Not everyone can afford to pay $600+ on a kayak. Some of us can only afford a $300 one.

^600? Try $1200 for a proper 12' fishing kayak. That's more than I paid for either of my cars so I 100% feel you.

I have a lifetime tahoma i paid $200 for and I modified it and made it my own fishing yak. Ive had it for tow years and ive ran class 2 to 2.5 rapids on it and had a blast. Ive caught numerous fish in several lakes while my buddies in their $1500 yaks are getting skunked. Ive since upgraded to a feel free moken 10v2. I understand that the quality of plastics and yes overall quality changes a lot with the more expensive ones but safety is all about common sense and wearing your life vest always!

My Pelican 100x is absolutely fine for fishing. It holds two spare rods and it's very stable. I'm 230 Lbs and 5' 10". I go out on rivers and lakes. I like the rear storage area. I carry my ruck and fish upstream a few miles, then camp the night and fish my way back in the morning. Just my .02 cents.

I also bought a Pelican argo 100x recently to get back into kayaking and I completely disagree with you. Maybe you think "this is fine" because you haven't experienced anything else, but I've kayaked in the past and IMO the Pelican is dangerously unstable. My wife has a 10ft Sun Dolphin that we bought at the same time, and even compared to that the Pelican is really bad (I actually think the Sun Dolphin is pretty stable all things considered, it just isn't fancy). My view of the Pelican is it's extremely tippy, primary stability is just total trash. Secondary stability is okay but it doesn't track great, and I really wouldn't want to push it at all. For a fishing kayak where you're moving around all the time, I'd strongly recommend upgrading to something more stable. Why risk losing all that expensive gear to a capsize because the river current caught it while you were turning? Also that's a 275lbs capacity boat so you've only got 45lbs of gear capacity before you've maxed out the boat. Upgrade man, just sell it and move on. You've committed to kayaking at this point so just do yourself a favour.

I'm 60 250 lbs. and paid $324.99 (I guess that would be considered cheap) for a Lifetime Stealth 110 with a 300 lb. float capacity from a Discount Store. I first tested it out getting into open water into boat wakes from the lake then went into a Cove to test my movement limitation on it and had zero problems. Loaded it with a Soft Pack Fish Carrier to use as an ice chest for drinks, food and fruit on the front, put a milk crate on the back to keep an anchor and rope in so that if I ever do turn over the anchor will drop out and keep the boat from drifting off, on the back deck I also have a 30L Unigear Dry bag with extra clothes, U.S.M.C improved bivy bag, sleeping bag, tarp, paracord, towel and some dry food. I keep my Lure bait box and a knife in the Hull Well and two fishing poles one in one of the back pole rod holders and the other in the front middle pole holder as I split the Paddles when fishing keeping one half in the other back pole rod holder and to Paddle with the other half. I haven't had one trip that I've felt concerned with tipping or flooding and I float big lakes and Rivers.

Your buddy is 260 lbs. No shit he shouldn’t be using a kayak that holds up to 275lbs. Mind blowing stuff here. Sams sells great budget kayaks that work perfectly for most. If you have a beer belly and weigh over 250, buy a bigger kayak.

He's got a point but you can modify a cheap kayak to your liking by adding outriggers which will stabilize you as long as you can make them not create drag. But it's possible. I have been out in the open ocean in a cheap 10 footer pelican Odyssey a mile out and it functioned great without flipping but I had stabilizer floats. You will still get wet though but that's half the fun. Whether it's cheap or expensive, you will find yourself doing mods because it's part of the hobby.

I don't go fishing. I want to get a kayak just for road trip, casually paddling around in the lake, so I believe a cheap one is enough.
@just-dl2 жыл бұрын
you are correct. though, don't go for the absolute cheapest yak out there...rather, make sure it's got a good weight capacity (how much it can carry) and a weight you can manage/lift. I've got a cheap intex inflatable, and I would NEVER ruin a good kayaking trip by going fishing!!! ;-) Seriously, my inflatable talkes up half the back seat of my honda civic. that's worth it right there. Also, spend a little more on the paddle. $100-150 paddle will be such an improvement over the one that comes with the cheaper 'yaks. So...did you get one, yet? what did you decide on, if you did?

I really enjoy it! It has a 500lb weight capacity and its pretty much perfect size for me. Don't listen to this guy. Go on some calm water, test your kayak out. If youre on flat water and not doing anything crazy, as long as its from a box store, it'll float and hold you. Go to walmart, get some pool noodles to shove into the hull to add buoyancy. buy a $5 seat cushion. buy an automotive sponge to get water out of your seat. bam youre good to go. he's talking about some intense fishing done from a kayak. if thats what youre planning, get a pontoon style boat.

Just skip all the bullshit and go straight to a Hobie compass or Outback (the Pro angler 12 and 14 are both $5k kayaks that weigh well over 130lbs). I started with a used ocean kayak trident prowler 15 and it was cool for the $300 I paid for it and I caught many many many largemouths and Smallies out of it but I couldn’t stand in it and topping it on my lifted suburban was a pain in my ass so I decided to go big, spend the $2,600 (after tax) and recently two weeks ago, bought a 2021 Hobie Compass and I’m absolutely in love (I was going to buy an Outback but after testing out both of them, out of the two I felt the compass was more stable while standing and casting for me) the pedal drive (mirage drive 180 with turbo fins) is so smooth, fast reliable and easy to use (the reverse is a great feature as well). They’re also made in the USA, have an amazing warranty on the drive and hull, the vantage seat is the most comfortable one I’ve ever sat in, it comes “Lowrance” transducer ready with a flush mount transducer mount under the kayak Berley pro makes a kit for other brands to go in the same spot, it comes with all the necessary hardware to wire the transducer and a battery all you have to do is drill two holes, run the wires, install the head unit and boom ready to go and it only weighs 68 lbs wit everything on it so I can easily stick it on my roof rack without damaging the kayak or my burban’. I’ve made it a competitive tournament kayak angling rig now and I won 2 of the 3 tournaments I’ve fished in the yak so far and placed 8th in the one this past Saturday. Here’s the mods I’ve done to it: I outfitted it with a lowrance Elite fs7 with the hdi transducer and mounted the head unit to the H rail kit I installed, Hobie H crate with cover and 4 H rail rod holders attached to it, plus a H rail tackle tray, a power pole micro mounted on the back in the brass inserts that Hobie made into the stern of the kayak, installed the rectangular hatch kit where the 8” circular hatch kit was, relocated the 8” hatch to the bow of the kayak in the Hobie pre marked spot, installed the Hobie deck pad kit, installed a Berley Pro keel guard, installed 2 21” H rail kits, installed two rubber mesh net pockets on both sides of the kayak one covers the fish finder wire and one 10 AH Dakota lithium battery for the fish finder and one 35AH agm battery for my Island hopper 46lb trolling motor (it installs just like the pedal drive easily removable) . I’ve got a little over $5k in the entire set up without the trolling motor and a little over $6k with it. I hope this helps anyone looking at high end pedal drive kayaks, Hobie truly does make the best in my experience and opinions. I’ll probably end up buying a pro angler 14 next year after I get a kayak trailer for two kayaks and give the compass to my fiancé, she loves bass fishing almost as much as I do lol, Tight lines and have a good one my fellow anglers and kayakers 🤙🏻.
