If YOU are travelling, you need to bump the local hour hand without losing accuracy, but if you are calling someone you need to bump the "other" hand to keep track of their zone. No one else has explained it that well so far.

This Seiko gmt is a good deal more useful for actually traveling than most all of the so-called true gmts, for the simple fact that it’s not a dual-timer; you get a 24 scale on the chapter ring, and the same on the bezel insert. Set the gmt hand to utc, and leave it there. You’re going to be referencing it if you’re using this gmt watch as a… gmt watch, and that 24 scale means you’re going to be able to correctly read utc at a glance. Use the bezel insert to set local destination time. Leave the hour hand on home time. It’s a good deal easier to simply adjust the bezel insert for a new destination time than to constantly be pulling the crown out - particularly when this one doesn’t screw down. In short, this Seiko is a triple-timer, or Zulu + 2. If you don’t actually use utc when you travel, get a ‘true’ gmt, as most of them are essentially dual-timers anyway. Being able to jump the hour hand, as opposed to the gmt hand, is a cool complication, but one who’s significance is mostly as a fidget spinner for collectors who don’t use them to a practical purpose.

It is amazing how this so often gets missed. I never understood the rotating bezel on GMTs until I saw Seiko (and Grand Seiko) usefully also put the fixed 24 hour scale in the rehaut. Otherwise you're stuck doing the mental timezone gymnastics that GMTs are meant to prevent.

This is how I use my Glycine Airman. There’s one shortcoming to this method. If you’re traveling on the other side of the world, there are times when it can be difficult to figure if home time is am or pm if it is in the 12 hour scale. It’s workable but just takes an extra mental calculation.

I picked one up last Saturday and have been going back and forth between this and my 2021 Speedmaster. I love the way the Seiko feels. From the case to the bracelet. Very comfortable, great style. I’m a sucker for GMTs and also own an SNR033. This one, despite indeed being a budget watch if compared to other GMTs or the Omega is a definite keeper. Really happy with it.

I have been waiting for Seiko to release a GMT forever. So exited. It's the NH34 in the watch mod community. I am currently building two custom GMT's as I am a pilot for work but can't afford the luxury line of GMT's yet and the lorier is ALWAYS sold out when I'm looking to buy one. I’ve had my blueberry for 7 months now and it’s the watch I wear more than any other. I love the way the bezel plays with the light. Pull push crow put me off but been swimming and not a problem at all. Although it’s usually a bigger watch than I would usually but if fits like a glove

For about that price I got a Glycine Airman. That particular model has double dome sapphire, screw crown, locking bezel, a better movement (Selita), and history (Glycine made the first GMT wrist watch).

Good review. I recently purchased a 5KX and while many reviewers would give it a lot of flack, saying it's not an SKX, it was never intended to be. When I got it I also did not want an SKX due to the many shortcomings of the watch. The attention to detail and workmanship, like in the GMT in your review, as well as many improvements makes the 5KX a much more desirable watch for me. Not ISO 200m? It really means nothing to me. I am not a SCUBA diver, and even if I decided to take up this sport, I would definitely use a modern dive computer, not that I don't trust my 5KS at 15m deep, lol! The whole "screw down" crown thing is somewhat of a myth. Yes, there are some watch models that rely on the screw down crown O-ring for the main seal, but a properly designed and applied captive stem O-ring will seal to pretty well any depts until the forces rupture the O-ring, well beyond human capabilities, lol! I am retired from a career in the field of Oceanography and have designed, fabricated and deployed many deep sea sub sea equipment. They all relied on one captive O-ring for sealing at depths of up to 2km. There are a lot of so-called "experts" simply barking up a tree on that matter. So, I digress. I simply love the beauty and real world functionality of the 5KX.

I loved this watch when I first saw it in video and pictures, but seeing the blue version in person made me love it even more. Definite pick up, especially since most SKX mods will work with this. If you're changing to a sapphire crystal you have to use the OEM gasket - just something to keep in mind.

@@albertstrohmaier4034 I think that's a great question, and it's a shame you've not gotten an answer in 6 months. I'm no expert, but I believe it has to do with how each crystal type is fitted. An acrylic is fit under constant tension, so it is able to maintain a good seal on its own. The sapphire won't flex obviously, it's a straight press fit, so the gasket is what maintains the seal. If I'm wrong, I hope someone will correct me, but that's my best estimate.

Amazing video. The watch is quite impressive. With that being said, you can get a Mido Ocean Star GMT for $1K or even a little bit less. ETA movement with 80h of power reserve, 200M WR, Sapphire crystal, Ceramic bezel, 2AR coating, and a "True" GMT complication.

I've also modded a lot of skxs in my time, so yeah I understand being burnt out on the general look of an skx and not being super excited with this release to be honest. I don't think it changes the game rather it adds to it. Cuz admittedly The general GMT functionality of the movement is stuff that we've seen many many years already in other Caller GMT from Swiss ETA and their equivalent counterparts. Still I agree that this is a pretty damn good value. For not much more, if you know where to look, and you've mentioned the brand, I think Glycine is maybe one of the best value GMTs on the market outside of this new Seiko GMT. You could take your chances on a Chinese GMT mevhanical movement, but for maybe under S200, San Martin has quite the offerings.. but, there's that homage territory which not all are down for.

There is nothing better than a MIDO Ocean Star GMT Special Edition (blue and red). Ok, it's twice this price but it gives you a lot of watch at that price. Whether you should prefer a caller or a traveler GMT function depends on how you use the GMT hand when you travel. I travel quite a bit, and I set it so the hour/minute hands are always my local time. I adjust the GMT hand to the time back home, and the 24-hour bezel to my preferred third time zone. That’s just me. When I was in the military and all our plans were referenced to Zulu or Greenwich Mean Time, a traveler would have worked better because Zulu never changes no matter where I am. Or, if I were an airline pilot. I’m retired now and was never a pilot, so the traveler GMT function has no appeal for me. Buy and wear what you like and what works for you, not what someone says you should buy out of some sense of doctrinal purity.

I was excited when this watch came out. I'm waiting for the price to stabilize a bit before I buy one. There seems to be a premium on them now. As far as other GMTs near this price range - I have had very good luck with Revue Thommen. Plenty of colors to choose from, Swiss made, run great. Usually these can be found for 699 to 900+ USD. However, they turn in sales often, which shaves some off of that.

This watch is amazing. Before this watch came out I had been staring hard at the Mido GMT. This is cheaper (auto instead of Mechanical) but your video really helps captivate what it truly looks like. I would want black so its easier to travel with but I also feel like the orange would be really cool to look at! Great video

Was liking this Seiko until I learned Miyota released a true jumping hour GMT movement, the 9075. 28.8k vph, 24 jewels, hacking and hand winding capability. Going to wait for micro brands to work with that movement rather than Seiko's.

After this recent GMT drop, ive noticed the price on the SKX jumped to like $600-$800. I know that the SKX is retired, but I just got into the hobby last year and “only” paid $300 😅. I have an 8F56-0020 from the 90's. That was a GMT with 100 mtrs water resistance, sapphire crystal and a screw down crown. It would still be a great watch if Seiko could fix it. A new battery and recalibrating is apparently not possible. $875 for the new 5 GMT in Australia. Bit too pricey for what you get.

Challenge accepted, Max. I have a Christopher Ward Sealander GMT and for USD1000 it smokes this. In fact it moves the game on from Explorer 2 in my opinion, although a "caller" GMT. SW330-2 gives mine +5 sec and 54hr PR. Good looking, well finished, comfortable, versatile, screw down 150m. Brilliant.

The SKX style is as iconic as the Submariner. I hope they make it forever. I am completely with you about the crown. It is a complete deal breaker for me. Even if it is NOT dive certified, it just seems negligent to me to make this watch, give the upgraded movement, desperately needed, but discard the screw down crown. Why Seiko. It was already there. No development costs. Just use what you have.

Since Seiko sell this movement to independant watch companies, there is an Italian microbrand, Venezianico, that also offer a GMT-watch, called Nereide. San Martin recently released a GMT watch under 500$ with even better specs. 200m WR, screw-down crown, sapphire crystal, milled clasp, fully lumed (bezel too). You'll sacrifice an original design for that. But on paper, it seems to be the better watch. I own a San Martin and it has topped every Seiko watch in my collection in terms of quality.

I have challenged myself to put away 50% of my monthly income into stock options which is quite easy since I live frugal without debt. I work as an account executive, and make over $20000. $10000 goes into dividends, and the other $10000 covers my my food plus living expenses. I am seeing improvements in my portfolio, dividends look certain, but I have to attribute this to only to guidance of a licensed fund manager who allocates funds to a plethora of assets. Bought this. Have way too many Seiko, but it really is lovely. Proportions are excellent for my 17cm wrist. I like a microbrand watch from time to time, but in my experience most lack the solidity of a Seiko like this.

I have a basic Seiko automatic watch that I have owned for several years but rarely wear these days. However, I also own a Seiko LX titanium spring drive watch, which I am very pleased with. The spring drive movement is truly remarkable. Additionally, I have an Omega Seamaster, which is another watch with an excellent movement and is the most anti-magnetic watch in my collection. Lastly, I own a Damasko DK32, which is probably one of the most comfortable watches I own due to its size and thinness. I must caution you that watch collecting can become an all-consuming hobby, but I appreciate your interest in my collection. Thank you for watching my video.
