For US shoppers, you can get one of these (without redline, sun+sound, SuperCruise) for nearly $20K after $7,500 federal tax rebate. Maybe even a few grand less depending on what state you live in due to local incentives. It is the best bargain in the EV world as long as you can avoid markups (gotta spend a lot of time shopping and consider getting one shipped to you from out of state). I've got the Bolt EV, and it has been a workhorse -- we've put on 130,000 miles in four years with zero issues (other than the one day it took for recall battery replacement). The ONLY downside to the Bolt family, which they did not address, is the mediocre "fast charging" peak rate of 55 kW. If you're a frequent road tripper, avoid this car. But if you have a gas car (or faster charging EV) for road tripping, this makes a great and affordable addition to your stable for commuting. I took a 1,000 mile road trip in the dead of winter in my Bolt EV. It is totally achievable, but it's a slog for sure. If you can't charge at home or work, also avoid this car. As long as you know these things going in, this is the best bang for the buck out there.

Glad to see someone putting the Bolt under pressure. I currently commute 52km (32miles) to work one way, work 6 days a week, so I'll be putting 35,000km (21,747 miles) on the clock annually. So glad to see within 4 years I should be good. I do hear the brakes have a nasty habbit of seizing up due to lack of use😅. Have you had any issues with this? And how often do you service the brakes?

@@BremboT I have not had this issue, but I've also not had the brakes inspected. Because we're driving about 33,000 miles per year I think they're getting enough mild use. I know my wife uses the brake pedal more than I do and she drives it the most, so, I think they're getting exercised. Some recommend performing a hard brake once a week to clean off the rotors. Personally, I think GM should address the issue in future cars by having the blended braking system occasionally use the friction brakes (when not necessary) just for cleaning the rotors. It should be able to keep track of the last time friction brakes were used, and force their use with a certain frequency. That's definitely not the case in the Bolts, but I hope they've thought of this in their newer generation Ultium platform offerings.

@Mike Farrington Wow! That's amazing in 4 years, no brake issues. I live in Canada, and we have a lot of road salt and other de-icing chemicals on the road, so perhaps that's where the issue is. I plan to do an annual brake clean and re-greasing of the slider pins due to the rough winter months. I'm only 7 months into ownership. Thanks for the feedback.

@@BremboT Living at the 45º north parallel, we get an occasional rough winter, but we haven't had one since getting the car. We get salted roads, but not nearly with the same frequency as more northerly locals. I really do think the high yearly mileage daily use has really helped our brakes avoid maintenance issues. Also, our area isn't without its hills. I bet those living the plains regions may also have a higher likelihood of running into these issues.

My parents got an EUV with one or two of the basic packages, and their's was something like only $29k, but then when you factor in the tax incentive, it became a $22k brand new EV with 250 miles of range. It's crazy good value. Also, I'm just over 6' in height, and I've never noticed an issue with the knee room in the EUV.

Except did it? Little trick about the "tax breaks" if you're already at or below zero tax owed. You cannot apply the EV tax reduction. And now that most EV's no longer qualify for the already tiny amount. There's really no discount 😕

I purchased Bolt EV 2 months ago. I love it for my 10 mile round trip work commute. It is far roomier than the Ford Focus Hatchback I had before. Love the smooth, zippy driving, around the city. Chevy installed Level 2 Charger in my garage with purchase. Seems like perfect city commuter to me thus far.

Compared to my previous car that avg 28mpg those same miles at local $3.50/gallon =$433 so I've saved $357 thus far.

Absolutely, we paid $22k for ours 4 years ago, and have already put on 130,000 miles. I estimate that we've saved ~$15k in fuel (based on price difference between gas and electrons), oil changes, and brake jobs. In a few more years, this car will basically have been free. And if I were lucky enough to have had free at-work charging, it probably would have already paid for itself. As a frugal person, I like to brag about how much it has saved me (while other brag about how much extra money they dropped on the nicer EVs out there).

I worked at a car rental company, and we had a ton of these little bolt euv, I can say it's a great vehicle. A amazing entry level electric vehicle for the price range, I drove a ton of vehicle but to me it did feel very fast and had instant torque like any electric vehicle. Handled well, I enjoyed the vehicle. I did not spend enough time with the vehicle to come up with any cons though.

Long story short, this is the most family friendly and budget friendly EV out there. I have the EV and I love it. It uses about $60 of electricity per month I put about 1000 miles on it and it has enough room for my kids in the back and with the flat floor a 3rd kid is fine too. What the EUV does better is leaving enough room for a rear-facing car seat in the back. The storage is fine for just about anything errands would require and with the trunk cover in place it's a flat load floor. I think larger wheels would look nicer, but might affect the range, which would be a bit of a shame since it's a great range for the price. The only feature they missed out on was a passenger seat that folds flat. It would have made it possible to get some of the large Ikea items that won't fit otherwise. It drives very nicely, with great pickup, and average handling. Test drive one, you'll like it and GM will pay to install the fast charging line and future-proof your home.

Hambone is a big dork. This is a great entry EV precisely because it’s relatively simple and honest, handles well and safe, and doesn’t recreate another overweight SUV. It’s basically a butch little hatchback. My wife has a 60 mile roundtrip commute 3 days a week. Her old Taurus needs things fixed on a regular basis. And to run kids to school or store, I don’t need to warm the planet my 400hp V8 E550. Fire Big dork, he can work for Hyundai lol.

I ordered a Bolt EUV solely because it cost USD$33k for the base Premiere which doesn’t have a sunroof, but has the rear view camera, ventilated seats, and heated rear seats. It is to be a work taxi, and my kid can ride in the back seat if she has to. I live close to where Ford is building Blue Oval City. I work in construction. If I decide to work out there, I’ll definitely drive up there in a Bolt EUV and ask if I can charge while I’m at work. Ford raised their prices on the base Lightning and Mach E, but none of those offered ventilated seats at the same price nor the same range. I like the Bolt EV too, but I hope something better WITH APPLE CAR PLAY will be available. Just saying, GM is just as dumb as they always were. I thought they’d turned the corner and started building cars for normal people, but they shot their load when they cancelled ACP and AA in 2024. Bad GM Bad GM go to your box BAD GM BAD BAD BAD!

I get the comparisons to other EVs, however as mentioned by others, if you can keep yourself from checking every option box, you can get one of these pretty easily under $25k in the US after the tax rebate which puts it into a class of it's own for EVs. For those of us looking at new cars in the mid $20s, I would have appreciated a comparison to cars in its price bracket, say a Kia Soul/Seltos, Chevy trailblazer, Honda HR-V, or whatever. That to me would be a more useful comparison. Would it's acceleration have felt more impressive compared to those cars? Would it's plastics still feel cheap? How does it baby compared to other cars in that bracket? As always, I love y'alls reviews, and I understand you have to review the top trim model that Chevy sent you, but I wonder if your review would change drastically if it were the base model up against other economy cars.

Just picked up one myself. A EUV LT Redline with pretty much all the option packs. Traded in my 2018 Volt with 60K miles on it and got the $7500 tax rebate. Out the door cost was $10K, with no sales tax because my state does not charge it for EVs.

I think that was with the EV which is slightly more efficient than the EUV. Also, it wasn't the longest range available for the Model 3 and EV6 (which makes it an even more fair comparison in my opinion). The bolt beat them all, and cost half as much as the next cheapest one.

I bought 2023 Bolt EUV Premier without super cruise and sun-and-sound package in January for $32k ($35k OTD). So far after driving it for around 4300 miles, I am very pleased with its performance. It is pretty spacious from inside despite looking small from outside. Front ventilated seats are superb for warm Florida days. It gives me around 4.5 miles/kwh in mostly city driving and I can squeeze out around 290-300 miles per full charge although I usually charge it when the battery is halfway down. GM got level-2 charger installed at my home at no cost to me, which was a saving of around $600-$1000. I just have two complains: no rear AC vents (although back seats are heated) and bad location of 12V and front USB outlets that block the spot of wireless phone charger. So, if my dashcam is connected to the 12V outlet or USB, I can't put my phone on the wireless charger. With Tesla's recent price cuts and Model 3 RWD becoming less than $40k ($39,990 to be exact), the difference between the premier model and Model 3 is only $7500. If you add sun-and-sound package and super cruise, that difference becomes less than $2k. In that case, it will be wiser to go for Model 3 RWD although its interior is not as user-friendly as Bolt and there are no ventilated front seats. However, Model 3's drive is much sportier than Bolt and highway ride is much more commanding and for those reasons it is worthwhile to buy a Model 3, which also is available to be bought unlike Bolt for which you have to wait for months. Not to mention that you don't have to go through Chevy's greedy dealers who put ridiculous markups or charge you tons of money for frivolous dealer-installed options. Fortunately, I found a dealer around 50 miles from my home that didn't charge me any mark-up or other fees and I ended up paying sales tax, less than $200 for registration and less than $500 for dealership fees. Other dealers that I contacted were all greedy trying to take advantage of the market.

had a '21 bolt premier and MSRP swapped into a loaded EUV. Both have their merits and comes down to preferences. I like the 360 camera, the 3" of extra leg room in back is nice when hauling stuff and the slight width gain is noticeable inside, was not a fan at first of the sun roof, but it honestly opens up the interior, supercruise is ok, but I personally would not pay for it if doing it again. It is a great bang for the buck. we also recently got a MY LR and it is in a whole other league, is it worth $16k more....maybe and depends on use case. I just commuting hands down bolt wins

BOLT EUV is the perfect car for around town. I can easily get 4.5m/kW around town and 3.8m/kW on my ~250 miles round trip to Sacramento @~ 60-70mph.

The best way to launch the Bolt is actually leave the TC on. Press Sport mode. Left foot on the brake about half way. Floor the accelerator pedal with right foot. You will see the output kw read about 8kw. Lift the brake pedal and the car will jump forward and you will notice the power output read 140 kw. It can get from 0-60 under 6 seconds.

Bought an EUV, it's a sublime value at MSRP in the USA if you qualify for the rebate. $28k - $7500 federal tax credit and - $2000 CA state credit A sub $20k electric car with 250 miles of range. It's fun to drive and doesn't have a lot of compromises (assuming you don't need to fast charge it). Gas prices are completely irrelevant!

It’s the perfect EV to cart two kids around the city. I appreciate a reviewer actually adding a car seat and putting someone fairly large in front to show that it works well. Stuffing two car seats into a regular Bolt doesn’t really work for a 6’ tall driver.

Agree with Jakub, the Bolt EV should have just moved into this model. Would be more into this vehicle if they offered it in AWD and had better fast charging, it’s one of the most efficient EVs available in Canada right now. Might run into the same issues as Jakub though with where the knee hits.

I'm reasonably certain the Bolt EV will be phased out shortly. I'd be surprised if it lasts beyond the 2024 model year, and I assume they will shift all production at Orion to the EUV.

I think they'll keep the EUV as the bargain option with little-to-nothing done to it at its midlife refresh (generally, the 4th year after debut). For its refresh, maybe they can up its DC charging to something a little more respectable, perhaps 85 kW.

Cars like this help make people a bit more ready to transition to an electric. In terms of pricing the Bolt and the EUV are nice cars for what they are. Lower starting price, decent range, slow charging which is a Hangup for road tripping but it is very efficient with the energy it does get. And a thermally managed battery (after the recalls the batteries are good) Cars like this will help spur competition in the more compact EV segment which will be better priced, and generally more efficient since they won’t be as heavy and easier to make aerodynamic.

I picked up the Bolt EV and that corner by the right knee is no joke. I have pushed back my seat to a less comfortable position and use crude control with my right foot far left all the time. I can only imagine how destroyed my femur and knee cap would be in an accident because of that corner.

I got my 2021 for $23000 plus tax and then did a MSRP swap because of the battery recall and now have a 2022 Bolt EUV that is freshly restyled inside and out. It is an unbelievable deal and I save $$$$$ on fuel. So there is no competition in this price range. Just lucky

Great review, guys! I'm surprised you didn't mention the placement of the brake lights. THAT is the deal breaker for me. Other drivers are going to expect the taillights in the normal place to light up when you brake. Such a huge design flaw....and seems a bit dangerous as well.

I feel that something you guys glossed over during your review was the charging times/ rates for the Bolt. One of the reasons I'm switching from the Bolt to another car is because it's max DC charging rate of 55 kW is way below others like the Ioniq 5. It's a dealbreaker for me, if I wanted to do any kind of road trip, and something I wish car reviewers would talk about more in EV reviews

EV focused car reviewers do talk about the charge times. The purpose of the bolt is not road triping it is more of a daily commuter with something that you can charge at home. It's actually charges pretty fast at home one of the faster home chargers has 11 kilowatt charger on board.

Even the upcoming Equinox maxes out at 120-150kW. That's unacceptable for an EV debuting in 2024 . I feel Chevy doesn't value its customers time, and that's a problem. I know the Ultium platform supports 350kW, which means Chevy went out of their way to purposefully make the Equinox slower. I think they're attempting to make fast charging a "premium" feature on more expensive models, which is a HUGE mistake. A Honda Civic takes the same time to refuel as a Porsche, perhaps even less time. Even Hyundai and Kia (which used to be brands considered lower than Chevy) have adopted 350kW on all their newer models. When you think about it, the Model S is almost 14 years old, yet it's charging speeds will double Chevys brand new Equinox EV?

@@BradWilson1969 yeah thats definitely a deal breaker if you can't charge at home with a lvl 2. You should ask the landlords to install a ev charger. They have tax incentives for that. And it will help them attract more tenants, and I'm sure there's incentives with electric companies. Its really a win win for them

@@BremboT I think 150 kW peak is perfectly acceptable for the new lineup, especially the more affordable ones like the Blazer. The Lyric goes up to 190 kW. At 150 kW, as long as they can sustain that without much ramping down below 80%, you'll get a nice area-under-the-curve and it'll be just fine even for road tripping. The Ioniq 5 and its siblings have a great peak rate when the pack is low and warm, but they can't sustain it. I assume that GM's new cars will be able to hold that peak rate to about 75-80% instead of absolutely blasting the juice early, then ramping down to cool off. I think GM is playing it conservative so they can keep the warranty costs low, which helps keep the initial cost to consumers low. They could probably, technically, let these things juice up at 200 kW, but a certain number will fail early. GM already has a black eye thanks to LG's shoddy batteries. So, yeah, 150 kW will keep you at the chargers for 30 instead of 20. But personally when I road trip, I drive hard for two hours then take a good 30 minute break for bathrooms, meals, and stretching. To each their own of course, but I don't think every car has to have 800V 250+ kW fast charging -- not if we want some of them to be affordable.

It's an affordable EV for like a one or two person household as a daily or as second vehicle. So with something at this price and incentives, you can really save money vs paying for something well north of like 55k.

I've found in Canada I can buy a Bolt with all the bells and whistles for the same price as the other base model EV's mentioned (no sunroof, no Bose sound, no Super Cruise). I think it is a good value. I've driven a Bolt and didn't notice the complaint regarding his knee.

I honestly don’t care about infotainment in modern cars. All I do is turn on the aircon and turn the volume up and down and just a few simple knobs and buttons covers it all. Even for directions, I use my phone.

We have a Bolt EV and just didn't see the point in the EUV, personally. You get 6" of extra passenger space (primarily in the back), and the trunk is nearly identical (you're right about that). I'm 6'1", and I fit comfortably in the back of the Bolt EV too, so why EUV? The EUV comes with three features that the EV doesn't: glass roof, vented seats, and Super Cruise. I didn't care much about those, so EV it was. 🙂 The EV is also quicker off the line (same motor, lighter car), and with the better range, it was a no brainer. After the tax credit, the EV is a freaking amazing value right now too. Edit: Preconditioning when you start from the app just conditions the car to whatever you have the temp set to in the car. So, if it's hot, you get AC, if it's cold, you get heat. Makes sense to me. Also, a few stand-outs: - The Bolt has some of the better suspension I've driven in an EV - 1 Pedal driving is very, very smooth (equal to or better than Tesla, and much better than our Mach-E) - The 360 camera isn't just there, it's really really good (at least in the EV version of this car, which is an option in the 2LT and it's also better than our Mach-E) - The toggle switches are AMAZING and I love them

If you want the car to be the exact same temperature every time, then preconditioning to whatever you last set it to makes sense. But if you want it colder or hotter sometimes (also, different humidity levels make the same temperature feel different), other cars with preconditioning let you set that from the app. It’s not like the Bolt has a physical dial controlling the temperature, so it’s a little weird that you can’t just change it in the app.

@@bubbledoubletrouble I mean I get it, but I just set the temp to something I like and forget about it year round (and we live in Cleveland, where we have 3 or 4 seasons in one week sometimes, and it gets super dry and super humid). If it's too hot or too cold when I get in, it's usually by 1 or 2 degrees, which I just adjust when I get in. It's such a small inconvenience, I consider it to be beneath notice as an owner. I do get it, and it'd be nice, but I doubt people would use it much.

Bought a 23 Bolt EV last week. 7500 tax credit is great and the dealership had the tax form ready to go. If you are willing to pay more upfront and get your credit next year it is good to go. Like others say charging is a little slow. I use fast charging with EVgo. Good luck getting your hands on one. This is the last year for the Bolt. Chevy is preparing for a new lineup soon.

I love my Lt EUV; in BC we get a $4K rebate on top of the $5K fed rebate. It's so quiet and smooth, and it's one of the least-expensive EVs on the market.

I bought one for commuting in, and its quickly become everyone's favourite car. I did not buy the top trim, and got the car for $42k, minus $9k in tax breaks and it ended up being about $37k out the door which was way cheaper than anyone else's EV. The Nissan Leaf with Standard range (200k) was the only other car close in price, and this is far superior. The EUV is 6 inches bigger.. and those inches are all in the back seat, making it easy to haul around 4 adults without knees in the back of seats. Plenty of pep, quiet and pretty comfortable. Chevy also paid for an electrician to come and install the charger. My Gas cars sit at 42,000 km for a 6 year old vehicle, and 8,000km for a 4 year old vehicle (both significantly more expensive/luxurious models) because we just dont drive them if the bolt is available.

Saturday will be six weeks since I ordered mine. I test drove a 2023 Hyundai Kona Electric. Along with a 2022 base model of this. I researched some of the others you mentioned. However, this qualifies for a 7500 dollar rebate for federal, and 2500 dollar rate for state (NY) so the price is really no where close to the others. You’re absolutely correct about the marketing. I currently drive A 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I’m 6’0 and have always preferred sitting higher up. It is not the same height as my Jeep, though it’s close enough for me not to feel like I’m totally sitting on the ground. One of the main reasons I’ve been waiting for the EV market to expand. I didn’t want a Tesla besides the model Y which is way more than this. Also I feel this is way nicer for passengers. I sat in the back of the Kona, I literally couldn’t fit, both legs and height. This, I could do both. Head room was a little tight, though I could. So if I ever have to ride passenger in my own car, I could. As well as my slightly taller friends. The Hyundai also didn’t offer back, heated seats. I felt this had better tech then the Hyundai, with the 360 overhead camera, super cruise, review camera. Where I am located (Western NY) a good amount of the highways I drive on quite often, are all mapped out. So I will say, location is pretty important for the super cruise feature, as well as after three years, (Chevy gives the first three free in the US) you’ll need to pay a 25 dollar subscription fee. I’m not a fan of that, since I am already paying for the feature. At least I’ll have plenty of time to figure out if it would be worth paying for? 🤷‍♂️ The down side with this I feel is the slower charge times. However, with Chevy paying up to 1250 to install a lvl two charger where I live?! Hyundai didn’t offer that. I drive 50 miles a day, to and from work. This will be the perfect commuter for me. I will miss the all wheel drive I have in the Jeep. One complaint is I wish Chevy made this in all wheel, though again, price point. At least with the smaller tires, it’ll be cheap to buy a nice pair of winter tires. I spend over a grand for my Jeeps. So bigger isn’t always better. Next years blazers and other larger platforms are going to cost a couple thousand more than this. . . . For the base models. This is fully decked out, for 30k US? I’m just drooling, waiting for mine to come in. Finally, this has been around for a while, Chevy has been making EVs as long as Tesla. Volt, Bolt EV, now this. Yeah, the recalls sucked. Though extremely rare and Chevy has at least proven, it can produce a reliable electric product, and corrected it’s lone error. Oh! And the Hyundai Kona Electric is based off of a gas version body. The Bolt EUV is a stand alone body. Meaning it was only designed to be an electric. Unlike like the Kona, small but noteworthy information.

To brake boost these you’ve gotta be off brake and then apply brake until it stops creeping. You can preload like 10kw max off a break boost, also in sport mode you can get up to 215 hp

Hey guys, I recently purchased the Bolt EUV Redline edition. When I set the target range around 80%, I see the target miles to be about 240. Although I have never relied on the target battery charge percentage bcz I charge at public stations, is the battery target range reliable and does it get you the range it shows? About 240 at 80% battery? I live in Chicago and this is during the month of May and June.

I spent a few days over the winter playing with the idea of getting a Bolt EV or EUV to take some of the day-to-day wear off of my Fiesta ST and as far as I know, the (non-supercruise) differences between the EV and EUV are mainly 6 inches in horizontal length (pretty much exclusively for the backseat, apparently makes a big difference if you carry adults/teens/etc) and a very different suspension tune, with the EUV being much plushier. Also the EV is .50sec faster to 60 which is noticeable. If you're weird and dumb and you want to go aftermarket with your relatively slow electric car the same suspension kits will fit both models.

The Bolt is a good entry level ev with alot of standard features. It has a good price point for those unable to spend above 50k for a car. The only real downsize is the charging speed

I've owned a 2019 Premier since brand new. Recently, I test drove an EUV, just out of curiosity. I wouldn't say the difference is radical. The only real improvement I've noticed was that panoramic moonroof. Otherwise, I see no point in switching to an EUV. Rather, I'd wait for the next-generation Bolt that GM promised to roll out in late 2025.

this car gets a lot of hate. My aunt bought one new a couple of years ago. Everyone in my family chimed in on how much it sucks. I finally went to go see it last weekend and got to drive it for a day. I really loved it. It's got great power, the interior looks and feels premium, and it's just fun to drive. I also like the way it looks. It was surprisingly small in the trunk, but the front was very comfortable.

Fun review guys - as usual! When looking at EVs I think it’s useful to point out use cases for the vehicle. I have a Mach E, but for the Bolt it has a limited fast charge cap around 60 kWh. It’s really a car for driving around town as a commuter car I think, when you can charge it at home every couple of days. It’s not really for road trips and not really for any spirited driving. I think the cost reflects it as it’s only $38K USD in top spec plus in the US still elig for the full tax credit. I would never buy one but maybe for my mother in law? Or maybe for someone who wants a somewhat comfortable affordable EV around town. Ioniq 5 is going to be $10K more. Also complete agree Chevy should kill the EV model and just produce the EUV there’s no need for the EV model.

I own a 2022 Bolt EUV and love it. I do agree that it's really a city car and that's fine with me. I really see it as a hot hatch. I would like to know if here are differences between the 2022 and 2023. I didn't get super cruise as it is a city car and I wouldn't trust self driving anyhow.

1:26 Yuri is exactly correct about this and it goes with the whole current auto industry for North America, not just EVs. Manufacturers have brainwashed consumers into thinking these lifted hatchbacks are SUVs, let alone even CUVs so they can charge more money and it's literally ruining the car market. All's 99% of CUVs on the market are just compact hatchbacks with a slight lift and slightly wider/ thicker bodies. My current daily is an GT Sport hatchback, and it being a hatchback means it handles greeeeat, just like any car, hatch, or wagon would compared to a higher profile vehicle. It's quicker than most CUVs, has better driving dynamics, better features than most, and on top of all that it has more cargo room and pretty much the same interior room as 99% of those CUVs on the market rn. So you get all the benefits of a hatch/ car while having literally more cargo room and same if not better interior room. But the car companies have brainwashed everyone into thinking a slightly higher vehicle = more safe and in turn can charge way more for basically a hatchback. It's ridiculous and idk how people are so easily swayed by this.
