You are absolutely right in the "99% of the time it will be fine, until it isn't." I've been doing second hand stuff for about 3-ish years now (PC stuff specifically) and I've probably done over 250 meetups/transactions. I've done some risky stuff, like buying a $20 GTX 1650, a $70 RTX 2060 Super, and a $400 RTX 4070 (a week after launch), no testing, but they've turned out surprisingly 100% functional. That was, until last week, first someone sold me a DOA $30 B450M (blocked me after), then the day after, I tried to buy something (normally priced, ironically, a $60 i3-12100F + Stock Cooler), and I literally got robbed. Dude yoinked my cash as I was inspecting the item, basically when I had my hands completely full, he robin-hood'd my ass and made a break for it and I lost him in the city crowds. Box just contained the cooler and the clam shell was just filled with thermal paste. I guess the 1% finally decided it was my turn :(

So he lost 2k instead of selling his video card, then adding like an extra $300~ish to buy a brand new one from Canada Computers? I'd go for a brand new than a second hand especially for 4090 since they're also known to break a lot and you can get a 3 year warranty from Canada computers which is kinda important for that video card for replacement in case it fails. Honestly this is why I can never be a nerd on a budget. I'd pay the convenience tax from retailers just so this shit doesn't happen to me. Too paranoid for these things. The only thing I don't mind buying in Market Place are Transformers and maybe furniture. At least with Transformers you can literally fiddle it in front of them and see if there are any broken pieces and furniture are furniture. But there's a caveat with Transformers and is that there are KOs of those especially the Masterpieces so you nee to be really careful about it.

I feel like the highest value GPU is the most targeted for a scam (feel same about CPUs a used 14900K/7950X/9950X would have me wary).

I bought a used car from a dealer and spent 8+ hours going through the sales process only to drive off with 1 set of keys and non-functioning head lights... I was on the hook for the keys, but the dealer did have to make right on the headlights.
@RobertFixit2 ай бұрын
Having sold hundreds of used cars, the buyer always assumes that there is a 2nd key. It would be nice to have, but it is not required. But definitely the car has to be safe to drive (tires, headlights, etc).

I always ask to meet at a police station parking lot if its a large value item. They have cameras so if something like this occurs at least authorities can put a face to the scammer. Better safe than sorry.

I heard this was a common scam for 4090s in person. Op couldve saved up and bought a new 4090 instead. Not worth the hassle

When the economy is struggling be very careful about spending big money on private transactions, people are more desperate and will do anything to pay the bills.

Holy Hannah. You pay that much……you test the card. No work = no trade. This one is on the buyer.

The Reddit OP should absolutely post the scammers name and picture, and, if he sees this video, he should post it here as well.
@nerdonabudget2 ай бұрын
@@everettclunie3525 how can he post it when the profile was wiped, before he realized he got scammed? Also, likely was a fake name being used, and if it's like most people I deal with on FB marketplace, their profile has no pictures of themselves at all, but instead random landscape images or animals or something

That sucks main reason I haven't jumped on any newer GPUs on marketplace

Note: If a seller has full stars but not many reviews....don't buy. Also look at how long they've had their account as a seller and how many things they have sold. If it is a low number...drink water and drive on...leave it be! And he went with the "no testing" because he was afraid of "missing out" which is a fallacy.

Sucks that people are getting scammed on these. The harvested boards (no core/memory) are being sold on ebay honestly - some repair people are buying them to replace cracked boards etc - but I guess some people are taking the opportunity to scam.

When you're buying a $1500 card, there should be no exceptions. You must test it. Most of time the transactions are good. If its a few hundred without test, it's ok. But $1500 is tough. Op should just sell the broken card to at least get some money back.
@redgaming67012 ай бұрын
That’s some advance scamming.. if I was the seller and the buyer wanted to open it up and inspect the chips I would say absolutely not due to risk of damage to the card. I would only let the person test the card physically. Since it’s 2000 cad it’s only fair.

This scammers are getting creative with these scams. I’ve seen some 4090´s without a die and vram on eBay but they were listed with those parts missing for 200$.

Scammers buy these ebay listings for $200, and scam someone else for $1500, easy profit lol

I understand the topic of this video was about encountering scammers but what would you do when you encounter a scalper in this scenario if you didn't know the price of the component in the first place?
@nerdonabudget2 ай бұрын
I'm not sure what your question is? As in, what should you do if the listing is legit, and you just don't know if you're paying too much or not? I'd use eBay as a reference for the used pricing, and negotiate price based on that

amzn.to/3SUSdVr good for 900W, good to test a 4090 with which I'll likely never buy or need to test lol, but it's capable if needed assuming the rest of the test bench is pretty low powered parts

Isnt buying a used 4090 something like the GPU equivalent of buying a used Mclaren? Why would u and since u are buying the "Best" gpu why try and be cheap buying it used. (No warranty at all) seems like a recipe for disaster but hey what do I know, I play mainly older games and still use a RX 580, pleased as punch with it still to this day. 😂😂

Whenever I purchased a used electronic I want to see it working and benchmarked, if not I just leave it's not worth the risk even if it's a small amount of money like $20. That's still $20 that you worked hard to earn; save it and go to another seller that is willing to let you test it. Also, I ask for their phone# I say I don't have Data/LTE to message them on FB marketplace so I need to contact them in someway.
