The first song that the Buttholes “play” is a recording of the late Alemayehu Eshete singing “Love Is Love,” likely from the Africa Dances compilation LP released in 1973. Ironically, the MTV host titled it “Nigerian Elvis,” and Eshete was in fact known as the Ethiopian Elvis. The Buttholes pulled a similar stunt in 1987 with the song called “Kunitz” on their Locust Abortion Technician LP, ripped directly from a cassette they heard at a Thai restaurant.

Except the song was called 'Kuntz'. Good, but no ceegar! I had wondered about this for ages - this amazing Butthole Surfers clip was on MTV Europe in 1990 and showed them playing 'Revolution', 'Lonesome Bulldog' from the forthcoming 'Pioughd' LP and the curiously excellent, 'Nigerian Elvis' which is actually 'Feqer Feqer New' by Alemayehu Eshete, indeed titled 'Love is Love' from the 1973 Africa Dances LP as @morganfitzp mentions above. Now then....the 'Ethiopiques' series of comps didn't appear until the later 90s so the Buttholes either had a copy of 73 LP or picked up a cd reissue that came out in 1988, which is probably more likely. They obviously found it suitably amusing to sing/play over the top....and yes, as @morganfitzp correctly states, similar amusements had appeared with them sonically manipulating a song by a Thai artist (the name and original track title have been revealed before on forum threads) as the chorus sounded like the word c***, thus the excellent and sinister track 'Kuntz' on Locust Abortion Technician. Nerdy fact fans around the world will be thrilled by these sleuthing developments

Hearing Locust Abortion Technician when it came out was an inspiration to me during my immpresionable and vulnerable teenage years to continue making questionable life choices.

I saw the Buttholes twice in 1988…the first one in the Mean Fiddler on Feb 11th, and then at the Brixton Academy on Sept. 23rd! And twice in ‘89….at London’s Subterania and 3 days later at Reading Festival! I bootlegged the 4 of them, but the best one was the Mean Fiddler!

@@ScottishTeeVee Sure do! I’ve got hundreds of them from all these gigs I went to in the 80’s! Mostly “underground” and post punk bands. Just audio bootlegs, no videos, for my own listening pleasure….and the fun of getting away with it. A lot more dangerous back then than it is today. Could easily get a kicking if the bouncers caught you! Keep meaning to upload them before I drop dead and they all end up in a skip!

@@terrypussypower Oh yeah dangerous times. I hope you have arranged for the tapes to be saved incase anything happens to you? I only put these videos on YT, because I'm at the age where friends are passing faster than ever and if I go, my kids would dump all the videotapes, so I thought I better share them before I go😆

5:42 The “Cleaver Pocket”?? I was sure Gibby was gibbering his usual load of acid-inspired gibberish at this bit….Pants designed by Black Panther leader Eldridge Cleaver with a “pocket” in front to hold his “man handle”??? Obviously nonsense….right? Only it’s true! Look it up online! It’s hilarious!
