Thanks so much Monk for all your efforts. Great to have a catch up interview! Butch is the best, what a fabulous drummer and great guy. Great to see him.

Love listening to Butch speak, and his Basie story-times. What an articulate, interesting and intelligent guy (even after all these years. lol)! For pure drumming talent, I loved all the Basie drummers. Man, the Basie era was the best of all! Great interview (both parts). Lookin' good, Butch!

I have a theory, Monk. - When Butch was new with Basie, Basie said to Al Grey, ‘’now you’re sitting by that new drummer. When you hear the intro, make sure he knows the arrangement.” I’m probably way off, but this was just such a fantastic conversation and interview, Monk!

Thanks for the comment and the good theory. It makes sense, hard to imagine that any Basie band initiation would include something that made the group sound ragged. Monk

RIP Butch. You were an absolute drumming hero of mine. Amazing chops and great style. But, you never answered my letter. Pearl probably never forwarded to you.

The technique and creativity part is very interesting, I’ve learned some technique through listening and watching online lessons but as he says I find myself often stuck after watching too much lessons, I don’t feel creative or free the same way as if I’m watching a concert or listen to a song on KZbin jamming a long, I learn by hearing other instruments in the band, knowing that if for example in a big band the horns start to get into a blast i most likely should hit harder or bang loose together with them , don’t know how much I learn or how accurate it becomes doing it that way but I think I learn something at least

Hello, thanks for the positive comment. I had only heard about Tuba Skinny but now have visited a few youtube recordings of them. Terrific! They honor the tradition and expand on it.
