Middle aged METAL guitarist here. I was way younger back then. I got talked into seeing this band with the jacked up name that I had never heard of before. I went to this fly by night bar in Trenton called City Gardens in Spring (sometime between March and May) 1987. Butthole Surfers. I'm standing there arms folded waiting for these people to do something. I had seen RUSH, AC/DC, VAN HALEN etc...at the Capital Centre in Landover MD so I knew my way around a concert (or so I thought). The lights went out. The band came on. Never saw two full drumkits used in such a way. The 2 drummers were literally pummeling the kits. The bass was MOGWAI levels of loud. It started to hurt my chest about 3 songs in. Gibby Haynes began throwing photocopies of cockroaches into the audience. Just follow me. It hurt to stand as close as I was standing to this band but I wasn't backing down. They have this super cute Juliette Lewis type stripper up on stage wrapped in saran wrap and dancing with flip flops on. I feel like I'm tripping. Gibby Haynes got the mega📣phone into the microphone thing working overtime. Guitars bass and drums are crushing. Saran wrap girl still dancing. Gibby Haynes starts messing with a can of Ronsonol lighter fluid, dropping some of it on the drum riser and on the cymbals. I'm about 4 and a half songs in (I think) when someone in the audience, maybe the club owners Randy Now and/or Tut (I have no idea what his real name was) called the Trenton Cops. By the time the dust settled, The Surfers had been physically manhandled and removed (while they were still performing) from the stage at City Gardens, I had managed to attend (and survive) my first "Alternative" show in New Jersey, and had a life altering experience I will never forget. I still love Metal. I always will. But those crazy BHSurfers really taught me something about Rock N Roll. They lived their performance right on the edge (OK probably both feet way over the edge). ROCK ON SURFERS. AND R I P TERESA NERVOSA. You all made a lasting impression on me.

At one point apparently Siouxsie Sue from Siouxsie and the Banshees was rolling around on the floor with Gibby, trying to wrestle the shotgun out of his hands. Anyone who'd met Gibby couldn't be certain it wasn't loaded with live ammo. As it was it was just extra-loud blanks called "poppers".

Gibby Haynes must have some supernatural powers to make it out alive, after all these years of constant touring and terrorizing crowds just like this one!! I made it to one Butthole Surfers show back in 89/90 , and not even twenty minutes into the show there were fireworks going off inside the small venue. Gibby nearly burned down the club with everyone in it by pulling a torch and a can of hairspray from behind stage, skipping around like a maniac while dodging security. What a beautiful freak!

@cdroid I was also at a show where Gibby was shooting the shotgun and it was salt pellets! I was right in front of the stage in the mosh pit. When the show was over I went back to meet my friends at the car and they said what's that in your hair? And it was little tiny bits of salt all in my hair. This was the Castaic Lake show when StoneTemple Pilots opened. There are some songs taken from this show on the live cd "The Hole Truth And Nothing Butt"

WOOOOHOOOOO !!!!! Mad respect to all involved, thank you for posting !! I was lucky enough to catch the very first Lollapalooza in San Diego, Southwestern College. If I remember correctly the lineup was Ice T w/ Body Count, The Butthole Surfers, Nine Inch Nails, Siouxsie & the Banshees, with Jane's Addiction closing the show. If I missed a band, I'm sorry but that Tuinal just knocked me the fk out. I was surprised how the lineup was stacked. I know it was Perry's thing, but to see Siouxsie in the daylight outside, just seemed weird, & I love them. All the bands were great, it was a fantastic day, shared with Rick & Shea. I had already seen all these bands before, except the Banshees. And even though it was a blast, I enjoyed the earlier smaller hardcore shows than the bigger outdoor "rock" concert vibe. And the Surfers show in DC opening for the DK was much more amazing back in '84. 2 drummers, Gibby with his bullhorn, Paul playing a tuba. But it was the 1st time I saw them. I guess what is missing is that Do it yourself, who cares if you don't like what we play, Fk off & die attitude we had as early punk rockers. I'm grateful for the internet & the work people are putting into music these days, but don't get hung up on the views, comments, likes, etc. If it comes from the heart & you play your heart out, you'll earn the respect. And if some clowns don't like it, fk them, do what you do & the right people will follow you. Sorry, but this just floods me with such great memories, this beatup old man is just really excited. Thanks again for posting & everyone involved, from the spectators, techs, cool security, & musicians!!
