Ha! Joobie literally settled on the cardboard piece! (づ ͡ ᗜ ͡ )づ So my parents have one of those and their cats never played with it. Even the extremely playful kitten didn't see any appeal, and she'll lose her mind over a frozen pea that's fallen to the floor. She played with it til it melted, then she started rubbing her face on it & cuddling it, then things got violent & she started to eat it. She eats everything! Idk why "Git it!" works on any animal, but she seemed encouraged and indeed ate the pea. (I know the pea was the important part of that story, lol.)

One of my cats absolutely loves milk jug rings. I won't see any for months then bam one shows up. Often in the bathtub where he loves to play with it while it's contained. Another favorite isn't just a hair tie but rather a broken hair tie. My friends cats discovered that this weekend & they love it too. If my cat sees me throw away a qtip he will go dumpster diving for it. Some times it just takes cats time to warm up to new things. They're creatures of habit & generally prefer things that have been around & smell like them. Also if they become bored of something just moving it can reignite their love of it. Or get them to like something. My friend moved a cat scratcher his cats didn't touch for nearly 2 years & now they love it. But in saying all that. One way to get them to like something is by spraying it with a catnip spray.

What I’ve learned so far is that Amazon is a terrible place to buy spheres 😅. Those rubber balls are under $5 at Walmart and a foam ball would probably be cheaper at a craft store.

Cats typically need several days to a few weeks to become accustomed to a new toy/cat scratching post. She's likely not going to just start using it, but when she gets the urge to scratch, that's when you'll figure out which one is more suitable. I think yours will win in the end for many of the reasons you listed at the beginning. Cats like the resistance.

I think you’re right about some cats like joob liking it more stationary, but there also crazy cats like mine who I’m sure would be spinning it furiously as fast as he possibly could especially if there’s catnip involved. The option to lock it is a good idea lol.

Terrain building uses a lot of corrugated cardboard as bases and frames. When you are layering like that, may I recommend wood glue. Spread, push quick. The glue will soak into both sheets and bind very quickly. It doesn't build up depth as much as hot glue. Also forms a stronger bond because it soaks through both materials.

Also when I made topo models for class we would laser cut the layers with the layer above it's outline scored in so it was easier to make sure they matched up perfectly

Like y'all said, I think it would be better if there was a locking mechanism on the spinning so that you could make it stationary for scratches. Then, once one side is scratched enough, you could unlock it and rotate to a fresh, unscratched side.

Our kitty beasties are very sensitive to smells. I am pretty sure ours that loves all forms of paper and cardboard would reject this simply based on the smell from the hot glue. I think a different adhesive would have perhaps skewed the favor to yours on Joobie's part. Also, it may not have needed any adhesive, or very little, if you compressed it on the rod more.

Dear Evan & Katelyn! Me as a guy who likes glowsticks, I had to figure out a way to have rechargable ones. I found super great ideas on the internet and I had my own toughts as well. FYI A Laser Cutter is a pretty common tool at your local makerspace or library! So if you consider that a person could bring their cardboard to a free makerspace and get those cardboard circles laser cut, then the cost is still really low!

So, fun tip for cutting a cardboard sphere for next time! Cut a bunch of squares that will reach just over the side of the sphere that you want and adhere them together nice and tight. Adding the hole for the pipe is optional but probably a good idea for the next step. Once the minecraft pancake pile is dry...put it on a lathe. Mild speed, and just start shaping the sphere. Just a thought! I don't know if you guys have a lathe, but that would have been my idea if I was making a cardboard pancake stack and turning it into a sphere!

The hardest thing about creating/shopping for a cat, is how likely it is for them to completely ignore it and instead go for the random garbage they found on the floor. One of my cats loves huts and caves to hide in and loves scratching things. I made him a little haunted house with scratching pads on it, but he refuses to acknowledge it. Instead, my other cat, who does not like to scratch and doesn’t even have front claws, has decided it is hers now 😂
