When working with those metal leafs try to apply a thinner layer of the glue. And once that has dried, apply the metal with the paper still sticking to it. Press that paper on there and peel it off the leafs, which rather choose to stay with the glue. For remaining blank areas use whatever leaftovers(!) you have. I hope to see some colourless metal applications on your bike builds in the future!

1:00 I get that it's a joke, but just in case people don't know, the standards are there for cross-conpatibility. It comes from a rejection of corporate businesses that try to proprietorize parts. Disc brakes aren't common, due to damage from grinding. A rim brake has a lot of play, and is out of the way when doing stalls or grinds. As far as I know, half link chains, and probably a few other things that can be seen on other bicycle styles, were invented for bmx. And bmx takes from other styles as well, including the Fingers Crossed 20" bmx with full suspension. Your finished bike is awesome!

I know a lot of what you said was tongue in cheek, however I just couldn’t let some of it slide. It’s not necessarily that BMX riders or companies are backwards, the reality is that simplicity is often best. Having worked in the bike industry for over 20 years I have seen many MTB and road companies successfully introduce new standards. Often, these don’t offer any real benefit to the average rider but instead drive sales for their brand. It’s good business and keeps the industry alive. In the BMX world, BSD, Wethepeople, Stranger and others have tried to introduce oversized bars, tapered head tubes etc. etc. but ultimately they didn’t catch on. Why? Well, they just aren’t necessary. No one doubts the science behind these products but they are trying to fix a problem that doesn’t exist currently. Combine that with the fact that the BMX market is typically younger, with less disposable income - any innovation needs to offer a significant improvement over what’s out there already. Pivotal seat systems are a great example. Your bike is definitely very interesting and fair play to you for putting in the effort. As you say though, a lot of the components just wouldn’t last on the streets.

The entire reason I’ve been brakeless on my bmx for a decade is because once I got into mtb and felt the power of a hydraulic disc brake, the brake on my bmx just wasn’t gonna cut it no matter how well set up it was. I’d love to run a disc brake on it. I’ve seen a few people experiment with that now and I understand that Profile Racing now make a disc hub that uses the non drive side cone as a disc mount but jeez it’s expensive just to be able to run a decent brake! May have to fire up the mig welder and weld a mount on like this frame in the video has and get one of those Hope hubs instead

It is amazing how you have neglected any research about any of the points of BMX you seem to have some very harsh criticisms about. There are now Freestyle grade BMX Carbon Fiber rims manufactured by Eclat, in fact they now offer a complete bike that feature carbon fiber rims as stock spec. The 3/8" (10mm) axle standard for front wheels has been predominant for a number of years, and has proven itself more than useful. I can see the oversight regarding disc brakes in the Freestyle world, but they are more than accepted in the race world and have been for a number of years. I would make a comment about how disc brake compatible cassette hubs have been available at the 110 spacing found on BMX frames, but the adjustments you made to the hope hub does seem to be more your style. I thank you for spending some time in the world of BMX, I hope you find more to love as you enrich yourself.

Such a cool build! You make a great point about stems and the diameter of the handlebar clamp area. BMX should definitely increase the clamping diameter. I'm really interested to see how the rear wheel holds up. Quality components and a great wheel build for sure but is the flange-to-flange narrower (~50mm?), and if so won't the lateral strength be a little low for BMX?
@andrewince88242 жыл бұрын
Bmx wheels get their strength from usually being 36 hole and only 20". There's one heck of a triangle created by the spokes. Even a 32h with a disc mount will be pretty solid.
@Ali_Clarkson2 жыл бұрын
Tbf the same flange size is used on bigger wheels (like my street trials bike) and they’ve been faultless, with the extra stiffness of smaller rims and spokes I really don’t think there’s any strength issues regarding the wheels (for my riding anyway)
@dub_rider2 жыл бұрын
that's another awesome and unique build there Ali, love it!
@andrewince88242 жыл бұрын
BMX Hardly shys from development. We've adapted to tyres over 2.5", developed 9t integrated drivers, freecoasters. We have 19mm, 22mm and 24mm BBs all in the pursuit of perfection. Discs are heavy and pretty pointless with slick tyres and small wheels. A U-brake is more than sufficient. Furthermore, removing the disc mount offers a wider flange spacing for a stronger wheel. All modern BMX run a 14mm rear and 10mm front axle. It keeps a good balance between weight and strength. 25.4mm OS is fairly common on bars now a lot more force is being put through them. Carbon rims are becoming a thing with Eclat Carbonic rims coming about. Adapters really aren't necessary. Just run a 24mm Mid BB, it's a standard in BMX with BSD, Odyssey and Primo offering solid cranksets and BBs in this size. You should use half-link chains. They're stronger and offer a refined adjustment. BMX looks simple but under the surface is a massive drive to get more out of a bike without adding anything unnecessary. Some incredible innovation comes from this. Box components started as a racing BMX company buy have taken that knowledge into MTB with some brilliant kit.
@Ali_Clarkson2 жыл бұрын
I was being hyperbole regarding the lack of development 😋 I was just poking a bit of fun at the hate some brands get when they try to introduce updated standards (tapered headtubes etc). You make some good points with the other parts though…I was being specific to street/park Bmx regarding the lack of disc brakes and 31.8mm bars etc but I guess I wasn’t vocal about that…I see race Bmx as a completely different thing. As for the 24mm bb, I did actually just try and use these cranks with a 24mm mid bb but even though both brands claim to be 24mm either the bearings are slightly under or the axle is slightly over as they simply wouldn’t fit, shame as that would’ve been nice and simple! I do have to disagree with you about halflink chains being stronger though. As a trials rider chain strength is very important and halflink chains are a no-go! The curved shape of the plates inherently want to be stretched straight under high loads, when they do stretch they become weaker. It’s maybe not so bad on a Bmx with less torque which is why people have had good experiences with them but I can’t bring myself to run one on any bike.
@andrewince88242 жыл бұрын
@@Ali_Clarkson things like tapered headsets and 31.8 bars will always struggle to get into street or park because the standards in place make the bikes so easy to maintain and upgrade. We see the problems in MTB with trying to find compatible parts, hubs especially are a nightmare with so many standards. BMX thrives on the simplicity of simply needing a headset rather than a specific headset or a stem rather than a specific stem. Salt has a seat and seatpost combo which can build a BMX. The seat holds a hex key with a 5mm and 6mm end, the seatpost has a 17mm socket. Between those three tools an entire bike can be sorted out parkside, something which the BMX scene loves. A lot of consumables are kept available because the standards are so common. New headset bearings cost less than £15, a replacement pair of hub bolts are about £5. Brake pads are brake pads, for less than £10 you can get a set which you know fits. With the lack of dedicated BMX shops this really helps keep the bikes running, most spares can be found in Halfords. Elsewise it's a wait for the parts to come online. With MTB there's a risk the part won't fit and you'll need to send it back and get something new, not so with BMX. WTP tried tapered but no one wants to go out and get a new frame, fork and headset when their 2015 frame is still golden and the fork they've run since 2010 is still solid, to the BMX scene it feels unnecessary and almost like a cash-grab. 24mm BBs and 25.4mm clamps have remained on the fringes because running them requires a new BB for £30 and new cranks for about £150, or a stem for £50 and bars for about the same. Sure these things offer better performance but at a cost and complexity no one wants. Must say, kind of odd the cranks and BB didn't work on your build, I've seen some DJ builds do exactly that and work but it's probably down to particular cranks and bearings being just right together. With that said, a BMX crank and MTB BB seems more common in that field so maybe it's not a priority for manufacturers to make it work the other way round. Threaded BBs are certainly easier to work on, that's one thing BMX could benefit from, press fit is a nightmare to remove for replacement.

BMX has been adopting other standards as the years go by. Those integrated 45 degree "Campy" bearings that BMXers use in the headset actually come from the road bike world. Tubeless and carbon rims have been making their way into BMX freestyle for almost a decade. BMX picked up on threadless head sets more or less at the same as mtb and road. But some things like hydro disc are less common because many freestylers are brakeless and those that aren't often run cable gyros. (Trickstuff produces a hydro gyro when they feel like it, but most BMXers aren't dropping that kind of cash on a gyro.) As for handle bars, there is no reason for BMX to keep getting bar bloat like MTB.

personally i feel like there were somethings you could of used to not have to make it harder on yourself. first being the stem, bsd, cult, and a few other companies make stems that are meant for the 1" clamp system, shims on bars in bmx is not the best idea because of the rigidity and how much tension is put on the bars so unfortunately they are way more prone to slip just pumping around. second the BB, I'm not sure the size of the spindle on the cranks but there are tons of options for BB's and various sizes like 19mm, 22mm, and 24mm so that would of eased up the process a little more. all in all cool video and interesting to see the premium frame being adapted for discs

Very tempted by a 22” Bmx, I think that’s a nice compromise 👍🏻

Bike looks really nice. I did the complete opposite, took a 29er single speed rigid mtb and threw on a bunch of bmx parts.

Maybe disks are rare in BMX freestyle, where they moved away from brakes entirely a long time ago, but in BMX racing disk brakes are very widely used. You can buy disk brake adapters for bmx dropouts from Dan's Comp. BMX racing is no stranger to carbon, and ODI lock on grips were being used on bmx in the 90s
