Just wanted to make a quick comment. I worked for a large transportation company for many years. One of the mechanics in our shop was talking one day about having engine problems on his boat, I guess it was an outboard. Anyway, I will never forget him saying after he tore into the engine, he found a piece of that aluminum foil type sealer that is on the top of that and other oil and antifreeze bottles, etc. A chunk had not come off completely or he had accidently not knowingly dropped it in the oil and then it went into the engine. Since that day I have always made sure I get all of it off or as much as possible because that stuff is tough around the edges.

I am a retired ford transmission tech and I remember how the diesel techs never ran out of work and always made the big bucks . The 6.0 when it is running well it's impressive but one thing is for sure it will have issues. The later the model the better off you are, the 07 was a better year. You seem to be doing everything right and I wish you the best. How's your transmission?

Thanks much R C when we bought the 07 (new), as the last 6.0L I was hoping they'd worked out all of the issues. Of course a few remain but overall our truck has been a solid performer. Transmission has been great!

I would like to ad no matter what powerstroke be sure to use the motorcraft filters and oils. I know everyone has their preference but I have a healthy 6.4 fully stock and well cared for, and made the mistake of using a off brand oil filter, nothing bad happend, just didnt do as well. Fords are very picky but like our ladies we love, if we keep them happy they will keep us happy in return.

Great post Sean! With some of these engine oil additives there can be some components that will settle to the bottom of the bottle. I always pour in about 1/2 the bottle, then re-cap-n-shake, then add the rest. I've found that even some motor oils will have components that settle to the bottom as well. I have an '06 GMC Duramax LBZ(Gray Wolf) with 75,000 miles as our trailer tow-boy; no engine/fuel issues, knock wood. Although I haven't yet used any Archoil products,(using other brands), I will try them out when I use up my current stock of additives. Hope you and your lovely bride have a great season out there this year! If ya get down to SoCal, give Agua Caliente County Park(just East of Julian,CA) a try. One of our favorite destinations, but closed from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Happy trails to you! Dave-n-Trish in SoCal.

I am not a Chrysler Man but i will agree with you on the Cummins engine. For A diesel engine they are one of the top.But they all have problems with injectors. You really have to watch your fuel. Changing your fuel filter is really necessary. I think i will stay with gas.
@idomake4429
@idomake4429 8 жыл бұрын
If you haven't had that thing "Bullet Proofed" yet, tomorrow is the day. Get that EGR upgraded, the oil system upgraded and the head bolts replaced (with studs). Here is the chain of events. The bypass valve in your oil filter housing will fail, the EGR cooler will become your "oil strainer" it will then begin to leak water into your combustion chambers. One morning you will go out to start your truck and it will have enough water in the cylinders to cause a hydraulic lock. If you are lucky the starter will fail to crank the engine, if not, one cylinder will hit and the engine will then be completely shot because you will have bent one or more connecting rods. The other scenario is that the head bolts will stretch causing a head gasket leak, allowing water into the cylinders etc etc etc. By all means, if you discover the truck is consuming coolant and you can't find the leak, you are well down the road to some serious pain. Ask anyone of us who has one of these and we will tell you how this engine can go bad. Yes they have tons of pulling power, but let that cooling system get out of control and you will learn what a love/hate relationship is really like. Also, 117 k miles is barely past the breakin period on a diesel. Keep it in good shape and a half a million is quite doable. Nice Vids, best of luck, safe travels.

Unfortunately the 6.0L design was saddled with some poorly engineered environmental "features" (EGR cooler) that were not ready for prime time. The stiction issue is also real; however Archoil offers easy cost effective treatment. 👍

Huh... I've only put friction modifier in a differential. Heard it's used in automatic transmissions sometimes as well. But in gasoline? Weird... I guess whatever works!

The friction modifier goes into the oil... the fuel mod complex into the diesel. It does work (on our 6.0L it does anyway).

I'm old school from before there was this Archoil "medicine" for sick (malfuntioning) injectors. The injectors worked for +100,000 miles without this archoil I'm assuming. My question is, why not change the old injectors with new ones? When parts no longer perform as they should the fuel don't need additives, the parts need replacing. I don't get it, what am I missing?
@LongLongHoneymoon
@LongLongHoneymoon 8 жыл бұрын
Well, I guess the main reason is that this solves the problem for a cost of $40 instead of $3000. Is it as good as having brand new engine components? Probably not, but either way the problem goes away. This tech sheet explains better than I am able (NOTE: I have no affiliation with Archoil whatsoever. I just have been impressed with how it works in our truck.) www.archoil.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/DieselPowerHandoutSEMA.compressed.pdf

How do you do for mileage pulling the Airstream? Have you made any other mod's to improve performance? I have heard of others but I can't remember all of them. One mod was larger exhaust pipes and different muffler. Thanks for another great video!
@LongLongHoneymoon

When our truck was NEW we got 11.8 MPG...so I guess that is the standard. As our engine aged, milege dropped into the single digits...it was really getting BAD. I'll let you know what happens this autumn but our towing mileage has been back in the 12 MPG ballpark.... non-towing mileage about 17 MPG.

I have a 03 F250 CC LB with the 7.3 and I get 14mpg pulling my race car trailer which goes about 7K loaded and is a big white box. I would have guessed you'd get better mileage pulling that airstream. Are you a lead foot?!?
@LongLongHoneymoon
@LongLongHoneymoon 8 жыл бұрын
I'm not really a lead foot, at least not when towing an Airstream. Archoil has helped our MPG quite a lot. Before Archoil, our MPG with the 6.0L was dropping into the single digits! Last year we saw it bounce back up to much better levels. I'll monitor our fuel economy on this trip and see what happens.

Terrific recommendation Sean! I see lots of comments below about bullet proofing your engine but have no idea what that means. Why did you decide on a diesel rather than gas engine truck. @davidinsocal3032

A Davis: Like Sean and Kristy we chose a 3/4 ton diesel('06 GMC Duramax) because of the TREMENDOUS torque and pulling power, without having to worry about engine strain like with our old gas powered truck. Also getting better fuel mileage, and if we want to buy a bigger trailer, we won't need to buy another truck. Yes, diesels can be a bit more expensive for regular maintenance items, but the diesel motors can also last many 100's of thousands of miles with no major issues, with proper maintenance of course. There are certain years/makes of diesels that have had their issues, do a LOT of research like we did before you decide to buy. We bought ours 'gently used'. Take care!

Thanks David! Very helpful information. I see folks talking about "bullet proofing" their diesel engines. Do you know what that means? I guess I've got a lot of research to do over the next year before we jump into RVing! Thanks again!
@davidinsocal3032
@davidinsocal3032 8 жыл бұрын
A Davis: From what I gather from the posts here, 'bulletproofing' is something that's done to the 6.0 liter Ford Powerstroke Diesel. Bill Hewitt @ powerstrokehelp.com/6liter/6-0_main.asp will give you the heads-up. One other advantage to owning a diesel puller are the braking advantages used with engine braking/transmission braking that can far extend the life of wheel brakes, and also gives peace of mind when going down steep/long grades. Our Duramax uses the turbo and the Allison transmission to assist in the braking, and we very seldom need to use the regular brakes when going downhill.(although it took some getting used to, in order to get it right) I'll even use the engine/transmission braking when not towing. Some of the older diesels also have less emissions equipment, which may or may not be a maintenance issue as well. Good luck!

I honestly love my 6.0l, yes it's got design flaws, but getting the engine bullet proofed has fixed the flaws and now it's reliable and would not consider getting another truck. Other trucks have their own issues, lift pumps, injector issues, etc just to name the competitors. I'll leave this here.

@ Long Long Honeymoon, Remember... "Bulletproof" means it is done by Bullet proof diesel in Phoenix Arizona (bulletproofdiesel.com) . There is also a good guy outside of Atlanta who "dealerproofs" your 6.0 PSD. Powerstrokehelp.com. As you state in your video, you want the real thing not counterfeit. I'm a tech by trade (not Ford) however I do own a 7.3 and a 6.0 and in my reasearch with both shops I mentioned above I can tell you they care about the quality that exits their door. All makes have their own issues. Working in a shop where all diesel models are driven (the big 3 plus euro stuff). For the production years of 7.3 and 6.0 the fords hold up better (remember, my opinion). Less front end issues, brake issues, A/C issues, interior issues. There are pros and cons for every make. I typically look to see what the common failures are, add up the common cost of repairs and then shop.
