What a band!!! They released a live album that year (1979) from the same european tour, called "On the Road", I think it was recorded in Montreaux, including a fantastic version of Splanky and some tunes they played on this concert as well.

After watching the Master at work here with the great musicians in his orchestra, take time out to see him being interviewed by Oscar Peterson around 1980....amazing stuff. Probably one of the best musical interviews I have EVER seen. CBO is the best.

*basie80* that is what blows my mind about his music. He was not greedy with his talent. He used his talent to inspire and teach others to continue the pursuit of excellence. He was a musical saint -he was talking through his music about the way that music is supposed to be as an inspiration to greatness, for every one of us, forever. It is not a sin to want excellence, and you don't have to be a jerk to stir it from a person.

Yes, where's Sonny, Count says his name but can't make it out. I just watched the solo. A valiant effort. Basie only used the best musicians. Although for me personally I would have preferred Rufus or Sonny even Buddy. But this fellow was sensational just the same. I loved the way Count interacted with his solo, his subtle hand gestures are hilarious and profoundly articulate. I also enjoyed the respect he received from Count, the band and the audience in total. Wonderful to see that.

Re: "Sonny"...I think Basie was referring to Sonny Cohn on trumpet. He had the solo in "Shiny Stockings". Also, drummer Butch Miles did an excellent job in all aspects, IMHO.

Hi Jim, Thanks for the info/update... I recently became aware of Butch Miles, and have since been listening to his work, that's available on YT at least. He's awesome! I was so used to seeing Sonny that I wasn't aware of the other greats Basie employed. My other favorites I recently discovered are Duffy Jackson and Harold Jones (kzbin.info/www/bejne/kHjOdGWMZ5xgZ68). Basie always hired the best. As a drummer myself, I recently updated and posted a handful of Buddy Rich charts (kzbin.infovideos?view_as=subscriber) Thanks for sharing!

Hi Barry- I had the great pleasure of seeing Butch live with Basie back in 1977, and later, after Basie had passed, in the late 90's and early 2000's. Great player and great guy. Harold Jones still plays very well (Now with Tony Bennett).

Having played many of the Count's charts in a big band, no one can add just the right piano embellishments to make the piece work. What a talent. 28.8.18 UK. Cont Basie Lyrics.UTUBE Forgot to say- nobody "seems" to care Not quite the whole truth. The 12 yrs we taipsed London streets accompanied by the abused victims of the Legal. Political. Charity. Health. Police. Home Office. Embassy Local govt. Media systems incl the BBC proved to us without any doubt that holistic selfless caring across contexts did not and does not exist. We found one and a half people despite 7 days a week effort. There was no shortage of people offering aggression. The threats to kill us made by US Security firms working in Uk was enhanced by the US Embassy. The 1999pp evidence clearly indicates establ manslaughter. Oh, we almost forgot the Universities corruption incl the Dusseldorf lunatics helping Lufthansa to cover up re air crash. We refer to the Euro secrecy re Mental Health of courseWE did not need the BBCs advice "hide documents abroad". Nobody does care. Try proving 1000 pp evidence aint so. The courts and royals cant. Can you The police attacks on us have failed.
