parents accepting they just are gay and the parents don’t change
