It Will certainly suit some people and a new vehicle with the latest software is definitely the best choice for those people in my opinion the 2015 to 2020 suits nobody either get a 1KD will make sure if the remap tomorrow from 2020 suits your needs you might as well get a new one but I hope you’ve got plenty of money and hope it suits your needs.

The 2020 on 1GD isn’t just a re map they improved the engine. Larger turbo, improved head , better injectors , piston rings and more . The updated 1gd pulls my boat better than my 1vd v8 and uses a lot less fuel. Fit a trans cooler and the trans is fine.

I have the updated 1-GD in a 2022 Fortuner, so far so good, I find it a fantastic engine with plenty of power and good on fuel and my fortuner feels way more nimble than a Prado due to lugging 200kg less. Love the channel however i wish you would include Fortuner content too as there is a growing number of us who love and own the Fortuner these days. 👍

Well Anthony I have a hilux kd a prado kd vecause of you and a prado gd they are all wonderful...I listened to the end ..your towing advice was spot in.. I towed horses with an xt falcon ..double horse float load and learnt how dangerous it is ..was..you maybe ranted but people believe him...well done..I've had no issues with Toyota's all hwy kms since 1982..more than a million k s love the channel

Just a small point, we do truck logistics and I don't have any issue with it being 2.8L displacement 4 cylinder engine. In fact Hino uses this engine in their Hino 200 series internationally. All our 3 tonne tippers are relatively small, under powered 4 cylinder diesel turbo engines, none are 6 or v8 beasts, yet they all have over 300,000kms on them or more and carry full payloads of 3-5 tonne day after day, 6 days per week. Modern engines can be much smaller in displacement and last a very long time working very hard, maintenance is key. That's my 2c, different perspective. Love the videos👍👍

The simple reason why Toyota program the transmission's torque converter to unlock when ascending hills is simply to allow the engine rev higher. If the torque converter stayed locked whilst climbing up hills, the EGTs will skyrocket. And over time, this will lead to cracked pistons. So the transmission programming is designed to protect the engine. Better to let the engine rev a bit more , which in turn lowers the EGTs. The other reason is that the higher revs under load will generate far less soot than lower revs under load. So there's less soot clogging up the DPFs when the torque converter unlocks. Unfortunately, this generates a lot of heat for the transmission fluid. Best to tow in a lower gear, say S4/S5 rather than stay in D. And let the engine rev higher. It will run cooler and produce far less soot. Less soot = less fuel used to perform burnoff.

Thanks Anthony Our 2021 seemed to have a slowly dropping coolant level between services, cause not yet found (10-15 mm on the expansion tank Totally agree re gearbox so happy it locks up and you can relax We have towed our 2.75t caravan a lot and it feels like the poor man’s 200 series, pulls beautifully and we average 17-18 per 100 for our trips. Our last trip we found it wanted to climb in coolant temp (above 95 on the scan gauge) on longer hills even if we held it back in 4 th when the ambient temp was above 32C. The Auto trans pan temp seems to sit around 100C in the pan towing it not towing with the gear box locked up, a lot hotter than I would like Thanks again for all you valuable info

Hi Anthony, great content on your channel. I have 2018 Prado, and toyota dealer has re-mapped the auto shift pattern. Drives heaps better, this was just picked on a regular service couple years back. Lock up works well, and doesn’t shift back on slight inclines like it used to. With this in mind, there must be dealer serviced prado’s and hilux with the remapping already done. Fyi, my previous 2017 hilux was woeful. Barely every went into 6th gear. Regards - paul.

Thanks Anthony, loving the dialogue and will keep an eye on my 2022 built GXL. I absolutely love my vehicle with plenty of trips planned and hope to get many years of touring from it. I just want to make a comment with respect to diesel fuel and future availability. Working for a truck OEM for well over twenty years, I can give a couple of insights to the future of transport as it heavily relies on diesel availability. The average age of trucks in Australia is 16 years, and we all see many trucks on the roads far older. The last three years has seen record volume growth on new truck orders, particularly in the heavy duty long haul segment. I have personally witnessed R&D of both electric and hydrogen built prototypes and can tell you heavy duty trucks will transition to hydrogen as electric power trains will not get the distance in Australia as the rail system can’t support the current freight task. There a couple of truck brands with light duty electric trucks, again 130klm reach on a full charge, so only works in high density environments. Guess my point is that the truck industry needs to be supported for at least another 20-30 years as there is no infrastructure or incentive to move quickly into new fuel option, so diesel will be around for longer than everyone thinks. Keep the videos coming mate, I’m a big fan. Cheers

Hydrogen is definitely the long term solution. Electric is nothing other than a short term feel good solution. Electric vehicles require rare minerals in large amounts leaving behind massive destruction and polluting the local area, you still need to recharge them using a grid that's over 76% fossil fuels, you can't use them in remote areas, they're a recycling nightmare, etc. Hydrogen can be produced without fossil fuels cleanly or by utilising methane from sewerage plants which only produces 50% of the co2 you get from fossil fuels equivalents utilising the Hazer process. You basically take all the servos around and convert them to Hydrogen stations and solve the remote travel issues, plus it's the most abundant element in the universe! It's never ending!

I do high kms and tend to keep my vehicles for around a decade so drive Toyota. 2002 SR5 520'000kms 2002-2011 2011 SR5 670'000kms 2011-2022 2022 Prado 120'000kms 2022-present None are perfect, I have replaced more alternators than I care to remember but none of them have left me stranded. Prado is the first Auto and not sure I like it, has a weird spot at about 1500 rpm under light acceleration, you can't force it into higher gears and won't drop into 6th (overdrive) until you're north of 120kph. I will wait another few years to pass judgement on the 2.8 reliability but power wise the 1GD is streets ahead of either 3.0. 1KZ=315 NM 1GD= 343 1GD= 500NM. As @Seaslayeradventue says below the Latest 1GD engine will blow the socks off even a tuned V8 70 series.

Now Anthony at the beginning you said you were not going off topic in this video. OMG off topic you did go. I love your videos and information but you rambled in this one, topic to topic and then back again. Mate, I have a 2022 Fortuner, would buy another in a heartbeat. Very happy with it compared to the other options and will flip it just before warranty runs out. I only use it for longer runs we have a small petrol older Toyota for running around. Keep the shiny side up and compared to some of the other brands who have major major issues with a few km on them a maintained Toyota is a gem.

I disagree that There’s not that much difference and we can agree to disagree I’m not sure what you’re disappointed about it’s talking about the engine in a Prado not a Fortuna to be quite honest you’re lucky there’s any replies it almost KZbinrs don’t bother replying to anyone they don’t even read the comments all they’re interested in is the bottom line I actually read every single comment and a lot of them get the thumbs up and the love hard and sometimes a reply which is a lot more than any other KZbin channel gives perhaps you took it the wrong way it’s a one-liner quite simply it’s about Prado’s not Fortune is and that is that

Love your videos Anthony and have followed your advice with many mod's (and not mods - catch can) to my 2017 (pre-face lift), GXL, (3rd row seats removed) Prado! Can you tell me, nostalgia for the 1KD aside, is there a better new vehicle, with similar capabilities, available today, than the Prado? With all it's short coming, I can't think of anything better, and so, try as I might, I can't find a justification to replace it..

Hi Anthony always informative. An old school question. Ive seen several positive reviews about Prado 120 Grande petrol from 2004. Im from Cape York and fuel price us already high we dont mind. To be used for long runs to Cairns to get supplies we are a small business and run diesel hiluxes for work. Appreciate your feed back.

Desde españa en europa este tipo de vehiculos estan desapareciendo a gran velocidad un pena soy propietario de una unida gx co. cambio manual y el retardo del turbo se nota bastante comparado con otros modelos hace falta kilómetros para acostumbrarse a las peculiaridades de este motor En cuanto a dpf adblue y medidas de anticontaminacion estamos mas que acostumbrados en europa no hay escapatoria para ellas creo que es el ultimo verdadero 4x4 que llegara a nuestro pais una pena por políticos corrompidos Un gran canal muy buen trabajo enhorabuena

Thing is I’ve beaten many 1KDs and Ford Rangers in straight line with a 2016 1GD. It’s the gearbox. It’s like it always launches in 2nd or something. Even overtaking, believe me, go down into 1st and shift yourself @ around 3,700rpm you’ll see a difference

Also found with the 3.5t towing on the hilux isn't really possible with the gvm/gcm. Once you put a canopy bull bar, ect. You pretty much hit your gcm with only 2.5t towing. Havn't looked at the prado specs but assume it would be similar. Something to keep in mind.

Yes, yes, yes. My 22 Prado sucks especially going up hills. It is a lack of power while maintaining high gear and making a constant Tom Tom Tom noise. I went to the dealer, and the Master Tec said he cannot recognize the problem which my wife could.

Brother has a 1GD. just over 100,000 ks, and has had 2 timing chains, multiple problems with DPF plus 1 camshaft replaced.

Towing something that is heavier than the tow vehicle is insane, it should be illegal and anyone caught doing it should lose their license instantly. If your vehicle weights 3000kg, you shouldn't be towing anything heavier than around 2200kg, even that is pushing your luck for safety.

Im scarred after owning a high KM 1VD so I'm waiting to see about the 2025 Hilux. The engine options aren't fully confirmed but a 1GD and 1GD MILD hybrid seems to be on the table. Im hoping by then the 1 GD will have all the faults resolved by then because I want something from new and hopefully own for another 10yrs is that a thing anymore? My old 98 1HZ that I sold is still cruising around should I maybe just buy that back 😂

Was your suggestion for a second hand prado 2020 onwards? Im hard of hearing and the Closed captions didnt get the year properly. I drive a variety of prados at work and some seem lifeless and others feel like your in a dam race car. I suspect the newer the better.

If you’re not buying a 1KD buy a new Prado but I’m not suggesting buying a new one either all depends how much money you’ve got if you’ve got plenty and you’re doing a lot of highway driving buy a new one good for towing and good for traveling at the speed

I had a 1KD and traded it for a 1GD. Biggest mistake I ever made. Now the missus drives a petrol VW Tiguan. Seems like it had 2 overdrives and couldn't stay in 6th gear if there was a slight headwind. Gutless is correct.

That is correct fifth and sixth gear in the Prado are both overdrive and almost impossible to keep the torque converter locked in either pathetic set up

Mate the newer engines need more careful maintenance and you can’t neglect the maintenance. The older engines had a better tolerance for abuse.

Make no mistake the the trans calibration in the 21 Prado is utter garbage. You talk about hating things about the car, this is one of the worst trans management on the road. Really dissapointed with Toyota on this one. I have said this will be my last Prado but I dont know what i would get next. Should have kept my 2015 with the 1KD. Cheers.

Hi even being a modern engine 2.8--3.0 ltr for towing how much ......LOL Towing 1600kg its embarrassing both motors . Some utes have diesels at least double the size,, wonder why .

I want to buy a second hand hilux in New Zealand. I'm a builder by trade and hunter at heart so you can imagine what I'm going to use it for. Question is n70 or n80 (kd or gd) I'm leaning towards a 2014 with extras but I can't stop wondering about the new bells n whistles of the n80. From a reliability/cost affective point of view what do you think would suit me, I feel a 2014 sr5 5m will do me well. Just after some reassurance.

It's all good and well to tell people to stick to the 1KD or urge people to listen, but the fact is that the 1KD was replaced by the 1GD and unfortunately, if you want a brand new or late model Prado, the 1GD is the only option. I have a 2019 Prado and it's just clicked over to a mere 43,000km, spends 98% of the time in the bitumen and the only off road use is the occasional beach run to a peaceful spot away from traffic. The 1GD motor is ample for an unladen Prado. But then people put another 500kg of weight in it, in the form of a bull bar on the front, wider rims with bigger, heavier tyres. Roof rack/tent/awnings etc, an extra spare on the back, fridge in the rear etc etc and suddenly it's hauling an extra half a ton, not including the kids, the dog, the big fat-assed missus who never did lose that weight gained while pregnant for the third time, with her 50kg make up bag and trowel to apply said make up... Oh, then there's the boat behind it or caravan that's almost as heavy as the Prado itself....

I have had problems with this model in hilux.DPF problems living in NT working out bush driving up to 900ks at 70ks hr because of a derate as dpf blocked Replaced clutch twice now have aftermarket heavy duty also replaced turbo as seal let go and screwed turbo and I've only done 160000 😵‍💫
