He came to my school to perform this live about 7 years ago with Sarah Kay, gave me his book and inspired me to fall into my love of reciting poetry when everyone told me it was a weird thing to love. I still recite to this day. So I was happy to be reacquainted with my memory of him in my suggestions and his cadence brought me back so many years. Thank you Phil

he was taught that repeating words makes them lose their meaning. So when his parents divorced he used repetition of words to try and devalue they're meaning and effect on him. but as time went on he began to stutter and this made him experience the meaning and depth of the words that hurt him in excruciating way then he would have experienced them- had he not tried to devalue his situation. He is basically talking about how we can never run away from issues that were hurt us. how everything comes crashing down and we are left to experience pain in a much greater way.

Semantic Satiation - is a psychological phenomenon in which repetition causes a word or phrase to temporarily lose meaning. Phil so beautifully explained this interesting phenomenon

PHIL KAYE - “REPETITION” My mother taught me this trick, if you repeat something over and over again it loses its meaning, for example, homework homework homework homework homework homework homework homework homework, see, nothing. Our lives, she said are the same way, you watch the sun set too often it just becomes 6pm, you make the same mistake over and over you’ll stop calling it a mistake- if you just wake up wake up wake up wake up wake up wake up wake up one day you’ll forget why. Nothing is forever, she said, my parents left each other when i was 7 years old, before their last argument they sent me off to the neighbours house, like some astronaut jettisoned from the shuttle, when i came back, there was no gravity in our home, i imagined it as an accident, though when i left they whispered to each other i love you, so many times over that they forgot what it meant, family family family family family family family family- my mother taught me this trick, if you repeat something over over again it loses its meaning, this became my favourite game, it made the sting of words evaporate separation separation separation see, nothing. apart apart apart apart apart apart see, nothing. i’m an injured handyman now, i work with words all day shut up i know the irony, when i was young i was taught that the trick to dominating language was breaking it down; convincing it that it was worthless i love you i love you i love you i love you i love you i love you i love you, see, nothing. Soon after my parents divorce, i developed a stutter, fate is a cruel and efficient tutor, there is no escape in stutter, you can feel the meaning, of every word, drag itself up your throats-s-s-s-s-s-s-separation, stutter is a cage made of mirrors every what’d you say, every just take your time, every come on kid spit it out, is a glaring reflection of an existence you can not escape, every awful moment trips over its own announcement again and again and again until it just hangs there in the centre of the room, as if what you had to say had no gravity at all. Mom, Dad, i’m not wasteful with my words anymore, even now, after hundreds of hours practicing away my stutter, i still feel the claw of meaning in the bottom of my throat, listen to me, i’ve heard that even in space, you can hear the scratch of an i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i love you.

I first heard this 6 years ago, in high school. I loved this so much and left a big impression in my heart but now I'm halfway in college and life got harder. Listening to this again takes me back when I was so naive to life, when this was just a story of someone else that I found interesting but now, Repetition hits hard. I hope we wouldn't forget why we woke up everyday

it never gets old, you see. it changes in subtle ways only to get better. and no matter how often you listen, this doesn't lose its meaning. ♥

This is my favourite poem. Because I can relate to it too much. "Marry Me" "Marry Me" "Marry Me" "Marry Me" "Marry Me".... He kept saying on repeat for 2 years it lost its meaning. Each time followed by verbal abuse and it left me confused. Why is he asking me to marry him and how can he abuse me at the same time. I built a shell around me to hide from the abusive words. But it also blocked his desperate words of marriage. I was stuck in a limbo. The love of my life.. Asking me to marry me and abusing me all at the same time, on repeat. I asked him to stop. He stopped for a while. But I could not bring myself out of the shell out of fear of abuse. I kept asking for time. He left me and got Married to someone random: He just wanted a married life. But... I just wanted a married life too! With Him! That's all I wanted for 2 years! Your mind can play tricks on you. While the word marriage was numb to me... And only his abusive words echoed... Suddenly it was the opposite. Suddenly the shell broke. And I wanted marriage. In desperation, I begged him to come back, it was too late. He was the love of my life. I don't know why I did what I did.

Three years ago I’d never fallen in love and now I’ve fallen in puppy love. But still it’s been so long since I’ve stopped wondering what if

I did too and I think I did a pretty good job cuz I won the first prize. Ofcourse the poem is so good it deserves more appreciation.I was so worried as it was my first, thoughts like what if someone yells back 'l love you' or 's..s...s..separation' made me sick and then I thought about Phil he goes to so many places performing this poem and there I was overthinking and so I went in gave his intro and performed the poem absolutely with no fear and the experience was surreal, of course the audience had a chorus to say but it did not affect me at all. I even e-mailed Phil Kaye about the whole thing and he was like 'I am honoured you do my poem'. He is such a humble man and a great poet.
