There are multiple ways to track button clicks with Google Tag Manager and GA4. All require creating a GA4 event tag in Tag Manager. This video tutorial shows two different ways to configure your button click trigger (with a link click trigger and a click classes trigger) and how to create and test your button click event tag.
Let's get to tracking those button clicks!

@@tvhax , you'd use the CSS Selector (provided I'm thinking about it correctly) to create the custom event in GA4 that will fire when the button you want to track gets clicked. Then, you could look at using that event data on those button clicks as part of a "Path Exploration" report in GA4 so you can look at visitor journeys that begin or end with that click. You could also create a custom segment based on people who have clicked on the button based on that event. Here's an article on Path Explorations: www.rootandbranchgroup.com/ga4-path-exploration/ Good luck!

Hi Nizuka, Can you help me understand what you mean by your "assistant tag"? Is this in Google Tag Manager preview and debug mode or elsewhere? I'd also confirm to make sure you've configured all the click related built in variables in Tag Manager. That part is super fast if you haven't done it yet (just a process of toggling them on with a click). I'll stay tuned to hear if you have further info you can share. Thanks, Zack

So I got all of that, but then how do I create an event for that GTM tag that you just created on GA4? Or will it appear automatically in GA4 events once the tagged button is clicked?
@rooted-digital
@rooted-digital Жыл бұрын
Hi, MW. The GTM tag you created actually *is* the event. As long as the tag and trigger are configured properly (and the container is published) you should see the new event data once your tagged button is clicked. Sometimes it can take 24 - 48 hours for the data to start showing. Is it showing now? Keep me posted! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. : ) Zack

Thanks for the video! Is it possible to do button click tracking without access to Google Tag Manager?
@rooted-digital
@rooted-digital Жыл бұрын
Hi Deehi, I'm not aware of how to do this without GTM. The one exception would be if you had a button that went to an external URL (off your domain). For that, you could create a custom even using the GA4 interface by modifying the existing 'click' event to fire on only that specific link click. This blog has information on that tool if you're interested: www.rootandbranchgroup.com/ga4-custom-events/ But in general, I'd say that Google Tag Manager is going to needed for almost all button click tracking scenarios that I can think of.

Hi watched all the content you gave me and thank you very much for that! Subscribed as it helped me a lot. The only issue I have is that my website now has 3 snippets: 1-Analytics 2-Tag Manager. You mentioned below that now with GA4 I didn't need this. I followed you GA4 setup and Tag Manager, but couldn't figure out. I connected TAg Manager before like you advised but then the triggers wouldnt fire. Everything else would work with debug mode, like, scroll event etc.. I could only make this work adding both snippets for Tag Manager. For those coming from UA and who had a snippet for Analytics in the website code, what should we do? Can we delete this Analytics snipet and replace with GA$, even though Analytics when migrated didnt do this?Cheers, thanks a lot!
@rooted-digital
@rooted-digital Жыл бұрын
Hi Danny, I'm not sure I completely understand your question but I am going to do my best. In terms of the GTM container code snippets: these both must be on your website. In terms of the GA4 code snippet, this also must be on your site. HOWEVER, it can either be hard coded into the site OR it can be pushed to the site through your Google Tag Manager container code. You don't need to do both (nor should you). It is possible to have GA4 hard coded on your site and not use GTM to send your GA4 code to the site...but personally, I think it's easiest to only have GTM hard coded on the site and then use GTM to send the GA4 code snippet to the site. In terms of any lingering UA code snippet, you can keep that for now (if you're still using UA in conjunction with GA4) and then delete it when you no longer need it. I still have UA on my site, but will be removing it on July 1st.

@@rooted-digital thanks very much! Did help me! I create another property from scratch because I was afraid to delete the code that GA$ added when I migrated from UA. It was UA snipett on my website, however upon entering Analytics it asked if I wanted to migrate to GA4 and I said yes. Therefore, I guess it created this code. Then I went to GTM and followed your tutorial, so I got confused what to do with this code if I proceeded to connect GTM like you mention and not by adding a code. Now I was afraid to delete this code. lol sorry, seems confusing.

@@dannygrio I think I understand. I didn't realize you had done that "automigration" that Google is now pushing. It's actually not a great approach (my opinion) and it's frustrating that Google is pushing it like it is great. I think you'd be fine to get rid of what had been associated with that auto-migrated account. But I'd probably wait until you're all the way done with UA just to be safe. Honestly, I haven't done this myself so I'm not entirely sure. By the way, if you're curious, here's some perspective about why this auto-migrate option might not be as great as Google seems to suggest: searchengineland.com/ga4-auto-migration-opt-out-393786 Good luck and Godspeed to you! @@rooted-digital thank you so much for the reply. I had UA like everyone and Analytucs snippet in my website. Then I did this and the automation added on the snippet the correct GA4 ID. Since I went and checked. Then I did your tutorial and got confused with the GTM snippets even hard coding. So now I don’t know if I can delete GA4 snippet. I will do after June I guess as I saw that even though it has ga4 Id UA is still getting data. That should be because of the auto migration. Last if I create a new GA4 property I will need to do long before deleting the ga4 that I migrated too. Because of date. And I have to do all tags again. So this was a bit frustrating. @rooted-digital
@rooted-digital Ай бұрын
I could be wrong but I'm guessing the tags not firing is because those clickable elements are in an . You can validate that in a couple of ways: You can right click and inspect that element to open chrome dev tools. And / or you can just test the tag in GTM in preview and debug mode. When you investigate the specific action that should be triggering the tag (but isn't!), you can see what elements of the trigger are not firing. To resolve, you could search for something like "ga4 tracking" or "gtm tracking" but you should know it can be complicated. I've never done it myself. The other option would be to find a way to move on without this being as part of your measurement plan. Wish I had an easier solve. Best wishes to you.

So if you go to “Engagement” reports and then “Events” you should be able to see it there. @rooted-digital
@rooted-digital 7 ай бұрын
That sounds very interesting. My first reaction is that it has something to do with your trigger or is simply a lag in the new event (sometimes there can be a delay of 24 hours or so when creating new events). Your trigger and tag for button click tracking should be completely unrelated to your generate_lead event. Unless, of course, you are somehow using the same trigger for both events. Is there any connection in your trigger between those two events? Also, I'd check to make sure you didn't accidentally pause your tag for the generate_lead event. Best of luck in resolving this mystery. It is confusing for sure.

Hello there. From what you're describing, I think the issue is that you haven't set up your GA4 Configuration Tag in Google Tag Manager. The good news is that this should be pretty quick to fix. First a side note: the "none-manually set ID" option you're referring to is what you'll need to use in GA4 *Event tags* if you don't set up your *Configuration Tag*. Here's to set up that tag. - Go to Google Tag Manager - Go to Tags - Create new Tag - Click into Tag Configuration to create a new tag - Choose "Google Analytics: GA4 Configuration" as your tag type - Enter your "Measurement ID" for your GA4 property in the available field. You can find this in GA4. Go into Admin and then click into your Data Stream in your property settings - Choose a Trigger to go with your new tag (page view trigger firing on all pages) - Save - Publish your container Now, when you create GA *Event Tags* (including the button click tag), you'll be able to select your GA4 Configuration tag, which will associate your new event with your GA4 property. Let me know if that does it for you. Good luck!

That's it. The event data should show up in your GA4 reports within 24 - 48 hours. Conversion tracking is different in GA4 than the goals in UA. But if you want, you can "mark" your button click tracking event to be counted as a GA4 conversion. Inside of button text and outside of button text could you you explain what it is and when to use it ?
@rooted-digital

For some buttons (like the one in this video) there are different elements that are triggered when clicked. If a user clicks on the inside of the button (where the text is) one element is triggered. If a user clicks on the outside of the button (outside the text area) a different element is triggered. To be able to track ALL clicks on a button like this, we need to account for both the inside and outside of the button. That’s what we review in this video. There’s also a way to track buttons that go to specific pages using the URL of the button click. We review that alternate approach as well. Hope that helps!

Hello there! There is often a lag period (24 - 48 hours) from the time of creating the event and event parameter in GTM until the event parameter populates in the drop down in GA4 when you're creating the custom dimension. If you check again, it should hopefully be there now. If you have a link click trigger that is based on the Click URL to an external URL off the domain, I'm not sure why the tag wouldn't fire when the Click URL is set to open in a new window. Is that your situation? Ps. When testing in GTM, I'm holding down CTRL when I click on any links so that the button click opens in a new window regardless of whether it's set to open a new window or not.

I’m glad you’ve uncovered some of the problem. But that’s certainly frustrating if your event data still isn’t showing up in your GA4 reports. I hope that changes soon. Thanks for explaining this, that was helpful! If I want to track the click on a display ad (our own internal ad), would I follow the same process? The click on the display ad opens up a landing page with an opt-in. I want to be able to know: 1) how many people click on that display ad specifically and arrive at the landing page 2) from the people that arrived to the landing page by clicking on the display ad, how many of them actually opt in (opt-in takes you to a URL: thank you page) I don't want to use Click URL as the trigger, as I'm using different placements for this ad with the same destination URL. I want to know how many people click on this specific element. The variables in GTM don't give me Click Classes or Click ID. How can I track it then? The display ad I'm trying to track would be the "Replace disempowering thoughts with this" display ad in the middle of the page (green). recoverywarriors.com/the-daily-growth-habit/ Thanks a lot!

Hello there! I understand why you don't want to use click URL as the trigger for your tag in this situation. That makes sense. With Click Classes and Click ID not working, you'd be limited to finding something else. But of course, you knew that anyway. This is not super helpful, but I'd say that there is probably something else that would uniquely identify the click you want to track, and that could serve as your trigger. Sadly, I'm not smart enough to suggest what might work (others are, but not me) without getting into the backend of your Tag Manager account and testing and playing around in preview and debug mode. I'm sorry about that. The good news is that once you have isolated the button in a unique trigger, the rest of the process is pretty straightforward. Not sure if you already have an event created for the email opt in, (it should be pretty quick if you don't), but you could use that event in conjunction with your to-be-created button click tag to build a Funnel report (in Explorations) or a Path Exploration report that starts with a click on that button. Here's a guide to using that Path Exploration report if you're interested: www.rootandbranchgroup.com/ga4-path-exploration/ If you continue to be stumped with isolating the button click you want to track and decide to look for outside help, I do occasionally take on small projects like this. You can get in touch with me at www.linkedin.com/in/zackduncan and I can share how the process works to see if you'd be interested. Wish you all the best. Zack Ps. Your site is awesome. What a great mission. Thanks for what you guys do in making this world a healthier place.
