Buyer's Guide: Best Rod And Reel Combos Under $100

There are some amazing budget combos this year! 3 brands have really stepped up and created amazing options for anglers looking to spend $50 on a rod or reel. We applaud these brands for making affordable gear for both entry level bass fisherman and anglers on a budget. The past year has shown a real swing in the market. More and more brands are recognizing the influx of junior high through college anglers and are building equipment geared toward them. 3 of these brands really stand out with excellent gear for the price. Had tried one out and the ceramic inside the eyelet fell out lol....rod looked good but quality was cheap.....I would avoid this rod and spend the extra 50 toward them 100 rods .......100 range you get that extra quality and wont cry when the dumb stuff happens and stuff breaks

Honest opinion from a shimano guy: In the low budget area of spinning reel, daiwa is the way to go. Pick up a legalis 2500 and have fun.

Thanks guys I personally started fishing with lower end Abu Garcia combos, I still recommend them to beginners, and anglers on a budget. I have recently graduated to some of the mid grade Diawa combos and it was a game changer for me. Love you guys and this channel. I do have to say though, y'all snubbed Abu Garcia the Max Series. Imo and after torture testing for almost 2 years, they are as solid as any reel under 100 bucks. Not the highest gear ratio, but haven't had any issues. Countless 4 lbs, and atleast 30 that were in the 5-7 lbs range including a 7/7 last year on the silvermax. I've fished almost daily, maybe missed a total of 5 days from late Feb-Nov last year, and since late Feb this year. Mostly over 4 hours up to dusk to dawn on 4 Abu reels. 2 Silvermax, one Blackmax, and Maxwinch. All 4 have held up to everything I've thrown at them! Bank cranking 5XD Strike King 15 ft, punching, frogging, and had zero issues. I would highly recommend them!

Love throwing a spinnerbait and a chatterbait on those AIRIDX’s. Those rods surprised me more than every rod I own and it quite possibly may be the cheapest out of them all. Got it on a sale for $35 at Academy and was absolutely blown away. It’s paired up with a Shimano Citica and it’s hands down the best pair I have. Love every video you guys release and all the hard work is very much appreciated from us all especially after you guys have been through so much! Keep on keeping on!

I decided to get back into fishing this year but since I stopped as a teen I didn't have a rod to use. I picked up a Diawa Revros because it looked the best and was the best price on Sierra Trading post. I could not be happier. Bomb proof reel that I can throw in the back of the car and the rod that it came with is great. I've purchased several rods since yet I keep picking up my Revros for ned rig and drop shot all the time. Glad to see you guys make a budget friendly video for new guys or folks who can't afford super high end prices.

The glass rods were no problem - & the first things to let go of from my childhood - but I kinda feel like a 1970's landfill has something I want back now at this point in my life. Videos like this are helping me to retire more gear thats for sure! I feel a lot more able to plan out affordable rod and reel purchases to improve upon what I have in tackle. The thought of a wrong purchase at $50 is far different than what you feel at $175 so you guys pointing out quality gear at reasonable prices continues to open up more options to affordably improve - thank you. Hands down my number one hurdle outside of the cost has been putting rod/reel combos together. With all the variance between manufacturer rod actions and powers (even within their own defined models) it is hard to make a confident purchase. Then throw in another variance of actual reel size with spinning reels at say 6# line from tiny crappie to inshore trout - so many options capacity, different diameter spools even I often pass on a purchase until I have more time on the water with whatever I am now using. I often get lost between rods for finesse, swim jigs, cranks, glide baits, punching, dropshot, etc. with what are all the proper actions and lines for those techniques I have all this tackle for...... I just swim around in circles. I have just had rod confusion for a long time and it wears on ya after so much trial and error on the water instead of the garage. It has not been easy but @ Tactical Bassin University and their video courses - Im getting there!! Thanks for all the hard work editing and getting out there this time of year. FUTURE SHOW SUGGESTION: rod or reel wall hangers - stories & how the gear has changed(quality, maint, longevity, materials, finishes, etc).

I bought an ultralight and the tip broke on it first cast. It obviously had damage to it underneath the surface. Unless I hit a funky way on hook set. But those rods feel amazing. I want to get another one

Most of my hard-earned money has been invested in baitcasting gear. I tend to only carry 1 spinnimg combo, and don't sweat too much over the choice of reels. My goto for the past 4-5 years have simply been $30 Shimano Siennas. That said, the last Sienna I bought has been pretty much garbage from day 1, and don't know if I'll buy another, so glad to see you guys reccomend some other low budget spinning reels, especially in Shimano, as I tend to favor them.

I just got the 7'3 Heavy 13 Fishing Defy Black Cranking rod and I was amazed at how balanced it was and it's a nice looking rod too. It's a glass composite, so it's not a noodle at all and handles lures up to 1.5 oz.

Love my cc80 took it on a vacation to saltwater, and accidentally forgot to wash it off on the last day, and it sat for 1 month until open water, and after 1 time cleaning it, it was like new...by far my favorite reel, and I have reels that are over 200 dollars.

Just got a Sedona 4000 for salmon/large trout fishing. Feels solid and smooth and the 2019 model features Hagane gears. Is it just me or did Tim have a hard time turning the Shimano spinning reel handle. It looked like the gears were bound up? I was a fan for the past 20 to 30 years of all Shimano spinning reels. When my 20+ year old Sahara wore out and I went to replace it the salesman at Cabela’s suggested I think again about buying another and pointed out some of the changes that make the new version not as reliable. I purchased a Pflueger President instead and have been very impressed with it. Tim and Matt thanks for these video’s they are helpful. I especially like watching the high end buyers guide. This is stuff I will never be able to afford and no one I know can but it makes me dream and wish for some of it. Your comments and insights are always helpful. This year I stepped up in price point on a couple of rods and you are correct they were very different so it makes me wonder what the next level is like.

I can vouch for the aird-x, I’ve had one for 3 years now I think and it’s a great all around rod for the price. Jerks, topwater, and really anything else, I’ve done it. Bass, walleye and panfish. I agree and disagree with older rods at a lower price being quality. I think it depends on what you are fishing for bass rod I agree but for catfish rod there was a few good rods. One is the Ugly stik Tiger I have had since 1999 it's been a great rod it had several reels. I have the Okuma epixer on it now. My bass rod was an Ugly stik ul it's tuff but after use St. Croix I realized the it wasn't very sensitive. I wouldn't by these two rods now they went to cheaper eyes. It was what I could afford after high school. There is only one reel I liked around 50$ and that's the Pflueger president I had for 10 years. I do know that you are talking about bass gear. Great video it's good to know they're starting to make good budget gear.

The Ugly Stick medium heavy in baitcaster and a Spin caster Ugly stick in medium. Pound for Pound Dollar for dollar. Quantum Pulse Bait caster reel and a Diawa spin caster reel. Works for me. Cheap and one Hell of a combo! I know. I fish with them all the time. If I fish a Senko Texas rigged or a Chartreuse spinner bait double willow blades. These rod's and reel's get the job done. Bought the shimano sellus baitcasting rod on y'all's recommendation. Owned it for about three months before one of the middle guides broke off. (I take care of my rods). I bought a fuego a while back (own a tatula and a tatula SV). Granted not the same reel but it's very similar (no TWS, lower end etc). Not very impressed with it. Side by side with an Abu promax, the promax casts farther. It's like they were so worried about making the daiwa ultra "smooth" in retrieve that they sacrificed casting distance etc. now...the Abu has its faults. Namely the handles come loose and the spring slip washer thingy right under the handle fell out on one of them (I have two).

Wish handle options were solid instead of the exposed blank. Solid handles work much better in the rod holder of my tackle bag when I pound banks. For what it’s worth, I use a lot of BPS Graphite series spinning rods for roughly $39. Love ‘em, even the 3’ casting version with a Zebco 33 mini for my kid. Have another 3’ spinning with a Pflueger 20 reel.

I think that’ll be a perfect set up depending on what size spool you going for. Rigid yet pretty smooth too as long as you run braid

I am glad you guys included the Revros. In this. It is a gem at the $50 mark. I have had reels in the $70 to $120 range that are not as good as this reel is. I recommend it to all my friends that can't afford or justify buying higher end gear. It is solid and a hell-of-a deal at $50.

@@oliverb5947 Sorry Oliver I can't. I would recommend the Dobyns Colt series at $80 each retail if you could swing that. But I don't have much love for any lower priced rods. I do love my Okuma Cello Ultra lite that I use for pan fish. But it is over 10 years old and I am not sure if the current models are the same quality. Maybe someone else can help turn you on to a cheaper Gem rod. Fish On

Revo X, Lews' LPS is the smoothest baitcasters i ever used for the $, Revo is no joke, SLX was busted before i ever got to fish with it, if you have to pull a cover to adjust the brakes just put it back....

Lol The Defy was my first Swimbait Rod. 79 bucks. Short butt section, but was great in a kayak. Was great for Hudds, Real Preys and all jig hooked swimbaits!

You can even go cheaper lews Ameican hero combo (blue and Gray) 54-79 bucks and still slay bass and it last . Or buy rods with lifetime warranties if they break you get free replacement. This is a great video probaly use Abu Garcia Pro Max on them rods imo
