Excellent advice, I have come to really respect your views over the last few months. My son will be buying his first house in the next year so I thought I would research a quality budget system for him as a possible present. He comes over at the weekend at the moment to play his vinyl collection on my system which is great for us both as we have quality time together. He is also educating me with more modern music such as Bring me the Horizon and the Architects. I play him Mike Oldfield and Neil Diamond. Thanks for a great video.

I can't believe I just found this after spending a month or more researching turntables. I recently got a box of 200 records back from my childhood home. I already had a Rotel amp in the loft and bought a Rega Planar 1 and Q Acoustics 3020.. I wish I'd have found this video first, would have saved me hours of research. Amazing system for the money. I paid £99 for the speakers and £189 for a B stock Rega. Couldn't be happier with the sound at less than £300.

I just bought this exact system based on your video and supporting reviews and I'm enjoying it very much. Thank you! I'd only add 2 things: 1.These speakers (like all bookshelf speakers) don't have bass, so I'd recommend adding a subwoofer like the matching Q Acoustics 7060s for $320.US (this probably would offend a lot of audiophiles) 2.The built-in phono preamp seems a bit inadequate. I immediately ordered a Schitt (high-quality American budget brand) Mani phono preamp for US$130US. I also acquired the matching Cambridge Topaz CD10 cd player w/built-in DAC. Neither the Topaz AM10 nor matching CD10 are actually made any longer by Cambridge, but I found good used examples. The AM10 was only $140US!!! Again, thank you for the fine recommendations and helping me get started back in the hi-fi game after 30 years off! UPDATE: The CD Player brought the bass alive in the speakers. I'm hoping the phono pre-amp will do the same for the turntable.

I always recommend that people buy the turntable separate to speakers as the ones that come with speakers, the speakers usually break within a year or two and then it’s over. And your have to buy another one. It’s so much better sound too.

Nice review Paul. You mention Chinese amps - I'm using a tiny SMSL Class D (so not hot running) power amp with my Rega P2. I'm happy with it and it's very inexpensive. Be interested on your thoughts on whether I am losing out a lot of audio quality?
@TheAudiophileMan
@TheAudiophileMan 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that Julian. There are lots (and lots) of Chinese amps out there and there are also some intriguing designs (although the examples I've heard are rather higher up the price scale). This one I haven't heard, I'm afraid so it's tough to properly advise you. That said, the clue to the solution is in your question. You say that you're happy with it and that's the key point. If you're happy with your set up then you're sorted, basically :) Don't let the likes of me cast germs of doubt in your head. The idea is to enjoy your music. If and when you feel the need to upgrade, give me a shout (and a budget) and we can talk :)

Sir, you are a very helpful person for someone like me; just starting on the Hi-Fi world. There is something, or many actually, that I still don’t understand and that’s the relation between the Amp and the Speakers; what’s the rule I should follow? The Impedance value from both? Actual power input? Both? I love your guides, I’m learning a lot!

Okay, a wonderful lecture; and a very informative, revealing review. Myself, if it be a new turntable belt drive it is the Rega Planar 2. On the Planar 2 it is possible to upgrade that tonearm - which is very good anyhow - with the Michell brand RB250 Tonearm; that also has an adjustment for anti-skate, an anti-skating mechanism. What you call a bias adjustment in the UK, by the way.🔉🎵🎶

Two of those albums I love, Joni James and Nancy Wilson. I wish I knew you from the beginning Paul. But I think the rough and confusing journey of a musician who is just starting the Audiophile maze is nonetheless worthwhile and full of serendipitous moments. My set up altogether is probably worth 5k US. Focal 716, Technics mk7 with Nagaoka MM cartridge, Musical Fidelity ms2i, Schiit Mani, SMSL m8a Dac ( beautiful name😂), laptop to stream- Audirvana. Upgrading at this point would be borderline avarice😁. I simply don't like that feeling of a satisfying sound with "wanting more than what I have". Are you done with upgrading in your life Paul? This is Gustavo (from the group)

I got it! After a hiccup with a bashed delivery I am the proud owner of a Rega Planar 1, a second hand AM10 and a pair of refurbed 3020is. So firstly, thanks again - oh god, it sounds bloody marvellous! A massive step up from my old mini hifi and lp60. Thank you so much for the advice (I wrote on your blog before) - Just had a couple last questions. 1 - Do you recommend any specific QED cable? I only need about a metre or so for each speaker with my current setup (small room, currently using generic speaker wire) but I'm seeing QED classic 42 strand, classic 79 strand, silver anniversary xt, performance micro slimline and reference XT40i. The anniversary XT seems a bit more impression going off the features and the look, but the XT40i seems to be a bit pricier, and based on what you recommend in your video is maybe what I want to look at? 2. From reading the Rega Planar 1 online manual, it recommends leaving it running for the whole session and only turning it off at the end. It seems this means leaving it running when you flip records. It has a felt mat, but this TERRIFIES me. I feel like if I hesitate even slightly I'm going to do lasting damage to the motor, and possibly scratch records. With the spindle and the mat being black I also find it hard to see to get it back on at the best of times! Do you think it's going to seriously reduce the life of my turntable if I turn it off when flipping? 3. Is there any way to use banana plugs with this setup? It looks like the 3020is might take them, but the binding posts in the back of the AM10 seem to have a solid centre to them. Am I missing something, or is it maybe possible to get alternative replacement generic binding posts with a hole for the plugs?
@TheAudiophileMan
@TheAudiophileMan 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul - 1: grab the most expensive QEDs you can buy - price follows performance on these. 2: Many turntable manufacturers say this because starting/stopping stretches the belt. Hence, this advice increases belt life. Try rotating the vinyl anti-clockwise as you remove it, this will help (a bit) to keep the mat on the platter. No damage will be done to the motor. 3: as you can see in the images within the review, there are holes in the centre of the posts. You may have covers on them. Try levering them off with a flat headed screwdriver.
@pauldevine8090
@pauldevine8090 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheAudiophileMan Ok, thanks yet again. If it all comes down to belt wear I think I might just stick with stop/start and replace the belt if it comes to it. It would put my mind at ease much more than what I perceive to be risking my vinyl and the belt simultaneously with every flip or swap! Ahh - I never considered that they would be covered, I'll give that a go. Cheers.

Hi Paul. Recently subscribed to the channel. Thanks for the review and information about the Rega Planar 1. For those of us in the US, you mentioned the Project Debut as starting point turntable. Have you had a chance to look at the U-Turn Audio Orbit turntable? Hi Paul! Love your channel! Looking to get back into vinyl and wondering what you would recommend on the below 3 tables- Looking at 3 Audio Technica’s - AT-LP3 (would probably upgrade to 95 cart) AT-LP120 AT-LPW40WN (worth the extra money?) Need phono amp, will be using existing powered studio monitors. Music listening is primarily Prog Rock and Metal and primarily new vinyl releases. The LP60 may be fine for my needs but I can’t upgrade it down the road so seems like a waste of cash. Appreciate any feedback you or the channel could recommend. Thanks! Chris

There seem to be a lot of people - audio pundits- on KZbin and elsewhere who suggest spending 50% of the budget on speakers, next priority is the amp, with the source getting much less consideration. I’ve always subscribed to the source first philosophy. Ultimately I suppose it doesn’t matter that much - it just dictates what you upgrade first. But a highly resolving amp and speakers are going to show up a deficient source straight away. Garbage in, garbage out.

Yes. Basically. If that's possible. If you go to all of the trouble of buying a separate phono amp and integrated amp, then do yourself a favour and buy a pair of passive speakers to make the most of it and use the Kantos for a second system. Stream music to them via your phone, for example in a spare room or the kitchen, etc. You can pick up a pair of passive Q Acoustic 3020s - the original models, not the 'i' I talk about elsewhere for around £130 (depends where you shop).

@icedearth1971 Hi icedearth1971 - ok, thanks for that. Firstly, I would advise removing the equaliser from your system. It will hurt sound quality. It's one more noisy box for the signal to pass though. Losing that will help on its own. Next? I would grab a Rega Planar 1 and, if available, a Cambridge Topaz AM10 integrated amp. The external Rega Fono phono amplifier is better than the built-in model. Floorstanding speakers will provide more bass but you don't have the budget for good quality floor standers so I'd look at the Q Acoustic 3020i speakers (theaudiophileman.com/3020i-q-acoustics-speakers-review/). Then check out Amazon and buy the best QED interconnects and speaker cable you can afford, speaker stands from Atacama (the best you can afford) and, if there's any money left - a decent shelving system (or maybe an upgrade later). Again, Atacama provide value for money here: www.atacama-audio.co.uk/c/hifi-racks

very interesting video, I follow you even if with difficulty because of the language I intend to buy a turntable for my stereo system, composed for the moment of a Denon pma 600ne amplifier and two Elac debut 2.0 b6.2 speakers. Until now I have listened to streaming music with an ipod touch via bt connection, but considering the many lps still lying in the library, I decided to take this step. Budget max euro 500, the ones I am considering are: Denon dp300, Dual dt400 or Rega Planar 2. I also was thinking to ad a Schiit loki equalizer to the system and would like your opinion. I appeal to your advice to broaden the choice and quality of course. I won't buy any turntable before reading your reply. Thanks

Hi Charlie - that depends on you. If sound quality is the *only* priority then the Rega wins hands down. It walks all over the 120 on that one element. If, on the other hand, you want the Techno 'cool' look, you need a built in phono amp because of budget or footprint concerns and you need to rip vinyl to a digital file then the 120 is the solution, the Rega has none of those things.

I'm pretty sure I saw these at a hifi show a few couple of years back - unless I'm getting mixed up in my head - stood in the empty company room for a few minutes waiting to speak to someone and then left when no-one appeared. I was going to ask for review samples but it never happened in the end. That's as close as I got, I'm afraid. I don't believe that you can make a direct comparison with the 3020 speakers because the latter are passive and the HD3s are powered. Hence, it's a bit chalk and cheese. For my general thoughts? Hi Paul, thanks for such a good insight into the basic considerations for a budget system and your recommendations. My question: As well as playing vinyl, I would also like to have ability to stream music from Spotify/Amazon through the system - as I understand it, the amplifier would need a 3.5mm input to allow (at the very least) something like a Google Chromecast Audio to be hooked up. The AM10 doesn't look to have this input, so is there another make/model you would recommend at a similar price point? Thanks in anticipation!

It seems your arithmetic is a hell of a lot worse than mine, you start off by saying this is a budget hi fi system from the lower end of your budget scale, you classify your budget scale starts from £250 pounds to the high end of the budget one being around £1000, so I was expecting the cost for what you going to recommend to be between £250 up to about £400, after which the system would then start to enter a mid range one, costing between £400 to £700, anything more than that would be in the high end budget range. the units you recommend according to my calculations add up to about £750 putting it firmly in the high end budget system, I'm not saying that the system is not a good one, in fact far from it, but your costing is far from what you said it would be, so what would your rock bottom end system be, a record player.

Ah yes but if you buy a turntable that doesn't have a strobe light and pitch adjust, how are you going to know it is spinning at approximately the right speed, and mess about with the pitch of the music? Also your amplifier has no tone control. Hello? How are you suppose to ramp up the bass and boost the treble without tone controls? And any way you need a direct drive turntable because those very nice people in Japan say direct drive is better, more muscular, and also enable you to pretend to be a DJ. Who wouldn't want that?

Totally disagree with your budget system . I bought the Rega Planar 2. It has cheap plastic hinges, cheap freebie style fixed phono leads and the cartridge came totally misaligned. The arm was very difficult to balance due to the built in anti skate mechanism. In short it is a piece of junk & I would’ve recommend it to anyone. Q Acoustics bookshelf speakers sound very bright with poor bass response. Cambridge Audio products are again far too bright and would emphasise the over bright speakers. The Pro-Ject Debut range of turntables are far in front of anything Rega has to offer at this price point.

The Audiophile Man I referred to the practice of a large part of the audio press who is acting as a sales adjunct and constantly ignoring possible standarized tests (blinding, spl leveling). That's mostly beyond the scope of a consumer position.

@Christian Goergen aka AstraOovier Hmmm, I've used all the systems, reviewed under the shadow of many measuring hardware technologies, etc, etc and the one thing I have learnt is that none of these are perfect. Everything can be leaned on, skewed, and manipulated (I'm naming no names or pointing fingers - because I still have to work in this industry). This is why I have decided to adopt the review system I use. I'm sure that not all reviewers would agree with me but my system works for me. And that's the point. My advice would be - ignore systems and technologies re. reviews. Instead, trust people. This means you need to work a bit to get to know different media outlets and individual critics but, once you find someone you can trust, that will be be a big help. Even then, don't rely on one magazine, site or critic. Do your own research, read, listen via dealer and more. We all need to take more responsibility for our purchases and not depend on one outlet or one measuring system to do that for us. Please see my How To Buy HiFi video on this very subject.
