Trying to fix the OBNOXIOUS Oil Catch Can on my 2020 Silverado Trail Boss (5.3L Z71). The CATCH CAN WORKS AMAZING, just annoying as heck.
If you have the 5.3, most of the trucks (or Tahoe/Surburban) will make a loud hissing noise. We've tracked down where the noise is coming from and finally have peace of mind.
Check out the installation here: • Silverado Oil Catch Ca...

The noise you're hearing is probably coming from inside the can. It's acting as a megaphone and the noise is radiating into the hose. If you put some sort of a defuser in the can it'll dampen the noise. Try stuffing the can with a Brillo pad (steel wool).

I don't know if you have already solved this noise issue due to the age of this video, I have solved mine. I used hot water pipe insulation which comes in a couple of sizes. You can get it from a hardware, Home Depot or Lowes. Just like the original hose had a dense foam cover that reached from end to end right up to the plastic end cap. I wrapped my hose and used black duct tape to seal the slit in the insulation. The foam insulation is dense and black and looks original. Due to the high vacuum level travelling through plastic and rubber, it causes resonance which sounds like a leak. That's also why chevy added a cover over the plastic intake manifold to cut down noise. Hope this is helpful.

I installed the JTL 3.0 on my 2019 Chevy Silverado K1500 RST 5.3L, and I was able to get rid of the air noise by using Self Sealing grey foam tubing 1/2 C 3/8" the one they use for the home air conditioners. I wrapped it with High Temperature insulation tape, and I have no vacuum noise or hissing noise, just the engine.

At least I'm not the only one who thought they had a leak. I even changed the hose and fittings to find the same issue. Thanks for the sanity check! The can is great, and would buy again, but it would be nice if they mentioned this in the instructions so people like you and I don't think that there is an issue

Not trying to rub it in BUT I bought a $20 catch off Amazon and I didn't use the hose that came with it because they are super thin and a lot of reviews said buy different hose and went to the local auto parts store and got either transmission or fuel hose can't remember but the $20 catch can and hose's I bought work great don't have the hissing sound . So for $27 for my catch can I'm feeling really good .

I had a similar issue with catch can which i did for my ride, what i did was to put a hose clamps at the fitting near the catch can. The hissing stop, as vacuum leak from there, you might want to give it a try. Hope it solve your trouble.

Had mine for a while, literally got back from Texas two days ago(I live in Ky), with a side trip to New Orleans, all in all about 3,000 miles(about 5000 total with catch can), and no hissing so far. I would suggest getting a better quality hose, or getting some carb and choke cleaner, and spraying around the hose(listening for changes in rpm, and looking for spray being sucked into anywhere that might be leaking).

I just put my JLT on a 2021 5.3. The hiss is pretty loud. I confirmed I don’t have a leak. My solution: disconnect the small side, slip rubberized armaflex over the line, cut to length and reconnect. 3/8” ID armaflex, 1/2” thick. It is hardly noticeable now.

I think what it comes down too, is since there are no leaks in the hoses ect., the noise is being made by the air flowing through inside the system itself. Diffusing the airflow much like the screen in your faucet diffuses the water flowing out, could eliminate the hiss. But why some TB owners have it, and others don’t, is a mystery. My TB it’s definitely getting one.

You can buy EPDM rubber-based elastomeric pipe insulation up to 1 5/8" diameter. With wall thicknesses of 3/8", 1/2", 3/4" and 1". It can withstand temperatures between -297° to 300°F. You could use that and if you wanted to, wrap that with the tape. If the hiss was coming from the hose, that should hide it.
@skunkedfishing7868
@skunkedfishing7868 Ай бұрын
What ended up working for me was wrapping tape snuggly around where the short side fitting connects to the rubber hose closest to the engine. I found out it was bleeding air out of this connection hence the hissing sound for me. This was also evidenced by oil puddling at the connection to the engine on the short hose.

Maybe I’m wrong but I thought the catch can is supposed to be one side at the pcv on the manifold and the other side at just under the throttle body not the valve cover. Typically there’s a clean side separator that connects both valve covers together and a separate valve off the oil cap.

I think that the hose size is a bit small on the inside thats why its hissing catch can is like starving air i think if u can get a bigger (id ) hose and neck it down to the inlet of catch can and the other end that hooks up to ur engine that might get rid of the hissing sound i think the jlt hose is a bit restrictive

I think the manufacturers of the catch-can, could make a 60 degree metal-tubing bend coming out the sides of the can. It would appear quality of construction is a major aspect to look for in a catch-can system. I do not believe the interior of the catch-can needs such a dense filter. You probably only want to catch 80% of the crud, in order to not impede air-flow. I would think those things would need a check-valve to prevent any kind of back-flow. Also one hose needs to be bigger diameter than the other. That is simple thermodynamics.

So is jlt saying the hose is fine? I put one on just now and mine makes that noise but its not coming out of the fitting at all. Also my pcv hose isnt insulated, its a semi-hard plastic. I was assuming the noise was becaude of adding the catch can. Instead of the sound just going through a hose, now it flows in from the short side, the sound is amplified by the can itself and then goes through the other side. Any other thoughts?

Inspect the inside of the hose. I’m sure there are striations that are creating whistling. Perhaps change hoses…some oem with the same connector and just cut to length

I have the 2019 Classic 5.3L and I put an el-cheapo eBay catch can on it, never ran into that hissing. I did run into it leaking a bit onto my steering column, that is still a ongoing issue

Aloha Lonestar! I think you might still have something going on. Just installed mine today and no hissing noise to be found! Great video as always though! Keep them coming! Just a thought...a small pin leak in the hose on the catch can!?

I have the Elite catch can on my 2018 6.2 and have it mounted on the left front rad support. My hoses are pretty long and I have a very, very faint hiss. The kit uses Continental fuel/emission hose 50 PSI WP. That may have something to do with it.

If you had a vacuum leak that noticable it would cause a rough idle and other performance issues. It would likely cause the engine to throw MISFIRE CODE OR THE LIKE.

Are the catch cans needed Bc of the AFM? Never heard of these until the updated 5.3 engines with the AFM.

@@JWolf24 I know... I was going to buy a new chevy truck but i'm scare. Might be going with Ford, because there are lots of complaint about this lifter fail on newer chevy truck.

@@mrhighway honestly I’ve always been a Ford guy but now I don’t really trust either companies right now. The new f150s also started using cylinder deactivation on the 5.0 v8 so who knows if it will hold up anymore like it used to or have similar problems as GM. Also the new f150s all have rust problems as well as a recall for there driveshafts. Hopefully they both can get there acts together soon.
