After a HVAC serviceman fixed our house AC, the heater stopped working. When I checked the system I found the burners would shut off after about 20 seconds. We live 50 miles from town so there is always $150 mileage charge everytime the service technician has to come out, so I figured I try to fix it by replacing the flame sensor; didn't work. The HVAC system is about 30 years old so rather than pouring more money into the system we called a more local company to quote a new system. When I told the tech owner what happened he said he would look at the current system but could not do any repairs because I had touched it. It turns out the previous tech had installed the wrong main control board (the correct board was no longer available because the system was too old) which was not compatible with the old flame sensor. Eventually we did replace the system and in all honesty can understand his policy as he said once an DIY repair is done there is simply no way to determine what mistakes could have been made, and since he guarantees all his work, he has to walk away from any jobs with a DIY repairs history.

Hard to overestimate the value of AllData. When I did the AC in my Jeep XJ, I paid the $20 and got the month of AllData for that vehicle. The wiring problem turned out to be a faulty component that just had to be bypassed since it was unavailable but figuring that out was a lot easier with the right wiring diagrams and descriptions of how things worked. Good luck with the BMW.

Sending electronics back for repair is always questionable. Especially for intermittent issues. On communications electronics we started marking the boards in a way to see if we got the same unit back and if anything was changed. I think it's just a process of connecting the unit to a test rig and running series of tests. Lot's of intermittent issues can make it by the test, especially if the unit is tested cold.

$600 if I recall correctly the inline 6 cylinder engines. N52 N53 N54, the ENGINE ECU, suffered from injector drivers failing. You pop out the ECU, get a hot air gun. Replace all of the Injector MOSFETs, which cost around £1.50 each. The issue is well known all over the Internet. The longest part was to wait for the mosfets to be delivered. Causes are the Coil packs go, injectors are an issue, I think there has been 12 or more revisions of the injectors. And they are a sealed unit. But main issue is injector failures cause the mosfets to burn out. The car i done the fix on. Had 4 drivers that were shorted. Customer brought new injectors, and the car still did not start. After the mosfet were replaced, started immediately.. on 2nd start

This brings back memories of last week when I replaced the fuel pump in the Marquis. I was experiencing extended crank times and checked fuel pressure; a bit weak. I replaced it with a new OEM pump. 8 bolts hold it is and one electrical plug and a spring-loaded clamp and she's out. Eight bolts back in and electrical plug and fuel line. It sure didn't look anything like that. Those gas fumes were bad; I had to remove the gas cap. Great video!

And a way to actually test it. I don't even know how they could even attempt to bench test something like ignition coil or fuel injector drivers. How could they simulate the proper immobilizer signal without knowing what it's looking for?

@BesprovolkiSvias Жыл бұрын
1. some sensor could be disconnected such as Camshaft Position Sensor, which might be used by DME (computer) to produce spark impulses. Just like bunch of other harnesses and wires were disconnected. Computer may not know when to generate impulses. But on second thought, I presume that DME (computer) would set Error Codes if Camshaft Position Sensors (any of the two) were disconnected. 2. AllData mentions incorrect design (shape) of camshaft sensor and shows new (correct) design available for installation. 3. But something more abstract does not make sense: if "dealer butchered BMW", how did it MOVE on its own to customer's home? It moved on its own after "butchering"? Then what customer did to it?

I hate to say this, but I knew someone who worked in electronics refurb years ago. He claimed that 90% of the things that were sent in weren't actually defective... Most of the time he could just re-box the equipment and just send it back or resell it. In fact if he did nothing he sent out 90% good units. The other 10% were either too difficult or too expensive to fix anyway. Many DIY guys and even many field techs are shot gunning the computer replacement. They are pulling good computers. So why even test them? Just send them back "fixed" and then the tech can keep shot gunning the car until he finds what's really wrong. It works for 90% of the jobs... for the other 10% you give refunds. I know it's cynical of me to say this, but I also do computer repair on PC's. and it's been a very long time since I've done a component level repair on a board. It's literally not worth the time and effort to find and replace a bad IC or flash an new EPROM and that's usually going to cost my customer way more than the machine is worth, assuming I can even find a schematic and the software. If I can't find a replacement board, it's time for an upgrade... So unless the fault in the computer is really obvious, the schematic and parts are available and the rebuilder really knows what he's doing and has a lot of time... I suspect that more than a few computers that get sent in for rebuild never even get opened before they are returned... And 90% of the time they will still work fine. For the other 10% the customer gets a refund and no one gets hurt. When it comes to car computers... I've only had to replace one and I got a junk yard one for $80.00 which worked a treat. It never crossed my mind to get a refurb or rebuild the original. Most car computers really don't go bad (with certain exceptions).

This car reminds me a jaguar I did a diag few years back, needed a fuel pump, A week later got a call new fuel pump and still no start, Also customer replaced the rail pressure sensor . So went back to verify the repairs, no fuel pressure at the rail, fuel pump sounds like was working, so last thing was check the in side the tank, every line inside the tank was cut off to replace the old pump, new pump was just sitting inside the tank 😳

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics If the fuel pump runs, it will pressurize the tank. Fuel will flow in the correct hose. Sounds simple to me. 🤣

No, no, no... That's a Bluetooth pump (but it needs electromagnetic petrol.)
