Hi Paul, The artwork technique used on the Slave to the Rhythm album was also used on another album called Sleep It Off by Cristina in 1984. I've been reaquainting myself with some Ze Records material, including Cristina, Was (Not Was), Material, and others. Sadly, Cristina passed away on 01/04/2020 due to Covid-19 aged 61. I have the 1981 Christmas album, and her song Things Fall Apart backed by Was (Not Was) is sublime. The album also contains The Waitresses' song Christmas Wrapping. Unfortunately, the singer for that group passed away at a young age. The album also features songs by Suicide and Alan Vega.

And a Stiv Bators solo LP on Munster Records (Spain), which has an amazing catalogue - mostly on vinyl - of great releases from bands from all around the globe... Always like spotting what albums you have on show on the shelves behind you. Great, eclectic taste on show. Always enjoy your Hi-Fi News YT channel, too, for your impartial equipment updates, & the occasional, objective equipment reviews, too. All the very best! I don't clean filthy but absolutely priceless records (that might justify expensive cleaning solutions), to be honest; but for the normal, everyday yard-sale-pick cleaning, I use a mix of approx. 15% pure medical grade ethanol, 85% deionized water and a tiny little drop of commercial grade (the stuff without "hand softener" and fragrance) dishwashing liquid. I use a medium soft toothbrush for stubborn specks and after that I rinse with distilled water. Works perfect for me since decades. When hobby photo developing was still a thing, I used "Tetanal" wetting agent; but commercial grade dish detergent seems to be ECACTLY the same thing.

I often browse a shop that only sells second hand Japanese pressed vinyl. The owner once told me his formula that he uses and has used for years to clean records. He uses a 4% IPA, 2% white distilled vinegar, a couple of drops dish washing liquid (surfactant). He makes 1000mL at a time with distilled water. Sprays on a bit on the record and rubs it round with a microfibre cloth. He dries off the record with a separate clean, dry microfibre cloth. He says he has never had a problem. I don’t know why he adds vinegar as it is also an acid at about 5 to 7%. I will ask him why he uses white vinegar in addition to IPA.

Curious... I don't need one 'cause I have 3... Well actually 4 if you count the 1968 console stereo I put on my boat LOL I am seeing things like USB and/or Bluetooth on several of the TTs in your list so I am guessing all of these have a built in phono preamp? I assume the digital outputs would be useless without the RRIA decoding? This is something I find hard to reconcile with the costs since a mediocre phono preamp alone costs the same as most of these... I have listened through really cheap phono preamps and they really sound either harsh or muddy... I love the Fluance tables and my main table is an RT-85 but I swapped the cart to OM2 black and play through a tube preamp so it's essentially 3x the price of the RT-85 by the time I get line level output) That said... except for the ones with digital outputs I would concur with many of your picks for a starter piece.

I just tested the Monitor Audio bronze 50, for a budget set up in the spare room downstairs. I already have the much more expensive floor- standing silver Monitor Audio which is amazing. Hence I approached the bronze 50 as a ‘toy’ . How wrong I was! I tested it with Brahms’ first piano concerto - on vinyl- ( Arau and Guilini) first movement. The orchestra came across with all its might and multilayered sophistication. Other brands with current models (2024) struggled with orchestral multi- layering / differentiation of instruments - with a confused muddy rendition - obviously they could not cope with Classical music. When the piano started on Monitor Audio, oh the sheer joy! The sparkle, the exuberance, were absolutely magnificent. I tried Maria Callas singing Casta Diva ( vinyl 1960 stereo). Monitor Audio again differentiated the soprano, the chorus and the orchestra with sensitivity unmatched by the muddy renditions of the other brands ( 2024 issues). Superb fidelity, with a real ‘presence‘ of the singing cast. Finally Mozart’s Magic flute ( vinyl 1960s recording - Klemperer) with Papagino’s aria plus xylophone- awesome fidelity, power, sparkle. It did not take long for me to be convinced. The Bronze 50 is not a toy. If it can play Classical and Opera so well, my 60s and 70’s pop would be a breeze. Obviously we used expensive cables, but settled for a £170GB amplifier that was sufficient for my ‘ budget’ set up..

What exactly are those "released agents" ?
@TheAudiophileMan9 күн бұрын
Despite what some fans believe, vinyl doesn’t just consist of PVC but a recipe of 8-12 chemicals. PVC being just one of those. One of those chemicals is an oil-like substance that is designed to sweat out under the heat and pressure of the pressing machine to prevent the record sticking to the machine itself. Thing is, no-one removes this oil afterwards. It sits and hardens in the groove over the days, weeks, months and years. It’s not a protective, it’s a waste material. And it masks detail because your stylus plays it instead of the bare groove.
@disquesettourne-disques7 күн бұрын
@@TheAudiophileMan Yes, or so I heard in the past 40 years or so. But still, it's not clear at all what this "oil" is, exactly. It's also hard to get confirmation from the industry. For instance, I've seen many microscope images of grooves over the years, and I have yet to see anything that resembles an oily residue when and where there's plenty of dust. Never "felt" it with my fingers, never saw traces of oil on any inner sleeve (on a "fresh" record, it should go through, don't you think?) or some "gunk" picked-up by the stylus. Therefore, and as I can understand it, it should be something so intricately mixed in the groove that questions arise about whether or not we should try to remove it. Some other professionals say exactly that: no you should not. A colleague says some records sound worse after that kind of treatment. And despite all this, I do hear the difference with some brand new records passed in the Degritter. I find it confusing to say the least. On the other hand, record presses are a hot, steamy, not-so-clean place to be when you try to get an "immaculate" record. Could it be something hanging in the air? I'm planning to visit a pressing plant soon to make a video about the process, I'll be asking about that for sure.
@TheAudiophileMan7 күн бұрын
@@disquesettourne-disques This stuff is evenly leached from within the vinyl, not added as a third-party substance. It's not poured or sprayed on. So you won't feel it. It doesn't surprise me that you don't see it. Why should you? It's designed by pellet companies to do just enough. Nothing more. After all, they want to add as little as possible to the recipe, just enough to do the job. Any more is expensive to them. Some of it will be burned off, some of it will evaporate, etc. But it only takes a micro film to cover the groove walls to effect the sound. Which is why pressing plants are not burdened with the (again expensive) job of removing it. Imagine if you could feel the oil? The pressing plant would incur delays and extra staffing costs to get rid of a substance that the general public would complain about :) And if you clean a record and is sounds worse, then you haven't cleaned it properly. As for the 'it's a protective layer'? An uninformed urban myth. And where do I get my info? I've visited two pressing plants (EMI Hayes - when EMI still owned it and it was run by men in white coats - and Music on Vinyl in Holland), interviewed two UK vinyl pellet plants, interviewed the main acetate supplier to Abbey Road, a Canadian chemist contracted to Abbey Road and interviewed the manager of the current owner of EMI Hayes (now The Vinyl Factory; when EMI went bust), plus CEOs of specialist vinyl companies and mastering engineers since 2000. Plus around 10 years of constant and intense A-B, C-D, etc, etc tests. As a HiFi reviewer I am lucky to have access to most, if not all, cleaning tech and liquids. I try to test most if not all. Hope that helps a bit.
@disquesettourne-disques7 күн бұрын
@@TheAudiophileMan I don't mean in any way that a "protective coat" is "sprayed on" or anything like that, and I know about those "additives", just to be clear. My concern is, as far as I can wrap my head around that, more about a residue that seem to be so intricately mixed and hardened with the surface of the groove that it might become undistinguishable from it. Therefore, I can easily imagine that one might remove too much of it and alter the surface. The Degritter doesn't do that, but some other ultrasonic devices seem to do (I won't name names). How much is enough, or too much? You say you spin the records for 6 runs, but who does that? How far do we have to push the envelope? I mean, the Degritter is powerful enough to go through aluminum foil in one single run, so what about it? Sorry, I'm not trying to challenge you, those are only legitimate questions. I work with mastering engineers too, and I can't wait for that pressing plant tour I'm working on!
@TheAudiophileMan7 күн бұрын
@@disquesettourne-disques Well, it sounds like the pressing plant visit may provide you with more answers, because you can see all before you. As for the rest? I found the '6' figure by listening. Simple as that. Others might not need such extremes, of course. I have never heard any damage from an ultrasonic. Even home made types. And foil isn't PVC. But look, enjoy your visit get what you can out of it and I;m sure it'll all be good . Let me know how you get on. Good luck.

Pedantic comment: the phono preamp actually does more than just amplify the signal from the cartrige. It corrects the RIAA equalization which is designed to increase recording time and improve sound quality. The RIAA standard lowers bass and boosts treble since low frequencies cut larger grooves than high frequencies, which is an attempt to make the grooves more consistent, regardless of what was recorded. Without RIAA compensation in the phono preamp, the music would sound very thin and tinny.

I have no such issues after around 30 mins to set up correctly using my own digital scales and test record tracking and ant-skate perfect. My opinion is the build quality is very good and a bonus assembled and designed in the UK 🙂 after a quick test found no ambient noise or hum despite no grounding probably due to the 5v supply. Overall I would recommend the turntable and for £399 excellent value. As for the Passive/Preamp switch issue? to me its fine why would you want to keep changing it very rarely used, i am not using the internal amp however may try it later to see the difference. I am off to listen to a variety of records and enjoy.
