The same type of writing is in the cache canyon north of Egnar, CO ... down off the Slick Rock. I found it once while gathering stray cattle.. A whole group of names, from men who had camped there amongst the cedars and red rock caves ... perfect place to hide from the whole world .. writings are from J.W. CROWLEY (also found in Rabbig Valley Utah), BLACK SAM (also found in the Book Cliffs in several places), B CASADY (also found down in Cahone and Dove Creek) C W TONSEND and T R MCGREADE (cpl us cavalry) .... The best part about finding these places, is just knowing that I have been able to live just like they did ..... on horseback and free.

I have been to this location many times and is one of my favorite areas to camp and ATV. I just finished watching a documentary on PBS and one of the newspapers had his name spelled Cassady. His mother home schooled the kids and taught them how to read and write. Talking to some of the old timers in that area, they claim that a heavy rain storm happened and they took shelter. That spot would have had a flash flood going through there. Cassidy was in the higher section but would not have gotten out until the water level decreased. I have camped in that area when it rains and you can't imagine how many stream beds all of a sudden appear. We were stranded for four days and were very limited as to where we could ATV. I just happen to pick the right spot for the trailers and tents, so we didn't get flooded. The first morning, drove south east on the ATVS and when we returned we weren't able to get back to our campsite which was only 1/4 of a mile away, in sight of us. We had to drive another 32 miles going a different direction. We still had to cross more creeks full of water. The folks that camped with us were so relieved that we knew our roads well since we had been in that area at least 8 other times but never with rainy conditions. You can watch the PBS documentary for yourself at 27:05: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJ68cqCOrqqZoac

I saw a tree on Thousand Lake Mt. a bit west of the northern end of Capitol Reef with his name carved in it spelled the same way. It was obviously carved in that tree a very long time ago. Someone more recently (but still a while ago) carved a second "S" a bit above the original one. I certainly wouldn't be surprised if Butch carved his name there as well. I'm not sure where the location in this video is (obviously) but I'd guess it's not too far from Robber's Roost. I'd be willing to guess the tree I saw is no more than 40 miles away.
