Nice video Kirk. It's a shame how some people dismissing this monitor because of the PPI aren't understanding how the viewing distance helps mitigate this problem. I've got an LG 5K for work but because my desk is deep, it's harder to see a difference in sharpness compared to my 27" 4K at home unless I bring the 5K closer towards me. So I think for people with a deeper desk like yourself, the 32" LG is a strong alternative to consider. Also, while the Studio Display does have a webcam, better speakers/microphone and a better build, are these really a priority when buying an external monitor? I know the Studio Display is a gorgeous display but I'm glad videos like yours help show that there is better value out there.
@DesignedbyKirk2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Charles, really appreciate your thoughts! It's great to also know you've used the LG 5K, its a wonderful monitor (and so is the Studio Display), but all your mentions about viewing distance at a larger desk using one monitor is important. As mentioned, I use another webcam, have studio speakers, so all those features in the Studio Display aren't interesting to me at all. I love Apple's industrial design, for the products I touch and feel, not overly keen on spending all that extra $$$ on metals I'm not going to touch. Really glad you enjoyed my video, thanks heaps for watching mate!

apple natively scales to 5k (retina) or 2.5k (non retina), that's why it matters

Pls understand that Value is subjective LG is an eyesore. I wud never have it on my table. It diminishes my home decor. Its bezels are unsymmetrical & it is plasticky The apple display is plain beautiful- even when switched off it just feels nice to look at it. And the other monitors have matte screens - plain yuck. Apple nails product design & the only company that pays attention to PPI. Also they have stores where you can experience tje product. Many others just have online presence or their offline stores don't have the models we want to check out. That is why I find value in what they offer

Sorry, not comparable: 5k on a 27" monitor is 218ppi, 4k on a 31,5" monitor is just 140ppi. Huge difference. In other words: the LG has only 56"`% (!) of the Pixels of the Studio Display, and those are stretched on a surface that is 1,37 x larger than the Apple one. Just a different class of monitor. 4k monitors are generally much (!) cheaper than 5k ones, let alone 6k.
@DesignedbyKirk2 жыл бұрын
Fair point, but I consider to them to be comparable as they are both displays, many would consider purchasing for their MC. There are barely any 5k panels out there (only 2 to my knowledge) and with regard to PPI, you’re very right. However. Remember viewing distance is larger with the 32” panel is further away, so the lower PPI is ok. I’ve used the panel for a year, and still think it’s gorgeous to look at. Comes down to what you like, and yes of course, how much you want to pay :)

Have you actually seen a 32inch 4k display? 32inch is the max limit for a desktop monitor and you have to sit quite far away from the monitor, you cannot spot a single pixel. Otherwise I like Apple charging 1600USD to their users with that meaningless '5k' tag vs other 4k monitors on the market.

To me, sharp text is the most important thing. 140 ppi just doesn't compare to 218 ppi. It has nothing to do with distance and whether you can see pixels or not. Higher ppi means easier for the eyes, less eyestrain over long periods of looking at the monitor. But you're young and probably have 20/20 vision so it likely doesn't matter.

There are so many alternatives, yet nothing matches with what Apple has to offer you. I gladly pay more for the extras I get, and let's not forget the premium that comes with them. I used matte monitors for years before the Pro Display XDR came out and never was satisfied with them, hence why I hopped on them as soon as they came out. I mean, sure they aren't that bad. But hey, there's a reason why they're "cheap". I know this isn't about the Pro Display XDR but they're not that different really.. The Studio Display is a great monitor and fits right in a minimalistic setup and I think the price is about right. As a designer and photographer myself I would highly suggest to opt with an Apple display if you're a Mac user, even when the prices are steep, especially the Pro Display XDR price. That being said, I couldn't go back to a normal monitor even if I wanted.

It might've been a concern for old macs, whose iGPUs were just horrible to the point they couldn't drive the native resolution well. Scaling a 4K content in 1440P that was rendered in 5K would punish the computers. But the new macs have decent iGPUs to drive any displays. Concerns about performance drop due to scaling should be less of a thing. I am using a 27in 4K display and I've checked out the studio display in store. It did not wow me by its display capabilities. I can tell that texts are sharper for sure. But if I don't look at them side by side, I won't notice very much. For professional photographers, of course, more pixels mean more details for adjustments. I feel like at this price point; I would like to spend a little more for HDR capabilities, which will make a difference. I think a lot of consumers would like to buy a product that will last for years, so they are very cautious about their purchases, which is totally understandable. But if they go out and check out the other options and look at the price tag, maybe some of the things on paper do not matter that much than they have originally thought. Anyway, just a thought.

Nope. Give me the 5k display. That alone is worth the difference in price. The bigger monitor means nothing with a smaller resolution. I use the full 5k and you can fit more content in the 5k display in that 27” monitor No one seems to make another 5k monitor even close to the quality of this one even at the higher price. The only competition is the Lg 5k from Apple and I own that. I hate it. It’s wobbly. Cheap. And the Bluetooth disconnects too much. I often find it disconnecting while I m working and it disrupts my flow because it pauses my iMac too while it’s disconnecting before it reconnects. I HATE THAT I m a software engineer. For me the extra 300 for This monitor are WELL WORTH IT for something that I will likely have for like 7-8 years if not longer In fact I will eventually have 3 of these. So the LG 5k monitor isn't good?
@eminjungle11 ай бұрын
It depends on what resolution you use with the 4k display. You could go with the native 4k full resolution (which is acceptable for a 32" monitor), the text will be smaller, but you will have a lot more screen space than the 5k one scaled for retina. The text will look better on the 5k, but on 4k kept at native resolution you could get a lot more space. It all depends on what you need, this 4k has 140 ppi, studio display has 219 dpi, a macbook pro has 250 ppi, while an iphone has 450 ppi.

There are a few questions that your video on the LG 32UL950 did not clarify: (1: How does this monitor compare with the 32-inch LG 32UN880-B? (2: One reason I would look at either the 32UL950 or the 32UN880-B: both are 4K, high-quality-image monitors, and both offer the built-in ability to pivot 90º for use in "portrait mode" (excellent for DTP work) (3: Silly question, but newer drones and action cams tend to shoot in highly compressed video streams of 5K and above. How will they look on 4K monitors like the 32UL950, 32UN880-B or the Apple Studio Display?
@DesignedbyKirk2 жыл бұрын
Great questions regarding the monitor. Unfortunately I don't have that monitor, so it's hard to do a genuine review / comparison. However looking at those questions 1) Aesthetically the ergo monitor is more focused towards integrated ergonomics with the stand, although in my opinion you lose the aesthetic of no branding and slim bezels throughout the whole bezel. The ergo display does have the LG branding on the front and a thicker chin. 2) I would recommend comparing panels spec for spec. Looks like this 32UL950-W does have a higher peak brightness which is helpful, and the local dimming zones. Although I'd compare these on the spec page of each product LG provides. Both great for DTP work in portrait mode, although I'd say the UN880-B is probably easier to manage with the ergo stand if you are constantly changing orientations. 3) I fly a DJI Mini 2 and DJI Mavic Pro 2. The DJI mini 2 does look very compressed on the displays, or really any display when viewing in full screen due to the lower bit rate. But The Mavic 2 Pro looks fantastic on it (given the bigger sensor and hence large pixels at 4K. Studio Display obviously has the benefit at 5K where you can put 4K content in your timeline natively, and have the UI elements around the side in Davinci Resolve or FCPX Hope you find a monitor that is best for your needs!
@PureGlide2 жыл бұрын
The primary reason to buy the Apple display is the 5K resolution, so you get the proper scaled 2x resolution. What is MacOSX like a 1x on a 32" 4k display vs 2x retina on a 27" 5k display? Do you run at a scaled resolution, like a savage?!

Hi Joe, they are the Kanto YU4 speakers.

I can save $300 and gain a few inches of screen over the Studio Display, but then I have to add external speakers and a web cam for all those WFH video calls.
@DesignedbyKirk2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I prefer this ultimately. You can pick up a good camera for less than $90 if you wanted, and if you love music and good quality audio monitor. Bookshelf speakers will always be better than in built monitor speakers. Despite the Studio Display having really good speakers (for a monitor). Plus, given current reviews, the Studio Displays seems to lack some decent picture quality for now. 32" is a dream in the end for me, I love this setup compared to 2 x 27" Monitors. More focused productivity.
@goobfilmcast42392 жыл бұрын
And the build quality between the two are light years apart. 10 years from now, you'll still have some productive way to use the Mac Studio Display but the LG will have been taking up space in some landfill for years already.

@@goobfilmcast4239 If history does repeat, a lot of those old Apple Cinema Displays end up dying out within 5+ years, display panels just don’t turn on. Hopefully these are better, but, build quality I guess doesn’t always mean long lasting if the electronics to go the extra mile

I picked up the studio display and returned it like the next day after putting it side by side with my 14' MacBook lol the display is actual utter garbage for the price point, anyone who buys it and doesn't have disposable income is genuinely a sucker. for now im going to return the 14' MacBook and get a 16', get a laptop stand and use that as my main display for a while until monitors become a better deal and have mini-LED/OLED with 120HZ+. and the 16' doesn't feel that much smaller than a monitor
@DesignedbyKirk2 жыл бұрын
That's really fascinating, we are really spoiled with the Displays on the new MacBooks. I considered the new Studio Display because I thought I'd get continuity with display quality on it, compared to my MacBook, but it wasn't the case. Great idea getting the bigger 16" display it's gorgeous! Other monitors (that are a tad more expensive than the Studio display) that have Mini LED or OLED are: The Asus ProArt PA32UCX-P or the 32'' LG UltraFine OLED Pro But neither have 120hz. I hope you find something that works for you soon, thanks for watching!

@@DesignedbyKirk yeah great point, i considered the new dell qd-oled ultrawide but it’s a 1440p panel which again compared to the macbook displays retina resolution just looks bad in comparison monitor market is just unfortunate right now, to get something that even comes close to the macbooks you have to spend thousands which is just ridiculous imo
@DesignedbyKirk2 жыл бұрын
Definitely, not sure anything will come close any time soon. The only thing that I think actually competes (and a good price too), is the upcoming Eve Spectrum, 144hz, 4K 27" GLOSSY Display. Everything on paper there, seems like a dream, and it's $900! Might be a decent option, but obviously, no OLED. But the glossy panel would be awesome, and the price, also great.

Bro I'm amazed at this comment section🤣🤣🤣 People are actually falling right into Apple's trap of the practically 'meaningless-spec-combination'. A luxuriously built 5k 600nits 27 inch monitor with good speakers, Web cam and Siri functionality. Wow how can someone live without these features!! Here Apple take my 1600USD!! They would rather have this over literally so many other 4k 27inch or 32inch with Full Array Local Dimming, high peak brightness and much superior contrast! Ohhh no no no! 4k? That's peasant 🤣 5k is where it's at.. oohh look at the PPI! Yumm Yumm! They never realise the viewing distance matters. They never realise that the top TVs in the world are all 4k at 55 inches. They would I guess never buy them for the PPI.

@@DesignedbyKirk yeah I understand. I bought some top of the line 32" 4k displays but since I do UI design work, 132dpi at 100% scaling is too small. For normal graphic design work, 32" 4k is nearly perfect since graphic design work doesn't require pixel perfect.

@@DesignedbyKirk I have a Studio Display as my primary display, with a 4K 27" LG display next to it. Whenever I'm multi-tasking and have to switch my gaze between the two displays, I immediately notice the difference in sharpness and brightness. You're advertising a 4K 32" display, which is even less sharp. I started looking into the Studio Display because I got used to the panel of my 16" MBP. I wanted the same quality (i.e., color accuracy, sharpness, and brightness). Most people I know are looking at the Studio Display for the same reason. The display you're advertising, therefore, doesn't solve that problem.

@@ThomasVanhelden Will not be the same as a Macbook pro display, the Macbook pro display has 250ppi vs 219ppi, the macbook pro display has mini LED vs standard IPS, the Macbook pro has ProMotion with a refresh rate up to 120Hz vs 60Hz. It's a big difference.
@ThomasVanhelden11 ай бұрын
@@eminjungle Yeah, the MacBook Pro's display is probably better for most people. I have an M2 MacBook Pro 16", and I don't know which one I prefer. I really like bright displays. I always rock every display on max brightness, all the time, so I really like the additional brightness of the Studio Display over the MacBook Pro. That said, you notice the refresh rate, which is a bummer.

Sure can compare it, I’m looking at the panel all day and not feeling the aluminium.
