We had a system going in B school where former students would provide us the case studies for certain courses so we wouldn't have to buy them or one person would buy the case study pack and have the class chip in a dollar or two and share it. That system saved us hundreds of dollars a piece!

I get that if you add in all the extras like WiFi, snacks, seat selection, baggage, etc then budget airlines end up costing more, but the reality is that most people going budget just forgo those things. If I'm flying budget, I'm prepared to just go without those small luxuries, and for someone who only ever flies a few times a year, that saves way more money than the points would make back.

I second this. Especially if you only fly occasionally. If I don‘t fly for business purposes, I can survive 2 hours without wifi, and why would I need to choose a seat for a 2-3 hour flight when I fly alone. Not everyone is flying longhaul a few times a year, where this advice would make sense.

If you don't have one airline you fly all the time, look into travel credit cards instead of loyalty programs. They do typically require a higher credit score, but if you can swing it and fly multiple airlines they're often a better deal then the airline ones.

The advice regarding cars is generally true. The pandemic has negatively affected car buying for consumers. With the new car shortage (donut media recently covered this topic pretty well on Wheelhouse) the price of used cars have gone up because they’re in higher demand than usual. If you can I would recommend waiting to purchase a car, KZbin is a great resource on how to repair your car and how to not get ripped off by dishonest repair shops.

@Leshenn3 жыл бұрын
I also want to point out that there are many dermatologists who have KZbin channels, and their content is pretty damn informative and give cheap recommendations. Dr Dray is a popular one, but there are many more. My skincare routine has halved in price, I now know which products I need and don't need for my personal skin, and my skin has never looked so good. As an added note, part of why I advocate for this is because I saw expensive dermatologists throughout my teenage years, and they never really took the time to address multiple issues or give longer education on what to look for/how different chemicals worked. You may have to watch multiple videos and spend more time sifting through valuable versus irrelevant content, but it is well worth it.

Super agree with you comment, I went to several doctors in my early twenties trying to look for sustainable treatment for my acne (sustainable in the sense that I knew i couldn’t be on antibiotics long term and that’s what several suggested, like whaaaaaat) and what ended up curing my acne? I watched an Annie Jaffrey video on how she cured her acne with supplements and products and voilá, cured acne. I have a high regard for dermatologists for my eccema and other skin conditions but truth is that not all, not even many of them, have proper training on cosmetic dermatology and actual knowledge on how to treat skin conditions like acne without antibiotics, steroids or isotretonoin.
@DimaRakesah3 жыл бұрын
I agree. If you're someone who has struggled with persistent acne a long time you may not see a benefit from going to a dermatologist. I know many people who spent hundreds on those visits and the products suggested and never saw results. I refused to use Accutane and antibiotic ointments only worked short term, and sadly a lot of derms don't really know how to help with acne without prescribing something. Learning about how skin works and how skincare ingredients work, mostly from youtubers and books, was the path that eventually got me results. Yes, I probably spend more on skincare than the average person. But to me, the $35 or so a month on replenishing my products is worth it to finally have clear skin. It's such a confidence drain to be an adult with moderate or severe acne. To me it's absolutely worth it to spend a little more on products. Not only that, but these days there are very affordable alternatives to expensive brands, like Inky List and The Ordinary. Many Korean products are also not terribly expensive and worth the money.

The extended warranty offered on used cars is essentially useless. I work for a consumer protection attorney and the warranty companies just about never honor it. Definitely look into the warranty company and understand that most things you’d need help with probably won’t be covered.

Yeah, I was surprised when she recommended a car extended warranty. I would never purchase that. I am not here to shame people who choose to go the single use / non recyclable options because there may be many reason for that choice (budget being very high on that list), I am just saying I find it surprising that not many of your videos (except the ones about investing in good, longlasting items of clothing, albeit indirectly) are made to spread awareness of the matter, especially in this day and age. Just a note on high-speed blenders - they might be worth it for vegans or people with food intolerances. You can use them to make things like nut milks, alternative flours, and sauces (fake cheesy sauce!) that even a good food processor won't give you the right texture or have enough power to. And if you love smoothies you won't get that silky smooth feel even with a good food processor. I think it's important to know what you want to make with your appliance and hone in on what works for that - if you're not sure which foods you'd actually use it for get an affordable blender and see what you like enough to want to make it better. (And when I say affordable I mean affordable enough that you're ok accidentally destroying it when you learn that the things you want to make really do need a $200 motor)

If you pay for everything with your credit card and then pay off your card every month, you will get much bigger bonuses especially for travel. My husband carries a credit card that gives you lots of bonuses for travel like insurance and free baggage. Between the two of us, we often get free tickets or deep discounts that are better than the "sale" prices. I've had a flor rug around my bed for like 10 years and I've never had to replace a tile. I can pull them up and wash them in the sink and they come clean. We have two cats and they always seem to puke on the rung. I love that with flor have a custom rug with beautiful hand felted panels in between some of the less expensive tiles. The whole thing cost less than a washable rug big enough to fit the space, most of which would be hidden under the bed.

Where I live dermatologists don't deal with skincare, they only deal with skin diseases such as melanoma and psoriasis so that advice doesn't apply everywhere in the world. I buy a lot of Japanese and Korean skincare which works really well for my skin, but for skincare advice I watch a lot of skincare KZbinrs and have researched understanding ingredient lists myself. Although being a doctor myself, it's not that difficult so I don't see the need to see another doctor to obtain advice I already know

For some specific issues I prefer to skip dermatologists and drug stores altogether (that only seem to make my issues worse in the long run) and go the DIY route. Its not for everyone, and you have to careful, but it is another option. And when it comes to the Vitamix, as a prolific cook I'd like to respectfully disagree - I wish I never bothered with the cheaper ones as they just ended up being a waste of money. They were not as versatile or capable of achieving the same texture vs a Blendtec or Vitamix. Plus, the more expensive ones retain some of their value and can be resold. I thought I'd disagree with a lot more but was pleasantly surprised. Thanks for the reminders!

I feel on the fence about the car thing. Depends on the time of year and model, you can easily get 1% or even 0% financing on a new car with $0 down. That also comes with 3-5 years of warranty. Or just don’t fly as much? Emissions from one return flight can be as much as the average person emits in India during a year. Frequent flyers (>2 times a year) are also responsible for the vast majority of greenhouses gasses from flying, while 80% of people in the world have never even been on a plane. Reducing the amount of flights you take is one of the biggest personal decisions you can make to reduce your environmental impact.

As a person who has worked at car dealerships (not as a sales person) for almost a decade, I think the whole new vs used debate is framed very poorly by most people. If you are planning on driving the car for many years, a new car is really not a bad option. If you buy it new, and you buy an extended warranty and maintenance plan, your costs associated with that vehicle will be set in stone for 5 years, after which you might still have extended warranty coverage and hopefully no car payment. Buying CPO can be potentially the worst possible option, because many things are not covered by CPO warranties and the language of the warranties is often vague or misleading to make it harder for the customer (and even the employees) to know exactly what is covered. There is also no guarantee that a CPO inspection uncovered all potential problems with the vehicle, and even more importantly, that they were addressed properly and won’t cause you a headache in the future. If you can afford to and you have decent credit, I highly recommend buying a new car (and trying to save money through buying online, putting dealerships against each other to lower prices, or getting a discount on an extended warranty). CPO cars are often cars that are lease returns, and lease holders are notoriously bad at maintenance and upkeep on a car that they intend to get rid of, and this is even more severe on luxury brands. If you cannot afford a new car, or you have bad credit, try to find a used car that has one previous owner (best case scenario is a low mileage but old car, ideally if that previous owner was elderly because you are more likely to get a car that is well maintained and in much better condition). Used cars might seem like good deals, but they can be serious money pits with unexpected repairs. The only used cars that are even remotely safe to buy are Hondas and Toyotas simply because of their lack of expensive repairs. But please do not buy a used German car for any reason.
@becaboo-dv8dp3 жыл бұрын
I’d add Mitsubishis to that list of cars to look for used. I currently drive a 2011 Galant that my mom purchased used when I was younger. She passed it onto me when I graduated college. It has nearly 200k miles on it and is still running really well. Of course, my partner and I are also trying to maintain it well so it continues to last. We’re very on top of oil changes and will make repairs as soon as we are told they’re needed. (These are usually repairs you have to make to any car, like transmission fluid changes, brake pad replacement, etc.) Seems like it was a great investment on my mom’s part.

In the environment right now, some are waiting to buy new autos instead of buying late-model used autos. Because of the supply chain issue, prices have gone way up with used autos, causing some to put the brakes on buying any auto and simply waiting out the supply chain issue. Emerging cases about this issue suggest that late-model used autos now cost as much as, if not more, a new auto. Unreal...that's today's environment. I hear this matter discussed during financial segments of consumer news.

The one thing I slightly disagree with is going to a dermatologist instead of skincare. As a huge skincare nerd, I completely agree that cutting back on how much at-home skincare you are spending is a great way to be better with money. However, for the most part dermatologists are doctors that focus on skin health, whereas the current trends are more focused on aesthetics exclusively. This means that most people spending a lot of money on skincare would benefit more from spending a couple/few hundred on an esthetician (never covered by insurance) who can help them tackle problems faster and choose products more wisely. It will definitely be more expensive upfront but will yield better results and cost less in the long run.

@Masovung3 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything except for the part about cars. Yes, new cars depreciate faster, but when you only look at depreciation, you are assuming that degrading is at the same rate as the depreciation. Not all used cars are the same, even though certified. Imagine a person who buys a car with a plan to resell it in 2 years and a person with a plan to never resell it, I don't think the way they take care of the car, on average, would be the same.
