Excellent content. Thanks Anthony. With all these accessories on the market and intense marketing it’s good to have someone who cuts the crap and provides the information one needs to make a well educated decision and stay clear of 90% of aftermarket nonsense.

Like most 4x4 accessories, the only real benefit is to the manufacturer and the retailer of the bolt on stuff. But because there's "one born every minute" they continue to thrive.

Firstly, I really enjoy your videos. My late father was a mechanic and from watching your videos, you and he had similar perspectives on vehicle maintenance and modifications. I love that fact you own and thoroughly test prados which have few, but quality mods and do thousands of kms off-road. I think it challenges people who have ‘all the gear’. P.S. all of your videos is making me consider switching to a Prado!

I'm an automotive design engineer & if I didn't live in Victoria & drive the high country with multiple deep water crossings, I wouldn't bother having a fully sealed snorkel on my vehicle. If a raised intake delivered all the advantages claimed, we would have designed them into vehicle rooflines long ago 👍

I just did the Gibb river Road with a snorkel fitted to my 2014 Hilux, ur right a snorkel is in the worst possible spot for dust (we were in a convoy of 4). I fitted a snorkel sock oil filter and went through heaps of dust during my month away. regularly oiled and cleaned and worked perfectly, saw no dust in the air box.

I agree snorkels are designed for dust and to put the intake in the cooler air. But they have been around for ages too. Before these neato pre cleaner air boxes. If you want to do the water crossings I think you should plug up the holes. I work in mining an can tell you those one way valves or ducks bums need changing out every 3 years or so. They stop sealing and go hard.

Perfect timing on this one. Installed a snorkel two nights ago and didn’t seal any of the holes in the air box for the exact reasons you said. Water has to be able to escape from somewhere.

I've drenched my air filter in the middle of nowhere from that 3mm hole in the bottom of the airbox. No snorkel intake piping was dry. The second that hole goes underwater and you are under boost it blasts into your airfilter like a sailor on shore leave.

G’day Mate Yes I generally agree, but there’s idiots that never learn weather they have a snorkel or not I’m 64 have a mechanical background, I prefer a snorkel But like the fellow said you don’t need it , I’d say if you’re keeping your 4wd for long term put one on I think that the snorkel can actually help with air pressure into the combustion chamber , otherwise the motor is sucking , it’s a bit like being on a ventilator It does provide better economy long term I don’t disagree with the video at all , but hey my GU Patrol 4.2lt turbo has over 1 million Ks on it , still has great compression and 9 kilometres per litre if not thrashed With the new diesels a big trip is to the corner store , not sure about getting back Long in tooth I know but bloody reliable

Well I just finished watching this, went outside to check the airbox and would you believe it, the 3 small internal drain holes are full of silicone. Glad I watched this. Also been running the uni oiled snorkel filter and it's been keeping a lot of the dust out of the box. Might also replace the paper airbox filter with a oiled unifilter airbox filter as well and see how that goes with keeping the intake cleaner

It's a mixed bag with me, I've heard from mates that their work Ute died after going through dust constantly on farms, then where I live it's beach driving and everyone's bogging their utes and flicking sand everywhere and have had snorkels save their motors so I really don't know. I'm neither for nor against snorkels it's just comes down to personal experience like you said and your choice.

Thanks for the great info on the aircleaner box & design. Re dust levels at different heights, there can be many different factors at play. ie soil particle size & source of dust generation. Vehicle generated dust with fine particles will behave as described. Wind generated dust with larger particles will behave differently. With higher levels of dust closer to the soil surface than at Snorkel height. If travelling in convoys is your thing in bull dust conditions a Snorkel will catch more dust. On most wind swept beaches a Snorkel will perform better. As it will in wind swept roads or paddocks with larger soil particle size. I hope this helps, love your channel. Cheers Michael

I thought most decent brands of snorkels have some kind of water separator near the top to prevent water from rain etc going down?

I need a snorkel, some of the river crossing i do are above bonnet. However i totally use an oiled up sock when going anywhere dusty, keeps the air box and filter shmicko. Also ripped out the stupid airflow restricting "separator" because as you said the drain is siliconed up. ;) For people driving around town meh, wank factor.

The one way valve on my LN106 HILUX gave up the ghost and could not source any replacement or any ideas for a replacement so I used a HILLS 5L Garden Pump Seal instead. Some advice was to seal it up with something but diesels have to BREATH and those older units are still made from steel, so you don't want ANY moisture build-up. I've had some reputable people tell me BOWL Filters don't work? I wonder if they've ever driven machinery in a cotton shed? Maybe then, they might understand if they have to clean the unit every 15 minutes!?? That's where you find the good operators and NOT just steering wheel attendants!??

So if I go through a deep river above the air box but have a snorkel will those little drain holes cause the air box to fill up or will the pressure stop it?
@insaneomcleano2 жыл бұрын
The airbox is under a vacuum when you are boosting it blasts the air filter like a water pistol as soon as the hole is submerged and you plant boot to get out of trouble.
@terisafarleigh56182 жыл бұрын
I thought the same until after a few beach trip Ford told me I had sand in air box as intake is in wheel arch maybe not as well protected as a prado fitted snorkel no more sand in airbox

It probably had a bullbars once you’ve got a Bullbar which is also not required it opens up all the crap to go with your air intake picks up the air once you have a Bullbar you then need a snorkel note as good as No bullbar no snorkel

I've often wondered why people fit a snorkel for increased wading depth when their alternator remains very low down in the engine bay. Whilst bash plates and getting the perfect speed right for a nice bow wave can prevent some water getting into the engine bay, if you have water high enough to get into the original air intake, I would imagine you're on borrowed time.
@insaneomcleano2 жыл бұрын
Wading depth is 700mm. Thats 100mm below the top of the tires. Not very deep I would say
@benjaminprince64242 жыл бұрын
Come's down to circumstances I guess, e.g. the placement of Ford Ranger alternator (high) vs an Amarok (nearly scraping the bloody road)

Everyone knows the Toyota air boxes are notorious for leaking dust into the engine, don’t really trust them tbh. Snorkel and custom airbox are what I went for, just my opinion
@malcolmlewis32392 жыл бұрын
Do you find that if you have a bull bar (and no snorkel) and the guard liner has been cut to fit the bull bar, that the dirty side of the filter gets dirtier quicker than say a stock vehicle ?
@Fourby4Diesel2 жыл бұрын
Yep After damaging the Toyota and putting the chunk of steel on the front it opens up the dust to come in and then you’ve got the vehicle dynamics changed it does not drive as well and chews more fuel
@michaelconnors53392 жыл бұрын
This comment is interesting, I serviced a Hilux the other day and was trying to work out why the bottom of the air box was full of sand, the car didn't have a snorkel but had a Bull Bar, thinking about it now I wished I had looked at the guard liners to see how poorly they were cut, I bet that is how the sand got in and it was so much it was rather scary, when you are blowing sand out of the filter...
@olsenstoursandtraining3492 жыл бұрын
That's why in our rally cars in the 80s, we used to run our airbox piping into the inner guard. Some vehicles are of course piped differently and snorkels are a better option. What people also don't realise is they do not permit the vehicle to run underwater indefinitely. 4.2 Nissan Patrol is a good example, The hose clamped hoses may be may be waterproof but other areas of the airbox are not. Trying to waterproof it is stupid. Learn when not to cross water, how to safely do watercrossings and no what the risks are.

As a mostly touring vehicle, I see no need for a snorkel. They look great, but scream “All the gear and no idea.” I have no plans to cross any river over the height on the intake or to submerge all the electrical fittings. But if appearance is your priority, then go for it.
@benjaminprince64242 жыл бұрын
I hardly think a snorkel is an "all the gear and no idea" mod

If it's a touring vehicle then it's probably got a bullbar. If it's got a bullbar, it needs a snorkel.

Noticed you mentioned the airtec snorkel. Is there a problem with the brand? I own a 79 and am considering an airtec as there is no extra cutting and diy is possible. What are the downfalls of installing a snorkel as your video didn’t really explain? Sorry I might be missing your point.

@franko7072 жыл бұрын
Sorry that's not quite correct. It's really a 'raised air intake', it does source air from a 'cleaner' location if you're getting dust from a typical snorkel suction location then you're too bloody close to the vehicle in front of you! As for water crossings, that should be self explanatory to yourself. I agree with the fact of not playing with the water release/drain, a few of those silly stainless systems don't have any which is plain dumb.

A snorkel is meant for the same reason we wear them swimming.... Driving through water. A snorkel is not for dust. Seems you missed the point. "If you've got water up to there you've got bigger problems", nah mate, it's called a water crossing. Plenty of people do hectic deep crossings when they have the right gear
