imo, the fact you can't skirt around them or in any way avoid them is what kills the tension. In the first game you saw/heard them and could most often work to try avoid them, and that made them an unknown danger and it kept them scary. now you know you just have to keep blasting them away every 45 sec.
@brunorottierstercq1990
@brunorottierstercq1990 Жыл бұрын
@@Xadhoom80 Yes i agree. The Perimeter Defense System is a bit of a cheat item imo. The first game did it well as it allowed you to use it with the seamoth but if you wanted to go deeper you were forced to use evasion tactics with the cyclops and prawn instead. Below Zero just grants you the Perimeter Defense System easily and as long as you react like Butch did in that moment you can just leasurly explore without too much worry.

Once again, so proud of you! I got to be here while the playthrough was current this time, rather than having to catch up on video backlog, and it felt good. This time when you said "together?", it actually felt like we *were* doing it together, rather than me having missed the boat. (Or the spaceship.) I honestly feel so much pride and respect every time you tackle and inevitably overcome something that scares you so badly in these games. I've had to do that myself in similar ways - I don't have severe thalassophobia the way you do, but I think I have hints of it because I definitely have some quiet anxiety about open water and unseen dangers in the Subnautica games, and can't handle it at all in real life (I noped out of a snorkel trip in perfectly clear water during a vacation once after like ten seconds in the ocean). And something about watching you take on these games both demonstrates how genuine those fears can be, but also inspires in how dedication and bravery and a bit of bloody-mindedness can push you (the universal you) past those fears. No one has to make themselves uncomfortable to conquer a phobia if they don't want to - it's a miserable process that should always be optional, only undertaken by people who want to expand their limits or who are making unwise decisions for views - but if someone DOES want to, they can. (I mean, obviously, this is a video game, where you know nothing can actually hurt you, and that's very different from, say, making someone not scared of the ocean in real life. But the fact remains that there were things that very badly scared you going into these games, and you overcame a lot of that fear over the course of your playthrough, so anyone arguing that you didn't make clear improvement and become less fearful over time as you acclimatized would be talking nonsense. Whether or not the threats were real, you still demonstrated that in a controlled environment, if you choose to tackle your fears, you *can* become less afraid. And I think that's wonderful for people to be able to see and know they have the option of, whether or not they ever choose to explore it.)

Also it defies biology when you cure the leviathan, as it is biologically impossible for that to happen if it's dead, so the leviathan must be alive, which is another thing that just shows how unfinished the Sam storyline was, cuz yk it was remade by a completely different person, than the one who made the original storyline of SN:BZ which was actually interesting.

And exactly this is the problem with Below Zero: You don't even have to complete the story lines to finish the game. You never found the Omega Lab in the Lilipads Biome, you never found the cure to the bacterium that Sam was working on and you didn't cure the leviathan. You never even found the Ultra High Capacity Oxygen tank nor the Storage Module for the Sea Truck. Don't get me wrong, the game is still good, but it is so lacking when I compare it to the original one in the regard of stroyline and equipment progression. Anyway, thank you for the amazing content and the entertainment Mr. Butch. Was absolutely amazing to watch the two games from your perspective for the first time!

So… just wanted to thank you for playing these d*mn games lol I’ve watched several people play through both the original and below zero and a couple have thalassophobia… you’re the first person to make me feel fully validated with your reactions… and also make me lmfao for those same reactions 😂 I ducked and died inside when I saw the reefbacks for the first time lol and just watching you go further and further despite the visceral urge not to is making me push myself further as well…(I’ve still not finished subnautica and I started it a little before you I think) but I’m going to… eventually. I do a lot of sitting and thinking of whether or not it’s really worth it and then sleeping til daytime and repeating.. but I do do it. I don’t know if any of that made actual sense but to reiterate the main point, truly thank you so much for playing the games and especially for posting them. You’re hilarious and have just helped me push through a lot of the fear that keeps me planted firmly in my base decorating instead of exploring lol

Now imagine if you had made the sleep module right from the start, you could have taken all those trips with music on board. And sleep for day time and everything :D

Ooohh boy, a lot happened this time. The dead zone was a trip. But my gosh, I felt it in my heart, I didn't even need the music cue when he didn't have all the components for the body. Oh my gosh I felt it. Like a punch in the gut, one would think I was the one playing.

On the subject of Below Zero being worse than original game... I know I'm late to the party but I just discovered Subnautica (and Below Zero). It turns out I had both games sitting in my library with 0 hours played, like so many other games so I decided to dive in and discover a very deep story :) Subnautica has taken me to the wonderful places, but also to scary places as well, which made me shit my pants even without thalassophobia. Now, Below Zero, I feel like it is supposed to be an expansion for Subnautica, but looking at the release dates there is more than 3 years between the releases. But remember, I just "discovered" these games in mid-2024 so for me it feels like it is an expansion, although I'm perfectly aware it is not. That being said, I can understand why people think OG game is much better. There is very little changes in the game mechanics, leviathan creatures are scary for 2 minutes only at the very end of the game, map is smaller, story is.... well, that is subjective but I think that story in Below Zero holds just fine. Ending for me was much better than the ending of Subnautica, but still that is subjective. The only important thing in that comparison is that I enjoyed both games playing them in quick succession, so Below Zero really felt like an expansion to me. And if you're new to this game like I was in mid-2024 please, just ignore the comments that Below Zero is worse than Subnautica. These comments were (probably) valid back in 2021, when Below Zero was released, three years after OG Subnautica. But long time has passed since, and if you play them both for the first time so many years later, you will not be disappointed.

From terror of leaving the lifepod to being chill dealing with the leviathan right at the very end. I will miss your subnautica videos, will probably rewatch through all of it. Thank you butch for the most entertaining playthrough of any game I have ever watched. Roll on subnautica 3 🥲

Already have ideas for the next game? I wanted to suggest considering Soma as an option. Technically, this is a horror game, but I perceive it more as a thriller. The developers have added a mode that disables all dangers, for people who do not tolerate horror, simply because they themselves present the game as a narrative experience. There are a lot of underwater things in the game, but the main plot is built around the practical application of philosophical questions about what makes us human
