The original Subnautica is one of the best experiences I've ever had in gaming, I really hope the devs will capture the majestic beauty but also eldritch horror that the original game had. You are among the few who understands fear of the unknown. Horror media as in movies and games need to realize this: subnautica and PT are scary because fear of the unknown. As the great Lovecraft said it: " the oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear. And the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown." Subnautica knows this and takes full advantage of it. That's why, a sandbox adventure game at the end of the day is scarier than most resident evil games or any other horror combined.

I am with you on that, but I think below zero set the tone we can expect. The game not only was overall less scary, but it even streamlined survival by throwing tons of crates everywhere to open near objectives, which mostly (if not entirely) eliminated the desire to prepare ahead of time for a journey. I don't think I have ever seen a company go from streamlined development, into non streamline in the next game. Especially since below zero sold a lot of copies

@@henrikbaum Which is sad within itself (the game that is), because that truly was all the horror the game had to offer, but the creature isn't really that big of a threat considering how long it disengages and how easy it is to repair to full before it even thinks about turning around. Having no sense of depth or fear of loss took away from the horror in below zero. Game is fine overall, but for scare factor? Completely missed what made the first game so scary at times.

Something I don’t see very many people bring up as a theory for the third game, is that little piece of dialogue in the Neptune blueprint that mentions a *“Warning: The use of alien materials to power the craft may increase its range in unpredictable ways.”* I haven’t seen many people talking about what if Riley just.. jettisons himself to an Abyss type planet by mistake? Particularly after hearing “welcome home to alterra, your debt is a TRILLION dollars.” Or heck, maybe he even just turned around at the phasegate and went back to 4546B but miscalculated his landing site and went off the edge of the crater, stuck thousands of metres deep with a broken Habitat Builder? I dunno, I just think there’s so many people talking about how they want a deep abyss game and for the character to be silent again so there’s definitely a way to satisfy both issues.
@TheLastBacon Жыл бұрын
It is a fair point :) Maybe the Neptune can fly way further than we thought!
@joethealiensoon Жыл бұрын
Very interesting, could be flavour text, could be a good clue. Maybe next game could be that you’re an alterra employee searching for Riley. Would add something which I think the first game did great was that you were just a mear worker for a massive corporation. The feeling of being a tiny cog both in the world and in the story wove them together great. Could also let in multiplayer, you’re a group piloting a ship to a world Riley has fled too or crashed on
@AfromanRants Жыл бұрын
@@joethealiensoon not only that, Riley was merely a Janitor he wasn’t even a high ranking employee. As for multiplayer, I too hope they add it but I would much prefer if it makes it obvious playing multiplayer is non-canon. Playing with others and opening the universe up like that can be done very poorly and completely take away from the isolated feeling of the first game.

I think what they could do is make the water incredibly murky, and you need specific technologies that can be unlocked in order to be able to see further and each technology is locked behind a new creature, for example, if you want sensors in order to detect creature A, then you have to enter an area where creature A is common so that its incredibly terrifying but you know you need it to protect yourself.

1) I really appreciate Unknown Worlds leaving the debug console available on console version of the game ❤ since mods aren’t possible. I wish games without more detailed accessibility features would do the same. 2) I really appreciate the discussion about Horror vs Terror games, because you both make a very good point that the terms are sort of used interchangeably but they really have very different meanings. Disclaimer : I am an English and Grammar nerd, but I don’t always know all the technical terms. That being said, let’s look at the words Horror and Terror and their similar derivatives with the suffix ‘-ific’ “Horror, an intense feeling of fear, shock, or disgust“ is a word most often associated with the sort of gut -wrenching, sometimes can’t-look-away, nauseous disgust that games like Bioshock, Last of Us, and Silent Hill are well known for. Not that these games can’t have elements of Terror in them, but they fall into Horror mainly because of the elements of body horror, graphic violence, and gore often associated with slasher flicks or SAW movies. They are experiences you never want to see again because they are so against everything deemed normal. “Horrific/Horrifying experiences” are the ones no one really wants to have happen, no one wants to experience, the ones you want to forget but can’t because the Wrongness has been Seared into Your Mind and you will wake up at night screaming and sick 🤢. The experiences you never want again. Now let’s look at “Terror, extreme fear” Pulse-racing, adrenaline rush, fear either of something or just that need to run away, get away, something is after you. Something with teeth and claws. If horror is “a moment of fear/disgust” then “extreme fear” implies that terror should be worse, right? So why is the word derived from Terror “terrific,” and why does it have a better connotation than “horrific”? Because you’re safe. You made it. And you’re still grinning about it too. If you’re living to talk about that intense “terrifying” high, it’s because you LIVED. You made it. And you’re able to grin about it. Because coming down from that intense adrenaline rush leaves you feeling exhausted but alive. Terror is something you look back on and go “wow, I survived that. And I’m proud of it!” Whereas horror? Horror is something you look back on and shudder about, wince about, feel a little sick over. Horror lingers Terror is exciting So…yeah! I agree Subnautica is definitely more of a terror game than a horror game. The horror elements are in some of the creatures (Warpers 🔪 😰) and the deep deep deeeeeeep dark places, and the implication of wanton death and destruction of all that got sucked in by that stupid quarantine gun. The horror is in watching Riley slowly get sicker and sicker, and wondering if Al-An is alone in the universe, what will happen if/when the Bacteria gets out. But the Terror is what keeps us coming back for more 😉

I absolutely love both existing subnautica games and what i will like to see on the 3rd game kinda is a "mix" of them, in order to reach the best subnautica experience in every way In Subnautica 1 we have a "common" leviathan (reaper) that is way more dangerous and are placed in useful areas so you encounter them, we are getting rewarded by exploring the differents biomes with piece of aurora ships, lifepods and blueprints, all of the biomes are cool and you dont really feel bored exploring them except for a few like crag field. You feel alone and non-confident as you are the last survivor of an uknown planet and warpers are chasing you (their radio messages weir scary af) and so, the suspense is always there I think the second game is less scary but i think it is mainly due to the fact we don't have the fear of the uknown cause we know the type of game. We wont get the same adrenaline we had playing the first one years ago and it's normal. Now here are some points i would like to mention In Below Zero, the "common" leviathan (chelicerate) is a joke, he is smaller, it's easy to escape and you can play avoiding they're zone almost all the game except for a few aliens artifacts. Some of biomes are useless and annoying like all of the artic ones below land and the land can be quite annoying to with the hail, the temperature and the fact that you'll need a snowfox (actually cool) otherwise your life will be pure hell in the artic spires. Although what i love in Subnautica Below Zero is the fauna and some biomes i found so incredibly beautiful and creative in their design : the shadow, ice worm and ventgarden leviathan, the goofy aah holefish, the amazing and intimadating squid shark - Gorgeous underwater biomes like Crystal cave, Fabricator's Cavern and mostly the one and only Deep Liliypad Caves which is for me personally the coolest biomes of the series Plus Below Zero is more about the story : you understand quickly with the pda's and have nice dialogues, i am one that liked al-an talk and exploring different sites for the lore such as the Omega, Koppa, Frozen Levithan, (Bonus : seatruck is so great with the speed boost) That was long and nobody will read this but idk i wrote it for fun

I hope the atlas submarine is a thing in subnautica 3 if the game takes place in water and if it potentially has multiplayer. The cyclops was my absolute favorite thing in the first game and now I want a bigger mobile base sub if the map supports it.

I’d love to see a big sub :)

Probably won't have a multiplayer, but maybe they will add something like a cyclops or a little bit bigger.

I'd love to see that reactive biomes feature get added to the next game, sand kind of shifting through the water and the mushrooms having different reactions to the player

In Sub Nautica 3 I hope they work on the thalasophobia area, seeing the huge Aurora just gave me the creeps. Perhaps a bigger map where it is much harder to travel and require a sort of Cyclops to travel through from point to point, allowing you to sleep underwater under (like the sea truck) huge depths just gives me such a cool feeling.

My most wanted for Subnautica 3 is: 0) Bring back the Cyclops! Nothing more terrifying than moving slow in that thing looking out the bulb window. It felt SO 3000 leagues under the Sea and I want it back. The seatruck wasn't even close. 1) New planet. It's not that I don't like this planet, but there is something about being there before that made Below Zero less scary...like, if the Leviathan's are the worst of it...then it can't beat the first game. Having a new planet with a new mystery with a new great force of terror (Such as something Lovecraftian in scope) would be more potent than another game with the mystery aliens and big fish...unless you can make BBIIIIIG fish in the next one that can crush me even in my Prawn or my Cyclops. 2) New mystery. (no more aliens unless the threat is far more sinister than the virus) I think Subnautica hit it on the head with the disaster introduction. The accident of the whole thing, the screams of terror and fear in the recordings, the confusion...it built so much. Whereas Below Zero the voice recordings and the people in them had so much command with the world and it never felt like it really unwound them the way Subnautica one did...nor did it feel like the world really defeated them by anything but a fluke. 3) More focus on Terror and less on pretty. Below Zero was SO pretty but it lacked those "dread biomes" that made Subnautica one feel truly terrifying. Empty dunes, black ravines, etc...I love the beautiful biomes in Below Zero (Lilypads is one of the coolest concepts I've ever seen in a videogame, I was gobsmacked)...but the finale wasn't as scary as the first...and the lack of terror I felt throughout the game wasn't really replaced with awe when the plot of the game had little to do with that. With Below Zero, outside of the crystal depths (because of distance), I never dread much of anything in the way I dread having to move through the dunes or have to go down that ravine, etc. In fact in many cases I was downright excited. The lilypad depths were just pretty...not scary, and just another little squid shark I'd dealt with a lot. So the sense of falling down into an exposed crack was met with a surprise and subversion but at the end there never felt like there was that scary of a place. The frozen wastes, if they were flat and long and had no refuge? Sure...but since they were so tight with canyons it just felt like a Disney ride. 4) ROAMING leviathans...not localized, full map, large scale roaming...almost no biome is safe if you are unlucky enough which can reintroduce the fear of the dark and unkown in the distance even when you know a biome. There is something about how localized the monster zones of patrol are in Below Zero that I never felt at threat. Once you knew where they were they really were never going to be an issue....they also almost always put them WAY up high where they never reached me walking around in my prawn. I never ran into the ocean Leviathan...just the underground one they more or less forced on you. 5) Actually don't be afraid to kill me. Below Zero I sware I got attacked by every creature and ended up fine...to the point the fear that you WOULD kill me left entirely. The initial terror goes away whereas with Subnautica I felt the terror stayed because it was a mix of fear of death and the dread of the visuals.

only things i want lore-wise in subnautica 3 and that's a continuation of what subnautica 1 was taking place where the first one left of whith rylie robinson after waiting years in space turning back to 45 46b this time landing in the capital of the precursors starting out similar to the original whith the safe shallows and you even find one of the sea emperors you helped hatch which has gotten significantly bigger once you progress you realized the pda has been upgraded with new emergency blueprints like a sea bus or droid helper npc which would help collect materials and one of the new biomes could the a dead architect city similar to new york but underwater and using like the green blocky stuff

Im hyped for the 3rd game. I really hope there are a VAST amount of different huge things in the far reaches of the ocean, the 1st game as i played it I was like "okay woah 300 meters deep this is insane! Once i get the cyclops who knows what i'll see i bet this game will go down to 4000 meters and have giant scary noise monsters! But i learned that the void is empty and couldve at least had one or two scary things in there or at least an ocean floor" i hope the 3rd game builds in that direction

I hope they never give up the Subnautica environment ever, and keep it in the ocean please. As a kid I've always feared the ocean since it's so deep and vast and unknown, we know more about the surface of mars then our own ocean. Keep the game scary as possible, have those uncomfortable silent moments and new horrifying sea beasts. Love the game being more survival over story but when story things do happen and you discover a wreckage or a life pod it's a story that sends chills down your spine. Edit: I'm really excited to hear that they're using Unreal Engine 5, the game is gonna look amazing and run amazing at the same time.
